Japan's three main monetary authorities held an emergency meeting on March 27, 2024, to discuss market intervention options after the yen fell to a 34-year low against the US dollar. The drop was the yen's lowest since the middle of 1990, when Japan's asset bubble burst followed by decades of economic stagnation.

A weak yen will hurt Japanese investment leaving Japan and imports coming into Japan will be more expensive, especially oil and energy.
But a weak yen will make foreign investments, tourism, and exports from Japan more competitive to foreign businesses and customers.
    A double edge sword.
China has benefited but also suffered from a weak yuan for decades making their exports more competitive to the world.

The Plaza Accord was designed to help Japan's export sector by devaluing the yen relative to other major currencies. The decision to devalue the yen was based on economic factors including a slowdown in growth, rising inflation and high public debt levels. It was hoped that this would encourage foreign investment into Japan, which would help revitalize its economy.
    The Plaza Accord backfired~

Doubtful.Japan is not in developing phase any more. Domestic purchase is very important with super low yen like this. Plaza Accord wasn't to help devalue the yen. It was the opposite. It was to help devalue the USD in relation to the yen in order to make American exports 'cheaper'.

    • @Cosmo1093
      @Cosmo1093 개월 전 +1

That's literally the opposite of what the Plaza Accord did. The yen was already weak -- artificially "devalued" against the dollar -- to maximize Japanese exports, just like what China is doing today by keeping the yuan weak to maximize Chines exports. The Plaza Accord sought to strengthen the yen to more realistic values, but that caused an asset bubble.

The problem about comparing yen to the dollar is that the dollar has decreased in value significantly as well. $100 US dollars in 1994 is worth $214 dollars in 2024. 114% decrease in value. This means the yen is also worth less than half of what it did in the mid 90’s.

The biggest issue is they are too reliant on USD. Most businesses, export, imports, etc are done in Yen and USD, but they hold so much USD.
There is very little need for Yen except for its population. However, the population is declining and birth rate is low so there isn't enough people to use and need Yen.
This will continue to be a problem unless there is more value and use for Yen.
On top of this, U.S prints so much money which causes global inflation. If any country prints as much money as U.S, their economy would collapse like Venezuela.
However, USD is unique since it is considered the global currency so U.S can export the inflation to other countries globally. The more countries and business that buys USD, the less U.S will see the impact of inflation.
Even exporting inflation globally, U.S is still experiencing hyper inflation so you can see how much money they print.
Now with Japan, holding so much U.S debt and using USD so much. The only way to not let the money the lent to U.S become worthless is to buy more USD to offset U.S inflation.
This essentially reduces U.S inflation and increases Japan's inflation in which they have don't have much other choices.

Changes to the economy are mainly made in the physical world. Playing around with numbers won't change that.
So the solution to this is also in the physical economy and they will have to find ways to add more physical value to the economy and do so in a constructive and planned manner instead of tweaking the numbers in the hope to make it easier for investors to squeeze even more wealth out of your economy and then not re-invest that inside the country. If that happens you will see a boost in the short time but a major decline in the medium to long term.

as indian i feel this is highly true. i love japanis and we indians are smart and hardworker. india is 3rd largest economy in the world and google ceo is indian. japan governent needs to fund us and bring indian migrants to japan and also give social safety net because it is not garuanteed success in japan or give indian governent stable jobs.

Like value of national currency, value of coorperate currency will fall when people depend on its value and there is no enough fueling (by investing into it). The same wealth gap arises and more and more people will leave and devalue said currency. Quick head-up for how the situation will evolve: "The Limits To Growth 1972 by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)" Look it up. Spread the word. Eat the rich sustainably.
