  • A first look at some Age of Empires 4 gameplay during the "stress test" open beta. To ease into things I went with a 1v1 as English against the Holy Roman Empire in black forest.

Looks like it's more of a sequel to AOE2 than AOE3 was. My only complaint is that the town center bell is too quiet. It could probably use at least 4x as many DING's, or maybe even just never stop ringing, and getting increasingly louder throughout the match.

And yeah, when your base gets attacked there'll be an alarm bell, but the English have this "feature" that any defensive building can start the alert for so much as spotting an enemy sheep.

They provided a very good argument against public score. They want to put an emphasis on scouting and prevent players from guessing the enemy strategy from the score. they seem to indicate that in AoE II you can deduce if a player is clicking feudal based on his score for example. I think you should be able to display scores in custom games, but I'm ok with them removing it for matchmaking. It's off putting but people will get used to it.

Showing score is just a weird concept in general. It basically gives you information out of thin air. Many people have argued about the not so up to date visuals (especially considering the size of the game), it doesn't bother me that much if the gameplay is great, but there's tons of yellow squiggly lines everywhere, I mean, if they're helpful, idk...

-the tempo feels too quick causing game to finish too fast.
-mini map having too many markers (or the markers being too big is more of the problem)
-and the biggest one for me: the map feels so small :(
I mean. I'll play it. I do like AOE3 as well. But AOE2 just always felt bigger and more weightier to me.

They kept the QoL problems of AoE3 while not taking any of the great gameplay innovations - is the pop cap more than 200 at least?

Yeah, I really don't understand why we can't have a slightly more zoomed out and Lower (10-30) Field of View option that are more similar to the Isometric view in Age of Empires 1 and 2.
I played the beta and that's how I felt really, also units take multiple Pop Cap so the armies also feel smaller. It seemed like I was playing something in-between Age of Empires 3 and Age of Mythology with a Medieval theme.

It looks really silly how slow miners and lumberjacks swing their pickaxes/axes. It looks like they just want it to seem like they're doing hard work, while actually being really lazy. Plus for realism if that's the intent though, I guess.

So i heard from someone who played the stress test that the deer are for the 2 other civs well get on release is that true or is it just a mechanic they didnt have in the beta build?

  • @voldemortborbeli5839

Thank you for this genuine gameplay, finally something comparable! Now I also figured out what was bothering me about the graphics and it's NOT the comic style, that would be fine. The problem is the colors and textures, they look washed out. For example "blue" looks like washed out jeans, so do the market stands, and the castles have some tiles with the exact same colors as the streets around them. So a lot of buildings and units seem to blend into the background and it feels like you are constantly squinting into the direkt sunlight and never get a real picture of what's happening. THAT is the problem, not the style.

    A few things:
1- Graphics and Unit detail are simple but with 300ish units on screen, my computer didn't bog down nearly as much as it would in AOE2. They want this game to run well when the engine is under load, and it even though it's a stress test it seems like that's gonna be the case.
2- As someone who only has played AOE2 for about a year with 200 hours of play time (mostly campaigns)...I sorta like the UI and visual style. Everything is crystal clear. Some of AOE2's design felt like it was less for function and more for making the game seem they way it did in 1999.
    3. One of the most fun things to watch is someone talk their way thru a match in an RTS game.
