Other than Ernie Banks - and _nobody_ comes close to Ernie - my favorite Cubs to watch at the plate were Kingman and Andre Dawson, because they had the potential to rip the cover off the ball with every swing. They batted with the ferocity of wild animals. Of course, Kingman in the outfield was a different story. It was like having a block of concrete play left field for you, but at the plate, he was so much fun. Oh, and Billy Williams, with that smooth, beautiful swing. I wanted to marry that swing.

@@markschomaker3053 Yeah, his career batting average was in the 230's and he struck out often, as many great power hitters do, he also career averaged 37 homeruns and just over 100 RBI's/162 game season. There is nothing mediocre about that. When people went to games he played in, he stood out as a 6'6" power hitting freak. He got everyone's attention when he stepped up to the plate. However, I do know what you are saying if he is to be compared to the 5 tool superstars we see now. Kingman obviously didn't have that kind of talent.

He was an AWFUL defensive player, no matter where he was. The best you could do was minimize the damage he could do with his glove, by putting him at 1B. And he was a TERRIBLE 1Bmen. If he wasnt on a 2 week homerun tear, he would strikeout a minimum 2 times a game. The other 2 ABs he would hit into a DP, and hit skyhigh pop outs to the IF. People who fawn over Kingman never saw him play, and only look at his youtube videos. The most All or Nothing player, this side of Rob Deere or Adam Dunn.
