It’s the accumulation of the heat with each bite.
I remember when 3 of my housemates at University had phaal. I tried one spoonful and thought that it is spicy, but didn't blow my head off. But that was one spoon full. 2 hours later 1 was screaming in agony, the other didn't finish it because it just too damn hot and final one, well he's from Sri Lankan heritage so his threshold of taking the heat was a lot higher than the other two.

have you ever thought about applying to work for the food network or travel channel? they hold auditions once a year and the first step is just sending them a video portfolio of your work, you already have that with this entire channel and you have the on camera personality that people want to see. I think you can easily do it man.

I beat this challenge in NYC. The next morning as we were driving around town I MADE my friend pull over at a Wendy's so I could "relieve" myself in their bathroom. Thank god it just opened and was still clean.

Eating very hot curries like that is best with the rice, as it helps somewhat. Also, drinking something cool beforehand, like you did with the lassi is definitely a good idea. The phaal and vindaloo are staple curries here in the UK and are ordered regularly, I often order a phaal, as I love the flavour as well as the heat. 😃

You have guts Mikey. Even as a Indian used to spicy food, some chili's terrify me lmao.
Though one piece of advice : If you going to eat something really spicy/hot or fish with bones, etc then have white rice on the side. It will help remove the spicy flavor, remove the bones stuck in your throat without any injury and prevents your stomach from being injured.
Also, have yogurt/buttermilk or just plain butter after spicy food to protect your stomach, intestines and rear end.

The mask might seem like a joke, but let me tell you, one time I made some seared cauliflower and wanted to put in some red pepper flakes. I put them in the pan and cooked them for a while. It made me cough so bad, it made my mom cough up in her room, and she came downstairs to tell me to stop. The entire upstairs area irritated our throats for a while after that. I can't even imagine how bad it would be to cook reaper.

The Nightmare yeah your through becomes irritated everytime you cough
that shouldnt really happen, it just means ur mom/cook is burning the chillies i.e. theres too much heat going on. always slow cook chillies on a fairly warm heat but never extremely high. also, if you will do on high heat i.e. stir fry, you just need to constantly move the ingrediants in the wok around or add more oil/water so it doesnt stick and burn.although the fumes released from chillies can be quite harsh, it should'nt really make you cough harshly or linger too long around the house like you described. just my 2 cents :)
I never learned to be cautious no matter how many really *interesting* stories have evolved from my love for cooking with hot peppers. I can't say I'm fully tolerant to it and am sometimes overwhelmed while cooking but I at least no longer cook when anyone else is wherever I happen to be cooking. It's kind of like a drug though. I hate it while it is happening but those endorphins afterward just pull me back in.

It's a speed challenge and super spicy food fills you up at a very quick rate. The body can only tolerate the pounding of heat in the stomach for so long until it quits. Rice would make it slower and made him fuller - naan also gives a non-heat layer whereas rice doesn't provide relief with really spicy food.

Yeah that kinda bothered me. 😜 🙄 There’s perfectly good rice right there, and would have made it the curry easier to digest. And I don’t think that it would have filled him (the rice) up per se, as it wasn’t a timed challenge.
@@KitsuneAdorable but its slower to take rice in, which means the spice remains on your tongue longer hence making it worse, most spice challenge strategies are to consume fast and by trying to not stop or else you can really feel the burn which happens with rice
