- The Last One is the Emmy award-winning PBS television special on moonshine in Appalachia, featuring Popcorn Sutton and JB Rader, who were relatively unknown outside of Maggie Valley at the time of filming. The film relies on source footage that was also used for the cult classic This is the Last Dam Run of Likker I'll Ever Make. Both films were produced by Neal Hutcheson (also camera and editing), while the original concept for the project was created by Popcorn Sutton. The similar titles have caused a lot of confusion ever since.
The primary filming was done in June 2002. Hutcheson gave "The Last Run" to Sutton to sell on VHS copies in the fall of that year and produced his own documentary version for film festivals, where it failed to attract any interest whatsoever. He then produced a new version for television, adding interviews and illustrations for greater context. It first appeared on SCETV in South Carolina in November 2008, then on UNCTV in North Carolina in early 2009, after which it was distributed to PBS markets around the United States and remained an audience favorite for many years.

Prior to the release of the Last One, Sutton had fallen on hard times with a high-profile arrest in 2007 following a fire at his still house in East Tennessee, and another high-profile arrest in 2008 as the result of a sting operation. By the time The Last One was gaining traction and introducing large television audiences to the affable moonshiner, Sutton had taken his own life-following years of declining health-in order to remain free from prison. Sutton and Hutcheson had remained close after the filming of The Last One and Hutcheson sporadically documented Sutton's activities over the years up to 2009, which resulted in a second film "Popcorn Sutton-A Hell of a Life" (2014). "A Hell of a Life" arguably regards Sutton more as an individual whereas "The Last One" presents him as an icon, emblematic of Appalachian culture. However, as Hutcheson acknowledges, Sutton's personality transcended any of the filmmaker's designs. For the full story, see Hutcheson's book, The Moonshiner Popcorn Sutton (2021).

My husband is from Mississippi he has an accent ,from there and his daddy built a river boat and and when he was just a little fella the family lived on the river in that old house boat and his mama grew her gardens on the bank of the Mississippi river ,,they had to be careful of water moccasin,s and there were wild pig,s as well,,I just love the old stories ,,he,s gone now but I can share these precious things and memories with my grand babies when they come visit me

@@thomashassall96 sadly, yes. His daughter later recalled Popcorn saying he would rather die by suicide than die in prison. He took his life only a few days before he was due to begin a sentence. His daughter also said that Popcorn had the strength to die the way he lived: according to his own wishes and no one else's. His foot stone reads “Popcorn said fuck you”. R.I.P. Popcorn Sutton

I was privileged to have grown up in a time in West Virginia when the highlight was to sit around and listen to the old timers tell stories. This one hits home cause all my kin folk have the same kind of familiar speech and vernacular as these fine individuals in this video. This documentary is a masterpiece, plain and simple!! Classic Appalachia! Brings me right back to my childhood! A lot of memories! RIP Popcorn! Hope to see you someday walking the streets of glory!

My best friend was from way back in the hills of West Verginia he worked at ford in Lorain Ohio.We use to go back a few times a year n the people were some of the best I ever met.He moved back n I moved to southern Ohio n got a job on the river working on the barges n he got cancer n got real sick I got a call on the ship but couldn’t get off in time to see him before he passed.I have never forgiven myself for not just getting off n rushing to see him.He was the best friend a man could have.I’ll just say you are very Deeply missed Billy Jack Whited I pray I will see you again.A true friend most men could only dream about.

My parents were friends with Popcorn, they were antique dealers and would stop in at his shop in Asheville, and one time he took me and my pops to the back and he had his home made metal gun in his back waist and we go in the room and it's like a sex lair😂😂😂I was like 11🤦🏼♂️They didn't tell me the stories until 20 years later how he would give them Mason jars on shine in all flavors each time we would visit from Florida usually twice a year. He was a good fella! Rest in Peace and fuck the US Government.

I used to cook whiskey at the end of the last century. I had a smaller pot and ran smaller batches, infusing different flavors. It was unique in my area at the time. I'm amazed when I visit the moonshine section of the liquor store and see the different flavors available. The only ingredients I used were peach, apple, and peppermint. I never imagined apple pie and dill pickle flavor would be a thing. I'm 61 and the last member of my family to cook whiskey. I still make elderberry wine and the infrequent batch of beer. Hard work, but very rewarding...

VERY interesting to see, my Grandad was involved back in the 20s&30s. From Knoxville TN to Southern CO. Not many knew. But, he did donate a lot of his earnings to charity, and helped a lot of people less fortunate. So as far as I know, even though he was doing something that government looked down on, he did it not just as his own benefit to support his family, but many others as well. Way to go Grandad. I was telling three friends about popcorn the legend as we traveled from SC back to the mid west and a few minutes later we stop for gas near a little holler and I walk into the store and there was a news paper article about popcorn taped to the side of the soda fountain. Wow ! Couldn't believe it. Since then my daughter moved to SC with my grandkids so I get to travel through Maggie Valley ( which I drove through last spring) and the area in hopes of seeing and learning more about the people and culture in that part of the country. It always interested me, a simpler life without so much drama.

I remember watching this the summer of 2008 on the documentary channel and thought it was one of the best films. If I remember correctly either his wife or daughter was able to create a legal distillery with Popcorn’s name on it
Hey, this is my grandpas background for many years. course it was before I was born, but the story's were great. I'm in my late 70s, but I still remember. Grandpa spent time in prison. Once for chopping of a a knee cap of a nosey man. Set up again after he got out, lasted a long time. Once they came to him said we know your still making. My grandpa was getting older and tired. He pointed at a pine grove on the high mountain, and said that's where it is. the man just laughed said yea ok. well that's where it was. After the men left, Grandpa went up on the mountain broke it down did away with all of it. Never mooned again. this is one story of many. Great memories. Watching this brings it all back.

Superb. My sister introduced me to a couple of guys who made their own for friends and family. That was at least 40 years ago in the hills near Dahlonega. They gave me a shot out of a jar set in "the crick to cool". Had a punch like a hammer. What a thrill.

Thoroughly enjoyed this presentation. When I saw that Martin D 28 guitar, it brought back memories of my folk singing days. Arthritis prohibits my playing now days, have passed the 1971 Martin onto my daughter, with the promise that it always stay in the family.

Popcorn reminds me of my Grandpa. I love listening to his adventures in his life's journey. I always loved listening to my Grandpa when I was just a kid. My grandpa made moonshine and would hunt ginseng in the hills of West Virginia. He rolled his own cigarettes with Prince Albert tobacco from a can. I'm now 62 yo myself and am so Blessed to have the memories of my grandparents and my parents. They survived life by working hard and playing hard. I'm also Blessed that they instilled their morals and values in me and I passed them on to my children. I have pics of all my grandparents and of 1 of my great grandma. I have 1 son who was truly interested in his family history, his father had no real documentation of his family (they immigrated here from Ireland) but he does have the pics of his grandparents, great grand parents and his great great grandmother on my side. They were Native American (Cherokee). This is an awesome documentary of real life history versus the BS hollywood puts out. BTW .... Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs and Carter and Ralph Stanley used to play music with my Uncle Buddy at my Grandma and Grandpas when I was just a small kid. My Uncle was Buddy Moore he used to sing and play with Ralph after Carter died. Memories are really all we have in life that can never be taken away by anyone ♥

Watching and listening to Popcorn makes me miss my Paw Paw so much. I have longed to hear his voice and accent again and I hear it in Popcorn. It brought back a flood of memories. My Paw Paw looked and sounded just like Popcorn and wore nothing but Liberty overalls and long sleeve shirts. He told me stories about him making corn liquor back during the Great Depression. It was the only way he supported my Maw Maw and their children.
I could listen to Popcorn talk all day and never get tired of it as it is my Paw Paw talking to me in my mind.

We met a man who's family had been in a similar business to Popcorn and knew him fairly well, the gentleman gave us a copy of this film . It was enlightening and prompted an interest in Appalachia , the people and it's history. One of my favourite area's of America.
Popcorn Sutton even though he's an old man. He has the laugh of an 16 year old and the youthfulness of a teenager. Something truly Alchemical about this man.

All these law makers and federal agents that try to get away and do away with such wonderful and beautiful people they will be lost and ever forgotten to the pages of history and no one will ever care to remember or even search for their names but these people search as this one and only popcorn Sutton will forever be remembered how old and cherished lifted up high and exalted until the good Lord comes.

I don't rightly remember meeting Popcorn, but I've been out in that neck of the woods and met a few moonshiners in my day. I come from a line of moonshiners myself, almost lost my grandaddy in a shootout with the law when they tried to bust him and his friend. This video brings back memories, boy I sure do miss the Smokies and her beautiful ice cold crystal clear springs!

These are my people, regardless of where I go in life, these are my people. I am proud of them for they are a most resilient and resourceful folk. I can sense ole Popcorn's pain at the loss of something nostalgic and in his eyes just pure joy. I know how that feels. I miss being close to my roots in the Appalachians, even though I still live beside the mountains, I will likely never again live on the moutains.

What a wonderful fellow and a great story. My grandfather made Chili Wine up until he died 20 odd years ago in coastal NSW Australia. It looked like almost clear like metho and had a 'belt' to it like nothing else. My best mate made Wheat Wine in the Central Tablelands of NSW Australia. It was pretty much clear as water, it also had a big 'belt to it. We were both "Shearers" back in those days and drank the Wheat Wine at the Cut Out parties at the completion of the Sheep Shearing on his various family members farms. Watchin this wonderf story makes me miss my old grandfather, who was a real Australian aboriginal "Bushman" and "Brumby Runner". I guess that the various "clear wines" all may well have been similar to the American Moonshine. Love the music and singing - I wish we had that type here in Australia.
A great man. A true legend. treated like a criminal for living the way of life that has been passed down to him, and being a true master at it, And in the end paying the ultimate price, a damn RIP Popcorn.

That's the real sad part with this man's way of life. It wasn't just the money but his way of life, an art, keeping our Appalachian Mountain Heritage alive, Mastering something he loved. 5 years in prison for just being happy, living life, is HARSH treatment considering Popcorn just basically wasn't paying taxes . He went but he went out Popcorns way!

There are so many good stories left out of this version. Popcorn telling the story where he took his mother's lipstick to a cat's asshole is gold. Making himself a pot of beans right on the still.... using the overflow from the worm to wash some dishes. Man was and still is a legend.

About as good a film I have ever seen, the personalities, the skill in making a still and the music. Pure quality and thank you for filming in the best possible way of letting the folks just get on with the work. So many documentaries here in the UK are more about the presenter than the actual subject matter, I have Kentucky blood in me from my Father and I am totally drawn into Southern culture and heritage. The northern states with their taxes have a lot to answer for.
