    It's the "pops" that register louder on the db meters. The sustained engine noise itself is louder between the Camaro and the Lambo, but the "pops" at the rev limiter make significant percussion (just like a drum), so much so that they shake the camera in the video.

  • @WhatComesAroundTM
    @WhatComesAroundTM 4 년 전 +33

    Maybe the grass muffled the sound coming from the gun at longer ranges. Whereas in the parking lot it was going straight at the decimeters and bouncing off of hard asphalt.

    • @ImTheTexan
      @ImTheTexan 4 년 전 +2

      A few factors kick in but in short yes you're right. The buildings helped to create sort of confined space for the sound before it traveled on. The shooting range had a wide up space that allowed less obstructions to stop the sounds from dispersing.
      Now about the gun types. The frequency range will also play a part in db and drop off. Low frequency ranges will drown out much faster than higher frequency ranges.
      Tl:dr - Yell in a room, yell in a field. Which one sound louder to you?

  • @mvdvlist
    @mvdvlist 4 년 전 +22

    Difference between 50ft and 100ft should be 3db, simply because it doubles the distance (dB is a logarithmic scale).
    Difference between 10ft and 50ft will be affected by other things too (how much directional the sound of the exhaust is, reflections on the street etc) but even there you should be able to estimate how much over 130dB the sound level is.

    • @hmayesh
      @hmayesh 4 년 전 +2

      Martin van der Vlist. I agree. The reason why it's not following this is because the meters are too close to the ground and the first meter is picking up the reflections causing the numbers to be higher than they should.

    • @super_slo
      @super_slo 4 년 전 +5

      Also curious if there's a minimum sample time for the meters - car exhaust definitely saturates the sensor, but is the crack of the pressure wave long enough to get a reliable read on the further samples for the firearms? If there's any averaging in the instrument, it would artificially reduce the measurement, right?

    • @hmayesh
      @hmayesh 4 년 전 +1

      Super SLo it really depends on if Freddy had the meters set to peak or rms

    • @dwaynepenner2788
      @dwaynepenner2788 4 년 전 +1

      Sound pressure not only decays exponentially with distance, but the scale itself is exponential. For example 100 dB is twice as loud as 90 dB ( or 94 depending on which weighting is used). It gets more complicated from there.

    An interesting (to me) side note about recording gunfire. The wave amplitude and duration is so high and short that it causes clipping, hence why when you listen to videos of people recording gun shots it sounds so soft. You can record gunfire it but requires multiple microphones keyed to certain ranges, then remixed back together. The movie Heat is often cited as the best gun shot recordings and the director Michael Mann is noted as saying he used live recordings which caused a lot of consternation among audio geeks. However, guys who were actually on the sound team noted they mixed both live sounds with range sounds in order to achieve that realistic snap.
    As for the sound drop off effect that Tavarish found. Sound is a pressure wave moving through air. What trips people out is they think of this as a classic sinosoidal wave that degrades linearly with time. However, as it is a pressure wave it effecting molecules in the air as it passes through. This creates a longitudinal wave of compressions battering on both your ear drums and the mic diaphragms. The frequency or pitch of the wave effects how it moves through the medium of air. Lower frequencies will pass through air molecules easier, thus degrade less as they move through the air. While high frequencies will slam against more air molecules and drop of faster. This is obviously an over simplification, but it essence the sound frequencies emitted by the exhaust are lower, hence take longer to drop off. Now as for the gun that got louder, I have a dumb theory that spin or tumble was introduced into the bullet which created a new harmonic and amplified the sound.

    look each 10 db u go up the sound multiplies by 10, so if u stand 100 feet and it is 100 db while 10 ft is 130 means that the sound 10 ft from the car is 1000 times louder than when u stood 100 ft away. So the sound dissipation is not linear in any form, and the Richter magnitude scale is logarithmic.

    I think there is merit in what stephen said below. The sound will have bounced back from the asphalt and the waves will have kind of doubled up, incresing the sound pressure and giving a higher reading.
    The grass/soil on the other hand will definately absorb alot of the sound or at the very least not allow the sound frequencies to double up

    Great way to combine two of my favorite topics!
    One of the things that may be playing into your sound meter values is how they are weighted. Some styles (and models) of meters are better suited for measuring sustained sound levels, like a car, while others are designed to measure impulse noises, like a firearm.
    Hopefully I win that Barrett! I need one for my collection...

      One other thing to keep in mind is that sound is logarithmic in nature. IIRC, a 3 decibel difference is actually twice as loud, so you won't really see a linear decrease with distance; rather it's orders of magnitude.

  • @Edu_RJR
    @Edu_RJR 4 년 전 +3

    Just a quick tip here to understand decibels better. The scale on decibels works just like the scale on earthquakes, it's not linear!! So for every 10db it is actually 10 times as loud than before, and it's a multiplier, so 130db is 10000x louder than 90db.

    Cool video! The frequency and duration of sound has some impact on the result, which may result in these measurings. It depends on the sound meters and how they are built and how they work, if a short burst of sound measures lower than a long roar from the car. Man, that Lambo is impressive!

    I loved this Video too. Love the cars love the guns. Clint did not mention that the muzzle device on the Barrett directs some of the energy (and noise) to the sides. You may have gotten a louder reading directly to the side as opposed to in front. I think this is why the guns were all over the place, muzzle device vs no device. Also the length of the barrel plays in. Would have loved if you could have gotten the noise levels on the Top Fuel and Funny cars. I wonder on a car with headers and cutouts on the exhaust would do and would it be louder to the side or behind.

    Now that you've got the meters, you should test out some of your tools. Especially something like banging on stuff / running an impact while under a car. Find out why you *should* wear ears when working on your car too. I recommend getting a good and comfortable set of active ears that you can wear in the garage and on the range. It's so great when you can talk normally with them on and still be protected from the loud stuff.

    Very cool video. I'm sure someone already mentioned this, but decibels is not a linear scale, so the numbers you get from sound meters can be a little hard to interpret if you don't think about this stuff every day.
    Decibels are a 'logarithmic scale", so every time you have a 3db increase, you actually doubling the power being measured. That means a 10db increase in sound is actually doubling the energy in the air just over 3 time, so you actually have just over 8X more acoustic energy bouncing around.
    Now the sound associated with the supersonic rounds is a different matter. When you fire a round, there are two sounds created. There's the "crack" of the round firing and the sound produced by the round flying though the air. A supersonic round is actually traveling through the air faster than sound can radiate from it, so sound waves "bunch up" at the nose of the bullet and create a pressure wave that we all know as a sonic boom. The bullet then drags this sonic boom across the ground as it travels. This means that fore really high speed rounds, the travelling bullet portion of the gun's sound shouldn't change much over the first few hundred feet of the bullet's travel because the shell has not bled off much speed. It may be interesting to see if there is a correlation between the measurements of the supersonic rounds and their muzzle exit velocities.
    Lastly, there is one other piece to the hearing damage puzzle. Sound pressure levels (SPLs) play a big part, but the actual damage levels also depend on the Spectral Power Density of the sound. That's just a fancy way of saying the amount of power at each of the frequencies that make the sound. Humans ears are a lot more susceptible to damage from very intense high frequencies. This is why sitting on a subwoofer feels kinda good, but putting your ear up to a blasting tweeter feels like sticking an ice pick into your ear. Gunshots have an intense spectrum that is spread out over the entire audio band, so on a scope it looks like "white noise" You would think that this would make it easier on our ears, but it can be VERY damaging vecause a LOT of the energy is concentrated in a very short burst at very high frequencies.... and because db is a nonlinear scale, 10 or 15 more db puts a LOT of energy in the most damaging parts of the audio spectrum.
    By contrast, car exhaust focus most of their energy at much lower frequencies, which actually makes it sound much more pleasing and musical. I'll spare you the math, but the rpm of the motor and the number of cylinders gives a number of pulses per second that is fed into your exhaust pipes, but then your exhaust system acts like a trumpet (or tuba) and filters out a LOT frequencies that fall outside of the resonance frequencies of the pipes. So instead of getting a "fingernails on a chalkboard" screech from your tailpipe, you get something that make you wanna giggle like a little kid.
    I hope this helps.

    The tympanic membrane (ear drum) doesn’t actually do the hearing and isn’t actually the site of contact with the vestibular nerve. It transmits the vibration of the wave through the bones which pressure pumps the oval window of the cochlea, a closed snail shaped tube. The pressure pumps vibrate up into a certain point in that looped snail shell and the tiny movements in that specific spot of the cochlea depolarizes that specific point of the nerve, which sends the pitch and intensity of the sound waves to the brain to be translated into the sounds we hear and understand. Which is crazy.

    Inverse Square Law is the scientician’s law which teaches us that for every doubling of the distance from the sound source in a free field situation, the sound intensity will diminish by 6 decibels. The intensity of the sound is inversely proportional to the square of the distance of the wavefront from the signal source. A sound’s intensity in decibels can be calculated by comparing the intensity to the threshold of hearing. The sound intensity is x10^ watts/m2 = dB. Use this to work out where to stand so your poor ears don’t hurt :)
