Tavarish, you seem like you're 'wanting' to just go ahead and replace the motor. Pull the motor. Put on engine stand and turn it upside down and pull the plugs. Let it drain. Pour some trans fluid in the cylinders thru the plugs and lightly turn the motor. Then let sit for a few days. Invert motor and spin the crank. I would never just jump straight into another engine just for the sake of doing such. I've worked around too many machine shops that would do what you need before going gonzo on another engine. Just because water got into the cylinders doesn't automatically mean a death sentence. HOWEVER, I know you're looking at the cost of engine replacement & your income stream from the channel, but it would make a MUCH bigger series (more $$$ for you and a better education for your audience). Think about it. If you're going to do this...try methods the rest of us gearheads would try before sinking eternal amounts of $$$ in it. I'd give it a try.

I watch the motor trend channel regularly and they had a Jeep that had bad bearings. They ended up using some sort of leather belt to mend the engine temporary until they could fix it. Well they didn't bother fixing it and it sat for like 5 years. They ripped the block apart and found all the little bits of leather inside. Everything was cleaned out and put back together and it started right up. He's right that he shouldn't just throw in the towel. He could probably get it back to running condition if it isn't seized. It would be an amazing learning experience and more videos for the series

This allows the parts to expand more from the temperature increases from the friction generated from the higher revs without seizing up and braking parts. That is the reason that true hi performance engines smoke a little when fired up. Forged pistons expand more than cast ones and need extra clearance when cold.

People resurrect flood cars all the time after water sat in them without even opening them up. Worse case situation, open it up, inspect the bores and rebuild as necessary. I'm sure Ferrari engine blocks are not cheap and this one is potentially original to the car.

If water get on the bearing then your toast. Drain all the oil out, find the cheapest oil you can find, because you will be immediately disposing of it, and all you do is once you get new parts on the engine, add diesel to the new oil, start the car, and let it run to operating temperature then it off. Drain new but now totally toxic oil out and repeat this process once more and after that you should be good bro. This is the method used to save flood Vehicles and i've saved a few lol. Interesting on your failure diagnostic. I learnt quite early in my engine mechanic days, something like hose clip screw can chew through critical pipes and metal due to vibration. I always check everything for this simple alignment error. I notice mass produced cars use a swaged hose clamp, no screws so the risk is far less. I would have thought an engine strip down could clear the water out. Great stuff. I like it when you taken on cars that normal people would run away from. I'm sorta geared up waiting to hear the cost of the replacement parts, BMW parts were always a dred, I concluded about 10x of Ford prices, I wonder what the "holy cow" factor is on F cars.

Water, if it becomes rusty, can be corrosive. Add whatever else was used in the attempt to quench the fire, plus any burnt oil and fuel, and the engine is likely pretty well gone.
To properly rebuild it by a reputable mechanic very familiar with Ferraris, would likely charge almost as much as a used, running engine. However, even if a new engine is used, it will need to be thoroughly examined (compression check, new chains, scope of the internals, etc) before running it. Any used engine will need to have been sealed so no moisture or critters are in the intake or exhaust. It will need to be completely cleaned. I would also be wary of the bearings, rings, valve seats, and all other seals. Unless it can be proven the used engine is low miles and was recently running before being removed form the car, I would likely consider a tear-down of any used engine. Buy a used engine and properly do it up.

  • @revvedupadventures

I agree. I think you should clean out the cylinders and see if it spins freely. Make sure the timing belt didnt break or melt before attempting this. For the price you paid, buying an engine and everything else you need will probably put you above what you can buy a running driving 355 for. These can be had in the 50s. Engines on ebay complete long blocks are in the low teens. 18K plus even 12K just for long block assembly puts you at 30K... Havent even addressed at that point all the other items that are going to quickly add up. Worst part is even so, at the end its just going to be a salvage title. I see this potentially being a bad purchase lol. I have a 348, and love it. Love all F cars. Best of luck!

I agree with the comments to save the engine. It makes the story even better and if you have to do a rebuild, it’s worth it. I’ve had a couple Ferrari’s and currently have a Maranello that I’m working on (KRplus content to come on a new channel maybe?) but I can tell you it’s rewarding to work on these annoying ass Italians. Something to be said about overcoming the “quirks” of an Italian vs your garden variety “easy” car. Mucho street cred, you know what I mean (ie TT Lambo series).
Anyway, check the bores like others have said and you can probably clean it up. If you’re going to turbo, it’s a great excuse to use that engine to maybe drop a little compression for boost. Nawmsayin, T? If you part with it, I’m first in line for a bad ass table for my shop! DM me on the gram if you junk it. One more vote that you save it!

My bets would be that would be an easy overhaul. It just needs a disassemble and refresh. No reason at all to scrap that. Start by dumping a few oz of motor oil in each cyl and prop open the cyl so the water will evaporate (or jsut vac it out first). Let the oil work it's way down and unfreeze any rings that might be stuck to the cyl walls. By the time you get to disassembling it, it should all be free and prevent gouging the cyl walls. I don't know if it can get by with just a hone or not, but it wont be as bad as you think.

Not sure about this particular engine but usually the cylinder liner is iron alloy, therefore can rust. Having said that, cylinder liners are usually replaceable - some more easily than others. First of all sorry for my bad writing. Is water in the engine relly that bad? Of course theres the question of rust in the chamber. But too my knowledge that enginge hasent been turnd at all whit that water in it so all rods and pistons should be straight and allso valves and an all aluminum engine should survive that. And ass long that the water is in the cylinders and not the crank thr bearings should allso be fine. Take of the heads reset the valves clean everything. Reuse the awsome intakes and weld a forced air intake on them. Force feed whit a supercharger. A usidedown turnd charger inbetwine the intakes. And a one peace intake in the shape of a ferrari emblem would lock sick in my opinion. And then a msd system on that. If it was a cheper engine i would have said take out the plugs blow whit compresed air and then crank it but then you risk leavind debrie in the chamber that may harm the walls. And if you are going to force feed it you problely going to change the headgaskets anyway?

Oil the cylinders then compression test it and use that bore scope for what it’s intended for, inspecting the cylinder bores, I’d be amazed if there is anything wrong with that motor unless the bores are corroded. Even still you could easily pull the heads and rebore it slightly over and fit new low compression pistons so you can run more boost when you turbo it.
