    I'd have that alternator rebuilt. Most likely every wire on the inside is melted. There should be a specialty shop in the area that can do it for around $100. I live up near Virginia Beach and I have a shop that rebuilds all my alternators for a great price. I never buy new ones anymore because they do such a great job. And they make it look like new when they are done.

      My mom's 2004 Chevy Suburban (now mine, as I needed a vehicle because my ATF leak was worse than I thought) had a rebuilt alternator installed after we broke down in Georgia a few years ago and it's doing great! I'd definitely recommend having it rebuilt to save money, especially if GM parts will fit it, since they're a dime a dozen. If not GM parts, I'd try Ford or Dodge parts just to see, since getting parts from a company within your country is much easier and cheaper.

    • @umadbroyolo8413
      @umadbroyolo8413 5 년 전 +5

      Yes the coils in the alternator are enamel coated, enough heat and the enamel comes right off the wire causing a short circuit - best to have it rebuilt. Good luck!

    • @rav4l2003
      @rav4l2003 5 년 전 +3

      Kevin Jooste I don’t believe rewinding or repairing damaged enameled wiring is part of the typical alternator rebuild. However, it can be inspected by a rebuilder to determine if it’s possible to reuse. Even if it is beyond repair, I’d bet a good shop could identify another more common model of car that uses the same alternator to replace it. ‘Rarri parts are $$$.

    get some oil dumped down in those cyl's, Frebby... the longer it soaks the better.
    Also, reconsider re-using anything with bearings in them. They may spin and feel right, but theres a good chance that (depending on the temperatures achieved in the fire), the grease all liquefied and dripped out. You otherwise might be dealing with a plague of pully and other failures one at a time that never seems to end. And I know I sure as hell wouldn't want to be taking all that crap apart every 2 months to fix the next thing that locked up.
    Good call on saving the engine though for sure. If the heads aren't warped to hell, you're set to go.

    It might look dry but water probably seeped past the piston rings and got into the sump cuz it shouldn't look that wet. Do a quick check and open the drain plug in crankcase to find out and let us know. Even if water got into the sump you can still probably get it running again. Depends on if the rings rusted to the piston walls. Should spray some penetrating oil down there to stop any further rusting and help it break free when you get around to turning the motor over

    I would recommend a full rebuild, rather than just replacing some parts. You should definitely check the tolerances of the crucial parts, for distortion, warped parts. It would be a shame to start the engine and having it blow up immediately due to lack of oil pressure. Moreover, some parts might be hardened and therefore more brittle due to the water causing heat shock during extinguishing.

    • @TheCompyshop
      @TheCompyshop 5 년 전 +3

      I doubt that fire did any damage to the engine itself, it lasted maybe a few minutes and started very small before it grew. There isn't any discoloration in the metal either, which would point to what you said about the metal getting hardened. He will be able to just regasket the engine and fire it up without any issues

    • @cavenderandrews9098
      @cavenderandrews9098 5 년 전 +2

      there's no way that fire was hot enough to distort any metal. 1- aluminum doesn't distort with heat nearly as much as steel. 2- Mild steel doesn't harden when heated and quenched, only high carbon steel can harden. 3- if that fire wasn't even hot enough to burn through the timing belt, there's no way in hades it was hot enough to even approach temps needed to distort ANY potential metals in there; be they aluminum, low carbon steel, high carbon steel, bronze, copper, whatever. the ONLY thing that MIGHT have happened was am already hardened high carbon steel MAY have softened..... slightly. but even that is extremely unlikely.

    Just a quick question, maybe it can sound a little silly but why are you so concerned with the water on the cylinder? The car was on fire, the firemen vanish the fire with water that end up on the cylinder and at that time the engine was stopped already. In my point of view the worst thing that could have happened is that the engine head could be warped due to the fast cooling provoked by the water.

    • @chiefpepdesign

    Even if it had water in it..its savable..i dont know why you say that. iYes, you would have to do a complete teardown and rebuild would just need to be cleaned, new rings, seals etc so no rust etc sets in. Especially since its a Ferrari engine, I would do the work.

    It’s a good idea to do a leak down, check that the engine turns and builds appropriate compression. That way you can tell that none of the valves are bent, and it will give you a good idea of the state of the union, if you need to throw a BRS (bearing, ring, seal) kit in it or not. Good luck!

    Cambelt, tensioners and roller bearings should all come as a kit. Use genuine parts only. Replace the cam cover gaskets as they are a one time thing, require a special sealant call caf4. Replace the cam shaft to cover seals too.
    Doing the cambelt change, TDC the engine and lightly clamp the cam shaft sprockets with mole grips to prevent slipping. Helps loads to line the new ribs of the belt in the right place. Leave the cam covers off when timing the engine just incase the timing has slipped when the belt got battered. Advance it slightly too (if it isn't already). Tubi exhaust on this will sound incredible
