I like how at first Frank was talking about being depressed. Then a decade later he's pretending to have AIDS at a waterpark.
Well , it is stated that he has a serious medical brain problem in one of the newer episodes. A frontal lobe tumor , iirc. That can cause a spiral downwards and would explain Frank's degeneration. Although not , I think , the initial choice to descend into squalor. That seems like it was genuine.

He looks more and more deranged every single season. In season 2 he looked professional with a short haircut but now it just grows out every which way and he has giant glasses. The entire show has basically been the story of how low one man can set the bar in being a trash man.
