  • Ever wondered what your dog is thinking? Does he really miss you when you’re gone? Finally, we have the answer, thanks to MRI technology.
Dr. Gregory Berns is revealing how our mind works, helping us to explore unknown connections along the way.
Using advanced brain imaging technologies in his extensive research, Dr. Gregory Berns has helped us better understand human motivation and decision-making. His most recent work explores and details how dogs love us, uncovering the empathy and the bonds we both feel.
Dr Berns' research is frequently the subject of popular media coverage including articles in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Money, Oprah, Forbes, The Financial Times, Wired, The New Scientists and the International Herald Tribune. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller How Dogs Love Us and also speaks frequently on CNN and NPR
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I was a K9 officer for more than 10 years. The secret is not to train your dog. The secret is to understand your dog. Dogs are like kids. They want to love. They need nourishment. They love to play. They want to be challenged. They need for you to listen to them. They all have separate personalities. They tilt their head when they do not understand or they drop onto their bellies when confused. That is a simple evaluation of dog needs. Learn from your dog. Them learning from you happens at the same time that you are learning from them. Be aware. Pick up on their signals. Their behavior changes with time. They figure you out. Then you figure them out.

My little dog (a teacup poodle) lived for almost 18 years. She went everywhere with me. I work construction so she rode in my Truck . It was funny she would not let anyone near the truck and tried to nip and barked and growled almost like she knew it was mine and her truck. She followed me around concourse of malls right at my heel without a leash, she also rode my Harley with me tucked into my vest with a little hat and glasses not moving a muscle as we rode. There are probably pictures floating out there on the net. It was the happiest time of my life. The saddest day was the day she died. I am a big strong man and i cried like a little baby for weeks . Tears still flow when i think of her . She loved the beach so she is buried there.

I think they have their little reaction to negative behaviors of humans too. And they suffer a lot when poorly or badly treated. At the same time their happiness is hughe when treated with respect and dignity. Yes they have similar emotions to us.
      My mini thoughts on this.
I think we will need a lot of time to really start to understand them well. Difficult task as they have other tools than humans like highly developped smell, etc... but i love this studies, i love dogs, and also all animals really.

We love our friends & family, spouses & children of course, with our entire soul & being. However, our dogs, our cats, hamster, fish whatever are in their own category of love. It’s all encompassing, knowing that they will love us to their last breath. Can’t get that from family! Animals understand,
us by their very design, it’s innate. From the tilted head to the hand nudge to pet them to the let’s go out & play, to the I’m here to care for you service dog. They truly are gifts from God & truly love us to their dying day. I’ve had to put several dogs & cats down. I’ve lost my dear parents & sister. I know they are well & happy in Heaven being cared for by God. But, when my animals passed, I swear my tears were going to turn to blood my sorrow was so great & all encompassing. We learn to live with loss, it’s all part of life, but no matter human or animal, the loss is real, & a hole is left in our hearts. I still miss my childhood dog who was taken away from me at 11. I am hopeful that when I die, I will see my loved ones again, & pray more to see my animals. I hope I’m right. ❤️🐾🐾

And, as far as dogs are concerned, I very much doubt that a crow could, for instance, guide a blind person through the city trafic. This doesn't only show how smart dogs are, but it also shows how selfless, faithful, generous, trustworthy, loving and, therefore, admirable living beings they are. Wouldn't you agree? :)

Without describing the method (for obvious reasons), here's how my dog prevented a dark time becoming my end.
My puppy had free access out my back door. She was a few months old.
I'd decided to depart life. In the final act, she came in and put her head on my knee. That recognition of my pain acted as a circuit breaker. I stopped and re-evaluated things.
That was 22 years ago. Eva became riddled with cancer at 13 and I had her put down at the suggestion of the vet. Her cancer was throughout her body and it would have been a painful ending I couldn't allow.

I swear, from the moment the vet techs laid her on the table and swatched where they would give her the injection that ended her life, and until her heart stopped, she looked at NO ONE, but me - and expressed sheer LOVE.
I would swear on a Bible she told me "thank you" and how much she loved me!

@@raymurphy2182 ...Your trying to teach grossly flawed humans about bigger picture truths? I do this all the time, but it's way over most of their heads. Dogs can't read or talk, but have superior humane characteristics than dummied down humans. If a person with their humane thinking still in tact, takes time interacting with just one dog, that dog acts out many of the wisest teachings that are in a bible. (By the way, I stopped going to man made church over forty years ago.) Sadly, simple minded people won't "see" it due to poor comprehension. But by society's lowered standards, these people are considered to have good enough comprehension skills. What a joke that is! Our corrupt leaders actually don't allow many experts freedom of speech. The whole issue of "no proof" of a God has been tampered with, just like so many other truths. The dummying down of society is so obvious to me in many detailed ways I learned how to learn about. Our leaders benefit greatly by using many clever tactics that work on the public to keep the public fearing "the end". This weakens them in many critical ways. They become much easier to mold and much quicker to conform with the stupidest teachings. Reality is much simpler to learn, if you first learned to not be dumbed down by our vast amount of fake and corrupt so called "experts". The things I actually proved wrong against massive odds don't surprise me. I learned to analyze everything on my own decades ago. It was a very time consuming and slow but steady process to wisdom that few people still only come close to matching my problem solving ability. I wasn't born with proven high levels of intelligence. I learned to not trust any typically highly accepted "truths". But that meant I had to prove my untaught ways of analysis credible, which I have done over and over. Many of my longshot odds, unpopular views from over twenty years have turned out to be correct. But guess what? I still can't tell people to verify by googling articles. As always, the wisest realities are not allowed in the media. Most bits and pieces that need to be connected are right out in public in the business world, but they are so hard to even see ....then connect. Our wealthiest business leaders know exactly what I'm talking about. They are never going to talk about this either.

Maly Pejsek people don't buy purebreds because they can do more tricks. They pick purebreds for their looks and for character traits that are common to the breed. Shelter dogs aren't a lower quality type dog. Many of the best trained dogs are shelter dogs. Plus comparing purebred vs mixed, against Shelter dog vs dog with a home is like comparing apple and oranges.

I have a similar story with my dog and I've thought about this a lot. I hypothesize people who can train their own service dogs will have a much higher rate of success. Canine Companions has huge flaws in their model, despite be such a prolific organization. One of the biggest issues being that Puppy Raisers get to keep their puppy if it flunks out of the program. I've heard of Puppy Raisers intentionally sabotaging their success because they don't want to let go. On top of that, you can go in and get the exact dog you need from a rescue. You can even re-home and retry if it doesn't work out, and no one would hate you. But, that's a big factor for success versus trying to breed your perfect puppy, which is exactly what CCI does. And, they need exceptionally perfect puppies since the dogs will be going to homes where the handler probably couldn't have trained their own dog. They need their dogs to be absolutely bomb proof. On a side note, I hope your actually wheres a lead in the store. Otherwise, it would be breaking the law. But, good job. :)

Peter: It's great training your own dog. I have been stuck in bed for some time. We got a great German Shepard. I started out simply teaching her the names of things and to push, pull and hand it to me. We did four training sessions a day for 15 mins per session. I would put 3 items on the bed, then go through push the phone, hand me the cup etc. Once she got the names of things down, we would add new items. After a while she started bringing me things & setting them down in the training area and then getting in position. lol She was asking to be trained.
Anyways, we started putting things around the house, out of the training area and I would say "hand me the phone" or whatever. It took her a little while to understand what we were doing but it's like it just clicked in her mind. "Oh, you want me to find things and bring them to you" As soon as she understood, she would bring anything she knew the name of.
She now understands I can't get up and get things and that is her job. Unfortunately, when she "got it" she started guarding my stuff. She doesn't want anyone taking anything away from my bed or my table. lol We are working on that. Anyways, I think, when you train them yourself, they understand more, you get that bond. Our dog understands when anyone says "hand me the phone or hand me a towel" but she will not do it for them if they don't have a treat. It's hilarious. If someone else asks her, she will get the item & stand there holding it just out of their reach & she won't give it to them until they trade it for a treat.
When I ask her to hand me the phone, she grabs it and gives it to me. I do give her reinforcement, a "good girl", a quick pet and an occasional food reward but she always gives me whatever item I ask for. She understands that I need the help.
If someone else does the training, they do things only because they were trained. I think a smart dog would come to understand but, if you train yourself, you know they understand & you get a closer bond.

Why the dichotomy of "cat people/dog people"? We love both and most dogs and cats can learn to get along. Our cat showed a great deal of empathy when our dog came home dopey from getting her teeth cleaned. The cat stayed with her friend until she recovered. These two don't cuddle or play with each other, but they are aware of each other as fellow beings and live peaceably without any sign of rivalry. They seem to appreciate each other's company when stressed, such as during thunderstorms. I appreciate your effort to document dogs' responses.

My late kitty, Twilight, was brought home as a kitten companion for the puppy I had many years ago. They spent a couple of years growing up together, occasionally being caught just chilling out side by side in the dog's bedding. Even though I grew up with cats, I'd always preferred dogs and rather liked the idea of having both together to see how they got along. It was such a joy, though my cat ended up having me all to herself for several years until I got my second dog, Merlyn. By that time, she had gotten over dogs as a thing and had moved on to a rather peculiar love affair with my ball python, Vader. Humans seem to be the only species that still has an issue with learning how to get along with others who we think are different from us. We can learn so much from our non-human brothers and sisters.

Dogs do NOT love unconditionally. I don't know where people get this nonsense. Try not feeding a dog and then kicking it whenever it comes near and then see how unconditional that love is. That statement is one of the things that clues me into the fact that this person knows virtually nothing about dogs. As a dog trainer unfortunately almost all dog owner fall into this category. I pity the lives that the majority of dogs live with humans. I'd reverse the roles for most dog owners and then maybe, just maybe, they'd get a clue as to what their dogs were going though by being with them.

In a recent news story, 2 pet pit bulls attacked their 22-year-old owner in Canada for no apparent reason while she was walking with them, as per usual, through the woods; they mauled her to death as if acting in collusion. Officers on the scene said they've never witnessed so gruesome an image as the deceased girl with the shredded throat. Both dogs were promptly euthanized by authorities. Sometimes house dogs stalk & kill strangers, even helpless infants. Why? I don't understand. On the other hand, we have countless reports of dogs saving human lives.

Instead she was given to my Mom, who had just become a widow. I spent a lot of time with my Mom after my step-dad passed during COVID raising her dog. She obviously adores my Mom, but she also became my best friend, and because of her totally unexpected attachment to me, I still stay at my Mom's at least twice a week. She squeeks when I pull into the driveway, licks my face off then sleeps by my head and never leaves my side. I buy all of her food and walk her often. She has become 'our' dog.

I love my dogs so much as soon as he started talking about wether or not his dog loved him I started tearing up and the moment my dogs heard me start choking up they popped their heads in the room to check on me and when I saw them do that I immediately erupted into tears and they leaped onto my lap. When my dogs are loving me I feel more secure than when most humans tell me “everything will be ok”

If my dog doesn't like you, then I won't like you. They are the greatest judge of character and can "feel" when someone is no good.

I used to always have cocker spaniels and eventually with age they would become deaf. I used hand signals along with verbal communication and it was so much easier and less traumatic for both of us when the inevitable deafness came. My dogs are and always will be my joy and my reason to live. 💕& I know it goes both ways 🐾🐾 Thank you Dr Berns for what you are doing for us & our furry family ❤️

After loving my dog for over 10 years I turned into a vegetarian. I just can't eat animals anymore. I'm never judge anyone for eating meat as I don't want anyone to judge me. I just love my dog

We have 4 rescue dogs for many, many years. When one of our fur babies pass on, we always find another to adopt. We do this bc they are absolutely the best friend any of us could have to love and they love soooo much in return.

I lost my beautiful female dog, the love of my life, on August 1st 2021. No pain has been greater in my life so far (and I am 41). Just after she passed away I adopted another female dog who had lost her human and was about to be left in a shelter. I said: let us grief together, you come home with me. So I feel pain and joy at the same time, hard to believe but it’s possible. If you lose your dog, just go to a shelter and save another life.

My dog Halley (a small female border collie) was my best friend and the absolute love of my life, it's pretty weird saying that I know but she really was that special to me, she was just unique, velvety soft, cheeky and fun, funny and adorable, just beautiful inside and out. We had the greatest bond and she made me happy like no human could and I miss her every day. Ricky Gervais hit the nail on the head when he said "Dogs are amazing, they have soul, you couldn't invent a better thing or have a better thing in your life, not a house, not a car, a dog, they are brilliant"
