  • How does the human brain work and how is it different from computers? If you think this is too complex to explain in a few minutes, you will be surprised. In this energetic and insightful talk, neuro-scientist Dr. Henning Beck gives insights into thought processes and tells you how you can create new ideas.
    Dr. Henning Beck, neuroscientist and author, supports businesses to use brain-based approaches in order to develop innovative and efficient workflows. He studied biochemistry in Tübingen from 2003 to 2008. After his diploma thesis, he started his research at the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research and intensified his work at the Institute of Physiological Chemistry at the University of Ulm. Supported by a PhD scholarship granted by the Hertie Foundation he did his doctorate at the Graduate School of Cellular & Molecular Neuroscience in Tübingen. He expanded his scientific expertise by an International Diploma in Project Management at the University of California, Berkeley in 2013. Until 2014, he worked for start-ups in the San Francisco Bay Area to develop creative workspace designs and advanced communication styles based on neuroscientific principles.
    This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

    I have been a Software Engineer for 20+ years, in fact I worked in predictive analytics (Deep Learning) for a decade. He is actually right about deep diving into a problem and solution and then walking away to receive inspiration automatically from your mind. This is a common practice for Engineers during design and functional requirements phase of developing an innovative solution.

      @@Brightnight123 i also think like that , he said that we understand chair is something that we can sit on ,now if computer also get programmed like that they will also produce the same output as you , the difference between us computer is something else , our system is way more complex because our input is 5 senses plus the vivid memory while processor (intellect ) is likely the same . but then we are probably way more than that which we don't understand and will never may be like the memory where do it come from and probably the consciousness that we are aware of things. we are way more than intellect to be precise.

      after that he goes on to show that forest and family example on board which again is slightly misleading because the input here is not just the figure on the board but his voice as well and our past memory and our already formed neural network. so there is so much more that just the diagram he is considering as input which currently is not replicable.

    In my opinion consciousness is physical understandable by memories + the functional areas of our bodies, so what makes us different from everyone else (including twins) is going to be everyone's personal memories. Every part of the Central nervous system (in the same way as the rest as the body does) has its specific functions. An amazing property of the brain is the neuroplasticity, the fact that when we think it reacts changing the "highways"= dendrites between neurons. The limbic system (the emotional center) plus the frontal cortex (the brain's area for reasoning) interact constantly (in processing the inputs coming from the sensory and the motor areas) and they "work producing the memories". Memories are thought to be created in the hippocampus (located in the limbic system) and during sleep stored back to the cortex in form of consistent long-term memories. There are several types of "memories", like when we learn cycling or doing some movement, the "central processor" of the motor is the Cerebellum and it's believed it also stores these kind of memories, but I'm specifically referring to the memories that makes us who we are.

    As an electrical engineer I have had formal courses of IA and when doing them, I thought how smart it is but also how limited it are, as the video guy believed. But now seeing how much it has evolved and how much calculation power is available, I believe that real counscious IA is unavoidable. By the same process that give us intelligence and we don't really know how it works and how it rises from unintelligent beings (same as life had rise from inert molecules from the soil), IA is going to born by itself by "emergence" process, drived by our will to develope it, just because probability and the fact that random simple processes unavoidable leads to more complex ordered results if they are leaves to evolved by try-n-error selection algorithms.

    This is good, but it does not tell us what a thought is. All the various talks, discussions, etc. you are likely to see simply dance around the question. Thoughts usually enter (bubble up into) what we call our "consciousness" fully clothed in words - all dressed up in language. Obviously, they come to us from what is by far the largest part of our brain - which we think of as "unconscious". But how do they become dressed up in words? What is the process by which they are formed into language? In what form do they exist before they are shaped into language? How are they generated in the brain? Are they a sort of dressing up of a pre-verbal intuition? If so, what exactly is a preverbal intuition? And yes, I know that occasionally an "aha!" thought (or intuition) arrives "undressed", and must be clothed in words consciously by us. And, yes we do consciously add finishing touches to thoughts that are already formed in sensible language when they come into our consciousness, and then combine them with other supporting or related thoughts, before we express them. But, exactly how do we do that? These are all questions that cannot be answered in broad generalities, or with analogies. But that is they only way we seem to ever see them treated.

      The indipendent thought is evidence of counciousness, self aware brain, we understand that we understand who we are therefor we are, we have thought. This is evidence of the soul, the soul the evidence of a personal origin, this is evidence of God. God the creator exist. He is personal just like the bible describes it because a river can flow higher than it's source.. a apersonal origin couldnt create the personal.

      There is no evidence of a soul or god and if there was we would not still be discussing the matter.

      You can assimilate thoughts to images and sounds that emerge from our brains, it's as if our brain simulate your perceptions and recreate their effects. In cognitive psychology thoughts generate emotions which generate behaviour, which in return generate thoughts and so on.

    • @joejenkins3696
      @joejenkins3696 6 년 전 +3

      Its not meant to answer the question. They all dance around the idea because they are simply created to plant an idea in your mind (how related). he is sharing his idea, and probably a common idea in that area of science of the why an imperfect mind gives ideas and perhaps encourage us to challenge what we percieve as "right" with the people who surround us. He presented this well. Those who answer the question are not usually the most inspirational. But I dont know hwether you were saying that they dance around the question in a good or bad way, so i'll just leave my reply there :>

    7:58 I would say: "It is the mistake in our thinking 'and our ability to learn from it', not the perfection that separates us from the non creative machines." The difference between a brain and a computing system is what Artificial Intelligence is about the narrow down to a point that it is hard to tell who is who.
