This is all conjecture, but their first video probably spooked some investors into thinking they're pulling out of their top project, this was probably made after some panicked phone calls. Would explain why it's such a small demonstration, rather than the usual circus tricks.
“How do we ensure the public has a positive first impression of him?”
“Make him stand up in the most disturbing way possible.”
My first thought was. “ well we’re fucked.”
Thanks, that legit made me laugh, I was also like “this reminds me of the exorcist in the most uncomfortable way”

Imagine thinking you’ve killed the final boss and he gets back up like THIS
Literally second stage
As weird as it is, it's really super clever. Getting up is a HARD problem, and Atlas HD sorta solved it with brute force by leaping up into the air. This takes advantage of the fact that, while the robot is humanoid, it doesn't HAVE to always move like a human.
They will!!!
@@antonliakhovitch8306 I dislike how it moves.
Like the return of the automatons in helldivers 2 ;-)
This is the first time I have thought "this NEEDS to be three laws compliant"!
The three laws only really work well on paper, sci-fi has shown that it usually just means there are too many scenarios where shit breaks, the actual solution is just to be nice to AI so it likes us and doesn't feel the need to end us
@@shanematthews1985 the three rules are foundation rules, there are necessary, but we need more than three indeed

I know. I was noticing that. Atlas is SILENT and AUTONOMOUS!
I, for one, love the practicality of such outside-the-box thinking with supermobile joints. It's a bipedal machine, not a human pretender: anything that works is fair game & more power to it.

Atlas REMEMBERS!
"What is my purpose?"

That’s clearly an assassin droid from Star Wars.
Indeed, I wonder how its operational record will compare to mine...
this probably sounds stupid, but someone over there thought "just because it looks humanoid, doesn't mean it has to move exactly like a human" and that was a genius thought
y aterrador
I think they made a model with the most simple, freedom providing joints and used deep learning to make it move optimally.
It kind of makes sense. If this thing stumbled upon a rock on Mars while running, it would just make a never before seen twist and stand back up in a matter of second. Old Atlas would just fall down and he would likely have trouble getting back up. The only bad thing about the new robot is that it looks like Trevor Henderson's Siren Head monster possessed by yet another even stronger demon that took over its body.
I have been saying this for years. I'll never understand why robots are made to mimic humans, with two arms, two legs, head, torso, etc. That automatically gives them the same disadvantages that humans have. With this model however, it looks like the engineers are finally seeing past that flaw by giving the unit these dynamic joints.
i thought it would be at least a few months
Congrats RobCo. You've finally built the Assaultron.

this is what sold me. They figured out a joint that can swivel effortlessly. This changes everything!
That and the protective cage they had around the head and back

@@justtestingonceIs it?
I can imagine that Atlas can replace its own batteries in seconds and continue working.
@@justtestingoncethis is an R&D unit. Most of its battery is used to power the computer inside it running simulations constantly, so it'll be no surprise that it'll have a low battery like the previous iteration did. That's why both are so loud, the fans to keep the computer cool.

@@ProtoAlpha Genuine question. What impact are they having in the robotics industry? While i find it exciting to see them pushing the limits of current technology, i have doubts about their impact. Correct me if i'm wrong, but i don't think Boston Dynamics is very advanced when it comes to software nor hardware, having lacklustre internal development of either. Im happy to see them pursuing the Humanoid space, but i don't expect them to perform exceptionally well there. They're use too high budget low functionality products, not low budget general purpose.
Again, i salute their work, but am skeptical of their future (as ironic as it sounds)
Things to look out for is their strides towards AI, specifically as it relates to environmental and general intelligence. (This is the hardest hurdle to overcome)
A second big barrier for them is manufacturing. They've got little experience in mass manufacturing of complex machines.
The third barrier, albeit smaller, is their ability to innovate with few resources. You can't be using high performance pistons and metals for a low budget general purpose robot. You need cheap components, developed (and possibly built inside), as no such off the shelf components exist in today's supply chain.
Unironically, players like Tesla, or other large OEMs with manufacturing experience and strong software capabilities are much better poised in this race.
The two most promising players so far (that have been publicly unveiled) seem to be Optimus (a Tesla product), and Figure 01 (From Figure AI).
Id love to hear others thoughts on this, and if i missed any up-and coming potential outside. (Im sure China will make an equivalent company soon, given its importance)
