I am a Quality control inspector for a Berry farm , and I can confirm those little white bugs ARE in and on the strawberries during end of season. This is because of fruit flies ๐ชฐ they love hot warm yummy strawberries. As long as you clean your fruit, youโll be good.
โ@literalghost I culture fruit flies (to feed my pet frogs and geckos), and they would've been in the strawberries themselves. Fruit flies won't lay eggs in water, and if they did the eggs would die. They can grow in fruit or in something with an applesauce-like consistency, but not in something as runny as water. Also, it takes a week or more for the larvae to grow that large. Fruitfly eggs and larvae can't hurt you, but they are pretty gross :P
The only reasons gnat maggots infested the strawberries was because you left them out, gnats are attracted to moisture so leaving a big bowl of wet strawberries out for them is what caused it
Gnat maggots most likely hatch during shipping or at the store. I usually wash them with cold water, cut the green stuff off, put the strawberries in a glass and pour some coke or pepsi and watch as the maggots float up swimming around being poisoned by the soda's caffeine content.
The centipede doesnโt bother me much because it is easy to see. The fruit fly maggots on the other hand were burrowed into the strawberries and only came out after being exposed to (salt?) water for a length of time. Now Iโll never look a strawberries the same way ever again. However, now we know how to safely prepare them. Thanks for the tip Little Puff! ๐บ

You can actually find little bacteria on your strawberry only visible under a microscope, but not giant bugs like centipedes and such. You can try this out by: 1. Get a handheld microscope. 2. Get a pack of strawberries. 3. Get 3 bowls. 4. Fill one will warm water, salt, vinegar, one with cold water, salt, one with warm water, massive amount of salt. 5. Wait for 2-3 hours while they soak. 6. Pick some up and use the handheld microscope to look around, Tiny white things moving around are bugs. You can even find bigger ones, Gloom found a slug on hers once! Just donโt drop your microscope!
I clean my fruits with a mix of soapy water and vinegar in order to wipe off/kill any potential mold spores on them, then dry them out and put them in airtight containers lined with a paper napkin and store them in the fridge. I find that they tend to last significantly longer that way.
I worked 8n a produce department, back when we processed everything but bagged salads and carrots, and it was amazing how many people did not wash their produce! I too use a drop or two of Dawn, especially on things with a haze, like grapes and broccoli. The amount of stuff that comes off will turn you into a Dawn user, too. It is safe and rinses off cleanly, just as it does on your dishes. And the step of drying berries before use also makes a huge difference and something I do easily by putting a tea towel on a rimmed baking sheet, and pushing it back and forth on a counter. The berries will roll and bounce gently, drying them. For strawberries with tops still on, then put them calyx side down for a few minutes to dry that part as well. I also learned while working with produce and the bugs it all has on, in and around that even in the US, one of the cleanest food sourcing there is, a person will eat 2ยฝ pounds of bug parts a year. They are everywhere. Sifting your flour all the time wasn't to make your product extra fluffy, it was done to remove bugs and not waste the flour. You can't avoid them, so just ignore them.

Gnat maggots most likely hatch during shipping or at the store. I usually wash them with cold water, cut the green stuff off, put the strawberries in a glass and pour some coke or pepsi and watch as the maggots float up swimming around being poisoned by the soda's caffeine content.

The centipede doesnโt bother me much because it is easy to see. The fruit fly maggots on the other hand were burrowed into the strawberries and only came out after being exposed to (salt?) water for a length of time. Now Iโll never look a strawberries the same way ever again. However, now we know how to safely prepare them. Thanks for the tip Little Puff! ๐บ

It may have not worked for them but my mom always does this and every single time alot of disgusting things comes out.
You can actually find little bacteria on your strawberry only visible under a microscope, but not giant bugs like centipedes and such.
You can try this out by: 1. Get a handheld microscope. 2. Get a pack of strawberries. 3. Get 3 bowls. 4. Fill one will warm water, salt, vinegar, one with cold water, salt, one with warm water, massive amount of salt. 5. Wait for 2-3 hours while they soak. 6. Pick some up and use the handheld microscope to look around, Tiny white things moving around are bugs. You can even find bigger ones, Gloom found a slug on hers once! Just donโt drop your microscope!

I clean my fruits with a mix of soapy water and vinegar in order to wipe off/kill any potential mold spores on them, then dry them out and put them in airtight containers lined with a paper napkin and store them in the fridge. I find that they tend to last significantly longer that way.

I worked 8n a produce department, back when we processed everything but bagged salads and carrots, and it was amazing how many people did not wash their produce! I too use a drop or two of Dawn, especially on things with a haze, like grapes and broccoli. The amount of stuff that comes off will turn you into a Dawn user, too. It is safe and rinses off cleanly, just as it does on your dishes. And the step of drying berries before use also makes a huge difference and something I do easily by putting a tea towel on a rimmed baking sheet, and pushing it back and forth on a counter. The berries will roll and bounce gently, drying them. For strawberries with tops still on, then put them calyx side down for a few minutes to dry that part as well.
I also learned while working with produce and the bugs it all has on, in and around that even in the US, one of the cleanest food sourcing there is, a person will eat 2ยฝ pounds of bug parts a year. They are everywhere. Sifting your flour all the time wasn't to make your product extra fluffy, it was done to remove bugs and not waste the flour. You can't avoid them, so just ignore them.
