- For over 40 years, the Toronto International Film Festival has attracted some of the best filmmakers in the world to showcase the biggest films of the year. This year’s festival saw the release of Darren Aronofsky’s wildly controversial Mother! and the James Franco-directed The Disaster Artist. Past festival winners include La La Land, The Princess Bride, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. While there this year, The A.V. Club took the chance to ask some of the festival’s biggest filmmakers a question: What is your all-time favorite movie?

Almost no-one gives the same answer, anywhere you ask. It's incredible really.
After all the hype about Casablanca, I finally watched it. Meh.
Then, after i forgot all the hype, I watched it a second time, and thought, "that's a good movie."
Then, years later, I watched it a third time, and realized that it's on of the top ten movies ever made. It is as perfect as a film can get.
I just watched Casablanca few months ago and loved it instantly at first watch and now it has became one of my favourite movie of all time. Also loved the songs like "As time goes by" and "Knock on wood". Now I can finally see why people love it. 10/10 movie.
I sort of had the same thing with Singin' in the Rain. I watched it, liked it, but didn't quite understand all the hype. Then I watched it again sometime later (flipping channels, maybe), and kind of thought "Yeah, I sort of get it now".
I have since seen it a couple more times and it just gets better each time for me. Such a paper thin script, nothing super serious, but just a nice, feelgood movie with some awesome song and dance numbers. I just love it. And I'm not even a musical person. :)

Mad respect to the woman who picked All That Jazz. I think it’s a criminally overlooked and underrated masterpiece. I was so PISSED when Kramer vs Kramer won Best Picture that year (I’m still pissed)

My favorite of all time is "Paris Texas", followed by "Taxi Driver", "Pulp Fiction", "Rosemary's Baby" and "Back to the Future".

Looking down at my writing desk I see my pink soap 'Fight Club' sticker. Looking left I see my expensive 'Requiem for a Dream' canvas painting. I have the soundtrack for Punch Drunk Love. Jaws (three men in a boat) has been my top choice for more than 30 years.

My comfort movies that I watch every year, Halloween 1978 and The Karate Kid 1984.
Movies that I think are pretty damn perfect, Apocalypse Now and One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest.
I'll throw in Jaws which is so well made and can still be an entertaining summer blockbuster.
For a long time it was "Pulp Fiction", but then "Ratatouille" took that place over.

yes, I think actors and directors sometimes feel pressured to name an obscure and exotic film, it's a bit pretentious. But there's a good reason why Shawshank is at the very top of the IMDB: it's close to perfection, one of the greatest ever pieces of American dramatic art
TWO FOR THE ROAD(1967) W/ Audrey Hepburn, Albert Finney, Elenor Bron and Willian Daniels
I have given 10 stars to 11 movies: "Willow", "Alien", "The silence of the lambs", " L.A. Confidential", "E.T.", "The name of the rose", "Into the wild", "Edward scissorhands", "The shawshank redemption", LOTR "The two towers" , and "Das Boot." However, even though they are of the same rank, I love "Willow" the most.
I have a small bone to pick with das boot and that’s the first set piece when they’re being bombed is a bit too climatic and when he wakes up after sleeping through it would be the end good movie nonetheless

My grandchildren, now this year 2023 15 and 12 years-old, enjoyed all the Tim Burton pictures when they wee younger and so I bought them all for fear they kept mine and couldn't watch them from time to time !
Dead Poets Society moved me incredibly but I wouldn't consider it my favorite. I would say something a bit more uplifting like Chicken Run

I have all of these in my top 50 favourite films of all time, plus ‘For a Few Dollars More’ and ‘A Fistful of Dynamite’. ‘Once Upon a Time in the West’ is my number-one favourite and ‘Once Upon a Time in America’ is the best film I’ve ever seen. I love Sergio Leone; he’s my favourite filmmaker :)
