I Bought a 600,000 Mile Lexus Sight Unseen! How Bad Can It Be?

- I made a total impulse purchase of a 628,000 mile Lexus on Carsandbids.com. In the 5 minutes I spend looking at the car before the auction closed I thought of a million mile project and that's what started this whole journey!
We inspect the car in the first part of the series and in subsequent parts we will start repairing this car to continue it's journey to 1 million miles!
This 2001 Lexus LS430 has a bundle of problems which you will see all of them resolved in this series.
Special thanks to the team @Cars & Bids and of course @DougDeMuro for creating such an awesome auction site where this car was found and bought!

How much did you pay??????????????????????????????
Lol total impulse buy. You are a national treasure
Are you going to cost out labour and parts? Or is it just "magically" going to make it to a million miles because you spent $25K on it.
Would be nice if you mention cost of the car , Parts and labour to restore , and was it good on ROI @ end of SERIES ,Please? I'm sure I'm not the only one 🤔
You are absolutely right that Toyota does not build them like this at all anymore. I had a friend who had a 1996 Lexus 400,Dealer Serviced and màintained, for over 12 years.
This guy is everyone's dream local mechanic. He's definitely a class act. Cares, knowledgeable, and an honest guy.
Did he work on your car? How do you know he’s honest? Many of them very knowledgeable BUT many of them treat you like you, especially women, have zero knowledge of the car and rip you off and they are very knowledgeable too.
Sounds more like he likes to hear himself talk.
He thinks Somotomo tires are generic and repeats himself constantly w/ little depth.
Yep, him and the car wizard.
@@champtech8755 because in the social media age, if you just look at someone in the wrong direction, you'll hear a complaint. I've never read anything bad about this guy and its not hard these days to hear "bad reviews". You know his shops name, look up the google reviews. Don't just be a negative nancy while being out of context and generalize everything. In case you can't comprehend what context is, we are talking about this mechanic, not the industry as a whole as you are suggesting. If I based all the comments on the internet off yours, the world will look very grim too.
I agree. I would bring my cars to him no doubt. My local guy is pretty good too
I think you picked the perfect car for your channel. We can all learn a lot from this project. I'll definitely be here for this journey.
100 percent. I’d watch every single video!!
@@wwjoshdew agree
Project Car Guntlet shoot out throw down.
I would love to watch 15-20 videos on making this perfect!
Ok looking forward for more videos about this car.
TCCN cracks me up when he sees a panel not lining up and then goes “that’s ok, ok” When you can tell it’s killing him inside. 😂That’s a perfectionist for you.
Yep and his videos are literally THERAPY for the rest of us perfectionists 🥰
Thought i saw a tear in his eye
He’s in essence comforting himself saying “don’t worry, it’s gunna be okay” 😂
"Well that's interesting"
'its ok.' = so not ok
A car lasting 600k+ miles, even with impeccable maintenance, is very impressive. What makes this car so special is that it lasted that long with a SKETCHY service history! It's a tad bittersweet because this is a level of robustness that very few modern vehicles can match thanks their insane complexity, probably even from Toyota/Lexus.
That’s why I am a life long Toyota buyer. My 2001 4Runner turned over 400,000 miles and it still runs good.
I have a 2001 Lexus LX470 367,0000 miles starts, runs, stops like it should.
Not really lol.. a lot of cars of a lot of brands will last ages with "impeccable" maintenance and this one has definitely had good maintenance anyways. Literally half the parts have been replaced and anything that hasn't is breaking or broken. The crazy thing is the lack of rust, most jap cars are rotting apart in half the miles.
The transmission was replaced or rebuilt at least once. Not exactly sketchy maintenance.
You’re one of the very few people I have ZERO CONCERN about being able to get this car dialed in.
No one cares what you think.
At least we know one thing is for sure, with 628k miles it must have been a pretty damn good car at some point!
....and evidently very well maintained.
Pretty soon, we'll be seeing the majority of EVs doing this sort of mileage.
@@rogerfroud300 they’ll be subscription based like phones. Just upgrade every couple years to a newer ev.
@Roger Froud nope....ev's wont last that long. A well maintained car like this outlives any modern car ev's included.
@@rogerfroud300 An EV could go that mileage but none will be manufactured to do so. EVs, sadly, will become the iPhones of the automotive industry and will be remotely shut down by the manufacturer forcing you into another one.
to my untrained eye nearly everything that upset him wouldn't have even been perceived by me... This is the kind of guy I would love to have access to. he seems to care so much about every aspect. definitely getting some perfectionist vibes. It's inspiring to see someone who has so much passion for his craft/trade
Well said!
Agreed. He says the interior is “filthy”, but for over 600K miles it looks pretty clean to me!
This car belongs in the museum, 628,000 miles is the most impressive car I’ve ever heard of! Toyota is known for their quality, go Toyota! And great job remodel the car!
I absolutely cannot wait to see how this goes. The third-generation LS is my favourite Lexus of all time.
Yea, Agree totally.
Recently got the "Celsior" variant 03 facelift.
Sooo Smooth. Changed airsuspension too, So worth it. Its a Joy :D (except when i had to replace the air struts)
What I like about AMD is what I like about him when he says he does something right he does something he wants to get rid of all the I am totally with him on this my 67 Camaro and it was hacked up so bad I'm now having to fix it all myself , so I know what AMD is going through on this car that he is fixing like what I'm doing on my car all original parts .
Well I shall be dead by the time this project car reaches 1,000,000 miles. It has 372,000 miles to go and that will take 10 years
even if the car does 100 miles 7 days a week 52 weeks of the year.
@@garymeredith2441 67 Camaro . Beautiful car. Kudos to you for taking care of it. It'll be almost better than new when you've gone thru it.
@@VeryOldSaintMaybe YT will have run out of cash for him by the time 1,000,000 Miles comes around.🤔😪🤑
Oh wow I saw that car on auction, I dropped out after it hit $4k. I’m sooooo glad you bought it!!!!! $4400 was a steal
He shoulda mentioned the cost, Then we could follow the investment as it goes on.
Thanks for dropping the price in the comments lol
@@2URLex oops sorry
@@christophermartin972 no need to apologize I appreciate the clarity lol it is a steal.
@@2URLex I was a buyer up to $4k. Once it passed $4k I bailed. It’s on cars and bids still, you can see recent sales of LS 430’s
My 90 year old mom still drives her '01 LS430 with the Ultra Luxury package in the spring/summer/fall. It's only got 107k miles on it. The problem with these cars is that they tend to put all others to shame. The build quality on these is perfect.
It already has 600000 miles and still drives. I think it was maintained pretty well. Sure not by his standards but nevertheless. I think it's a perfect car for you! My 01 ls 430 with 170k miles is about the same and even worse, the interior is mint though. Not a bad purchase.
I have a good father/son shop locally, but wow!
You don't often see good quality videos of the mechanic themselves buying the vehicle to fix up. Very satisfying to watch- can't wait to see this get fixed up
Tyler Hoovey and Doug D, Have led many of us down the dark path😂
*Along with The Wizard are laughing all the way to the bank. YT's eyeballs monetisation is the name of the game.*
It only works for the rich among us.
Yeah, always nice to have a rich douche who gets even richer making people think buying junk is cute and funny when in reality, those situations financially ruin the average person, while Hoovie makes money hand over fist on it. 🤷♀️🤡🤦
Wizard is been telling people to buy Toyota for years.
@@tonymontana897 *Nah. Depends on your definition of "rich". Upfront it's a measly 5 large. Don't need to be rich to write that check. What comes next is a matter of time, dedication and funds allocation. Cheers!*
I truly appreciate your "if you're going to fix it fix everything and fix it right" approach. In a perfect world, every mechanic took that attitude, and every car owner would stop asking for half-assed repairs and actually had the money spend the money to get it fixed right.
This man is my hero! Why can’t every mechanic be like him? Just top class act! Get’s it done right the first time so there is no second time!
Remember, he has his own shop (he's his own boss). I'm pretty sure he couldn't have been nearly as much a perfectionist while working for dealerships, but still would have been at the top of the list of good mechanics.
This is the vid I’ve been waiting for. As someone who just bought an 06 with 103k this has my interest peaked.
Same. 05 173k but same sentiment 😊
103,000 miles? That's barely broken in! You'll be good.
Congratulations on your purchase. I wouldn't trust anyone but you to bring this car to proper standards and specs. Good luck!
So excited to see how this goes! The LS430 is the best all round car ever made. Thanks for all your great videos 🙌🏼
Looking very forward to seeing the progress on this one! Thanks for doing what you do, I really enjoy your videos, and I don't even own a Toyota (but I have, and will again). Your work ethic and approach transcend the brand of the car you're working on.
I will thoroughly enjoy watching you nurse this car back to perfect health! Loved it when you pet the squeaky rear passenger door after opening! The LS knows it's in good hands now!
Dude, you’re smart, this car will make you a lot more money that you originally thought and boost your views exponentially.
Always helpful and informative! This is my favorite channel. Keep up all the great work. I know the struggle or trying to be detective and figure out what has been done to a used vehicle. It can be frustrating but also gratifying to get it back to its original glory.
Keep us updated! Interested to see all the work thats done and how much it costs for all the parts. Love the content!
In 2014, I bought a 2004 with a 192k miles on it and drove it for another 16k over 2 years. What a fantastic car. I replaced the radiator myself and replaced a faulty ride height sensor with one off a Prius. The engine is butter and the suspension was great. All of the electrics worked perfectly as well. I kick myself for selling it because I wanted something more "fun."
I love this channel
You are so good with these cars or engine reviews, I was busy doing my thing when YT suggested your video and you made it so interesting that I spent the next hour watching - I'm subscribing!
Please make this show room floor ready again! I would adore every minute watching you make this car perfect and get it appraised as if it were new! This is a truly amazing buy and I cannot be more thankful we have CCN to make videos of it!
AMD, 628,000 miles on it is not the problem at all. With 628,000 miles on it, it is just getting broken in!!
Love your passion for cars! Please keep us updated!
When it comes Toyota/Lexus he’s the best!
We are all rooting for you Car Care Nut. This car is in good hands-- not a mechanic but a surgeon of vehicles.
This is going to be an amazing project especially with the passion and expertise of AMD!!😊
This is going to make a great series. I would like to see you put a scanner on it and see what the story it tells us on the operating condition. Thanks Mike from Nebraska.
Awesome! Looking forward to finding out all of the fixes needed, and watching you take care of them. That LS is a lucky car to have the best mechanic on the planet working on it.
Love your channel !
REALLY looking forward to to see all the work you’ll do on this project.
God bless you ! 🙏
Congrats AMD!! Can't wait to see this project unfold.
This guy has one of the best camera people on KRplus🎉
This is amazing that a vehicle has that many miles on it in this day and age and is still running. Even though the car has problems, the undercarriage has no rust which means you have a good foundation to work on. Hope you get many good years of driving out of it since you want to take it to Million miles.
I have a 05 LS430. I had the same thing happen with the snapped license plate screws. However, I did not resort to drilling holes in the lower section but for the meantime I have my plate mounted with a magnetic dealer plate frame. Excited to see you making content with this car!
I'm excited to see this project. Even with all the problems you point out, underneath it looks like a solid car. Well worth fixing up.
The pursuit to perfection. Excellent content. I'm keeping up with this LS430 series.
Very excited for this series! I watched this auction on Cars & Bids and there were several in the comments that were speculating you were the winner of this - and I'm glad that was the case! I'm a long time LS400/LS430 owner so I'm certainly going to be enjoying this series thoroughly. Try to get that odomoter to match your subscriber count!

Why am I shocked to see a car like this on TCCN? This is a match made in heaven, and the series will be fantastic. Maybe the best LS series to date.

wow I went and looked at its carfax history and it is an impressive vehicle. one of the highest mileage cars I have ever seen. It was in an accident when it had around 100k miles on it but airbags did not deploy. D&S autocare in washington did the majority of the work on that car.
My dad owns 2000 Land Cruiser. It rolls over 560k miles. It's still solid. Nothing seriously changed. Just a couple of top off oil and replace some spark plugs.....
I can't wait one day, LC300 comes back North America.

AMD, This is a surprise to say the least. Was "Do What I Say Don't Do What I Do" an alternative title for this video? When many of us wished you would replace your Mercedes S Class with a Lexus LS, this is NOT what we had in mind. 😉🤣😱
I think he likes older cars. We all do!
I also owned a 2001 Lexus LS 430. One of my favorite cars. Was so reliable, smooth and ran like new with absolutely no rattles (@150k miles) before I traded it (I wish I never got rid of it).
Man you are being hard on this thing it has 600,000 miles on it and it doesn't look like a pile of sheet metal held together by duct tape. That's pretty impressive regardless of how many hacks occurred in the engine to keep it going. you are analyzing it like it's 100,000 mile car.

This will be an awesome series, we'll have to start calling Amd Hoovie 2. 😁 The big plus for this LS is that it didn't live in the rust belt. Remember folks, OEM parts is the only way to go. Seeing that aftermarket oil filter made me cringe thinking the oil change was probably done at the Jiffy Lube. 🤮Looking forward to my appointment at your shop next week! 18 Lexus owner here never driven in the winter.
Oem parts are NOT the way to go alot of the time for alot of reasons, some being aftermarket sometimes fixes weak or badly designed original parts. Also, some cars simply don't require a part 3 times the cost of aftermarket for the car to work or be safe. Not including that some oem parts are just outright scams that cost more than the value of the car.
@@J_h_420it depends honestly, my window motor went out on my 97 tacoma a while back. Check pricing on a oem Denso unit and price was over $400 for the motor alone. Ended up ordering a regulator and motor combo from RockAuto (picked the Aisin brand) for about $50. 6 months later still works great.
