  • A male Sumatran rhino calf was born in Indonesia! The newborn was sired by Cincinnati Zoo-born Harapan, who was sent to Indonesia in 2015 to help contribute to his endangered species' survival. Harapan was only the third Sumatran rhino born at the zoo and was serving as the last ambassador of his species in the western hemisphere before his departure.

They aren't "in the wild"; they are in a managed breeding program. Even at the point of extinction the animals left "in the wild" were being killed by poachers. We ought to be called Homo perditor, not Homo sapiens.

We humans are something else. The destroyers of land and animals alike. We take with no concern for consequence. We put profit above all else, destroying our ecosystems, species, and ultimately ourselves. And then you get people, organizations, and groups like this, who fight to keep and save what is so incredibly important to our planet. I'm grateful there are groups in Sumatra breeding to save a species. I'm grateful for Cincinnati zoo and those like them who breed in captivity and send back to the wild. This is not the only place and/or species where this is happening. This gives me hope, that if we fight hard enough we just might save many of the things we have nearly destroyed. ❤ Thank you

Wow. I didn’t know this kind of rhino existed. They look so amazingly strange that I genuinely thought the pic in the thumbnail was a GGI image.

I saw Harupan when he and his mother were first let into the outdoor quarters and he was very tiny. It is one of the most memorable sights of my life. I hope they survive and proliferate and come back from the edge.

A hundred years ago, Sumatra was an almost endless expanse of green, virgin rain forest. Tigers, elephants and rhinos were so abundant.
But now, most of that rain forest had been cut down by commercial loggers for profit. The greed and avarice of humans are almost boundless.
What's the use of breeding these endangered animals when they have almost no place left to live ?

It's always and ultimately in the Lords hands. All we can do our best for any species' physical and mental health, in our care.
These beautiful, miraculous God-given creations, deserve nothing less, from us all. Our responsibility and commitment to them should require us to let their natural instincts dictate so they may live their lives, to the fullest.
Nothing makes me prouder than knowing, the Cincinnati Zoo had a hand, in making this birth, a reality in the wild. Where they deserve to be... as God intended.
Mankind must step-up and provide now to return what was taken from them.
God bless all... from the Financial donors, veterinarians, medical care staff, keepers and the general public who make this reality possible, for this magnificent species. Now, let's do it again!

Which one which one of these islands was so badly deforested that they had two females in question who went into the Outback and ate poisonous weeds because they did not want to become breeders and they were kidnapped and rather than being treated for cancer that they got from eating those plants in a suicidal desperate measure over their environment they were held prisoner and given estrogen so that their eggs could be collected and at that time there was a little boy Rhino who was due to come to America and breed, had a wife waiting he was kept to artificially inseminate the eggs of the dead females these people had doctorates and responsible for environmental programs was it Sumatra was it Borneo where was it I sure hope if you s e n t a little boy from America over there that you went with him because some of these places do not contain sane humanistic respect for women. I admit I don't remember the difference between one Indonesian country and another and I am horrified that the deforestation continues in the same way that the creatures who live in that habitat are horrified when the trees fall. And so are they
