With this Rachmaninov 1st Sonata, Kholodenko threw down the gauntlet. Rachmaninov thought the piece was probably unplayable; I think he probably smiled--a rare event, apparently--at this performance. For most of my many years, nobody recorded the piece except John Ogdon. It blazed with drama and virtuosity but was almost wrecked by the RCA's boxy Dynagroove recording. Mr. Townley, below, rightly praised the Berezovsky recording. It and the recent recordings are by Alexander Romanovsky and Zlata Chochieva are superb. To play this piece in the 1st Preliminary round of a major competition takes huge assurance--and brass. But to play it with such mastery? It makes my head swim. It probably shouldn't, since Kholodenko's 1st recording featured Medtner's sprawling "Night Wind" Sonata. That, too, is a difficult and long piece; making it sound coherent is especially challenging. Kholodenko makes more sense of it than anyone I've heard. (He has now recorded the Grieg Concerto, which keeps up the high standards.) So maybe the Cliburn jury got it right this time, Beatrice Rana notwithstanding--very timely after the disaster of the '09 results. Kholodenko's will be an interesting career to follow.

Many people are going to miss out on this wonderful performance of Rachmaninoff's Sonata No 1 simply because Sonata No 1 appears nowhere in the video title. I know of viewers who scour KRplus looking for new performances of this, their favorite sonata, and they will never find this one. Crying shame.

Best wishes for Mr. Kholodenko during these very difficult times.. Besides the recent the unfortunate recent events, it is truly a shame classical music is largely ignored today. Those artist who garner the most attention seem to have the least talent.. These pieces were amazing thanks for posting..! Rachmaninov was a tough act to follow..

I love to listen, your playing is so perfect. This sonata is so beautiful. Every time I hear something written by Rachmaninoff I marvel at .his construction. Rachmaninoff was such a genius! Alexander Malofeev has added this piece to his concerts.

Amazing performance of Rach sonata. Probably the best on youtube, I might I add. But wtf. I just googled him to see what he's up to these days and apparently his two kids were murdered by his wife and she pled not guilty by reasons of insanity. Like WTF!?? I wish this guy the best after all that.

God should be your reason for living otherwise your life is futile
it makes me sick to hear people say they live for music art sports etc etc
because those are futile things which will all pass away oneday

You wanna, you don't wanna. How childish. You don't get what you want in this life, NOR in the next if you refuse the mercy of God.
(1st Timothy 2:5) 'For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus..........'.
(Romans 5:8) 'For God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.'
As for watching one's mouth, observe your own commandment.
