    Kamei's fingers interface marvelously with the keyboard. The player and the piano are connected, unlike many others who "use" the keyboard and the piano. "Gaspard" connotes a gentle/healing gem, BTW. Now listen to it again. If this isn't spot-on, I'm a blue-nosed gopher. Now I see why Kamei chose this piano. It's not optimal for "La campanella", but he could extract enough to convey the notion. He wanted to peg the meter on the Ravel, and this one had the necessary control for the dynamics and mid-range texture.

      His ability to play everything and anything from pp to ff is unique among these pianists. Especially the rapid runs in the Liszt. He plays them at pppp.
      His technique lets him play whatever he wants. Therefore he can change his interpretation anytime. And gives him the potential to be a great pianist.

No over the top expressions. Everything was just beautiful and wonderfully expressive. Whether he wins or doesn't, I'll be listening to his music! Masaya Kamei's program is very clever as it is designed from head to toe to showcase the technical development of the piano from the famous octave glissandi in Beethoven to Gaspard and Balakirev trying to one up Ravel's Gaspard. If only there was enough time for a Ligeti Etude. I am afraid Sun doesn't shine so good in this round, though the preludes are certainly beautiful.

    9:45 Lmao I like how the first guy goes out of his way to prepare a diversely curated, handpicked, and somewhat off-the-beaten-path program of music - and the commentators instead focus on the one Chopin piece he chose
    In contrast, M. Kamei played great, but his program is literally the safest (not in terms of ease,-but in terms of advancing purely because you played difficult pieces), least creative, most generic set of virtuoso showpieces.
    I know that it's a competition, and I've won enough myself to know that they're there to win, but I like seeing participants use this platform to boldly introduce us to less-familiar works - and neglected virtuosic music.
    It's also good as a competitor because your judges don't have as much of a basis for how to judge the Albeniz Iberia, whereas we have all heard Waldstein 10,000 times and have a very particular idea of how best to play it.
    I wish we saw less Gaspard de la Nuit - more Le Tombeau de Couperin. Less La Campanella, more Lyapunov Transcendental Etudes. Less Beethoven 21/23, more Hummel Sonatas. Less Islamey-more Schmitt Ombres.
    And when a competitor goes out of their way to learn something niche, I wish the commentators would at least do some research or bring our attention to those pieces - so we learn about something we're not familiar with.

  • @loveispatient0808
    @loveispatient0808 년 전 +39

    Just my opinion, since this is a competition, I prefer for the audience to restrain their applause until the last piece is played , the way it is done at the Chopin competition and should be for any competition. The “ restraining applause “ element creates a tension that is broken only at the end of the performance releasing a great relief from the audience. At least this is what I felt throughout watching the Chopin 2021 competition. Also it allows the contestant to focus 100% on their performance until the very end without any interruption/distraction.

      Disagree. The Chopin approach works well because all the pieces are Chopin. But at any other competition...it would be so strange to have a program full of variety and big works from different eras...and no applause that the works would normally get. Besides, these pianists are aiming for concert careers in the real world. In the real world, they definitely applaud after each work. (and sometimes in spots they are not supposed to!)

    I have to say I found Kamei’s Beethoven (Waldstein) quite unconvincing, in many instances he missed dramatic opportunities presented by the composer by playing “cutesy” with dynamics. It sounded frankly quite sophomoric. Last movement was the best of the 3 and still, the Prestissimo at the end wasn’t a fitting conclusion of a huge statement but rather some fast passages lacking energy. It’s a pity, I liked his previous rounds a lot. He is young and extremely capable, no argument about that but part of this program wasn’t to his strengths. Having a dazzling technique is great but it should always be in the service of the music, i.e. secondary. Islamey and La Campagnella - obviously the “money makers” but I heard little substance in this performance.

    • @judynelson5038
