I was sorry in particular not to see Honggi Kim go through to the final. I thought his clarity of voicing, the delicacy of his pianissimo (eg in the Liszt rhapsody) and range of dynamics/shading where appropriate was marvellous. A true artist. After seeing the overly political and controversial results today, I have realized that the Van Cliburn competition is not a “piano competition” as it calls itself. While the Cliburn should judge solely based on the talent of the pianists as it pretends, they instead judge based on background, ethnicity, race, etc whether the competitors are actually more skilled or not. They completely ignored the public opinion and chose the route that would satisfy political needs. I had high hopes for many of the talented and well-deserving pianists that should have passed to the finals but did not. I would also like to highlight the clearly visible anti-asian sentiment. The eliminated Asian pianists all had much support for their skills, and yet only one remains. I, along with many others, are extremely disappointed in the ridiculous results. I will not support the Cliburn again after these unfair and prejudiced judgements.

Certain passes were evident from the get go. The good news is that these individuals could give a respectable presentation. The issues I have are that the jury seemed to value things that mean less to me: speed over beauty of sound. Forcefulness over elegant phrasing. The Asian contingent was uniformly polished and finished. If the jury had never seen faces, names, or other markers the results might have been different. But so long as power playing was the order of the day, most of the more exquisite Asian players were going to be eliminated.

Demie - finale | Jinhyung Park, Corée, 26 ans | Programme
Semifinal Round Concert 9 - 2022 Cliburn Competition - KRplus

Congratulations to all the pianists. No matter how expert they are, jury decisions are also subjective that reflects their view and taste so there will always be some protests and disagreements. When I look at finalists, I wouldn’t say the jury was racist, but I feel like they were keeping in mind of a certain amount of political correctness: there needs be a woman, a black USA citizen, an Ukrainian, Russians (to show that they are not expelling the Russian artists) and of course young and the most talented from Asians. It looked like a selection according to certain formula imo. They could make an exemption to get more than 6 finalists but they didn’t want to go Chopin Competition’s direction I guess, since they are doing their best to show that they are SO different from Chopin which is absurd, you are another competition anyway. At least Chopin was flexible enough to give one more chances as many pianists as possible.

A korean is in the finals, many asians were in the quarter final and semis. A korean won the won the 2017 cliburn. A Japanese pianist won the 2009 van cliburn. A korean also won the 2015 chopin. If you think there is Asian bias, look at the past winners of the Cliburn and at most of the initial 30. There were 15 if one counts the two Asian Americans. Having said that, I think the initial screening should be blind, which means he jurors do not see the video and only hear the audio. Also, the jury should publish or talk about the criteria they use to judge. Jurors cannot be objective because after all, they are humans. The differences between the semi-finalists and maybe even the quarter finalists were in very small degrees. So, bias has to enter into it, just as it enters into any judging of music or artistic talent or skill. That's why it would be nice to know what each juror looks for. Having said all that, if you want to look for bias look at only 3 women in the initial 30; only two in the quarter finals and only one going forward.
