A native of Aichi, Japan, Masaya Kamei-at the age of 20-has achieved major piano accolades in his home country. He was the first to be accepted to the Toho Gakuen College Music Department a year early (in 2019). At the same time, he was the first to win both of Japan’s largest national competitions, the Music Competition of Japan Piano Division and the PTNA Piano Competition Special Grade, in a single year. Other awards include the Masuzawa, Nomura, Iguchi, Kawai, Miyake, and Steinway Prizes; the Argerich Arts Promotion Foundation Award; and the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award.
Those early wins not only provided many invitations for engagements-they also changed the young artist’s performance perspective: “I realized that I would now be playing the piano as the champion of Japan’s largest competition. A new kind of professionalism sprouted in my heart that has always exceeded expectations.”
His vigorous concert schedule the past few years includes recitals and concertos at major halls in Japan, such as Suntory Hall, Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall, and Tokyo Metropolitan Theater; and with the Tokyo City Philharmonic, Tokyo Philharmonic, New Japan Philharmonic, Tokyo Symphony, Chiba Symphony, and 21st Century Tokyo Orchestras.
In 2021, Masaya was selected as a scholarship student of the Rohm Music and Ezoe Memorial Recruit Foundations. He is currently a fourth-year student at Toho Gakuen, under the guidance of Hisako Ueno, Michiko Okamoto, and Shoichi Hase. He recently placed third at the 2022 Maria Canals International Music Competition. - 음악

He’s so good! At 20 years old! Such fresh takes, and his lines are extraordinary, including in preliminary round. Most important, he’s one of the few who seem to actually love each note, each phrase, relishing his music 💕
In a Japanese interview he said he enjoys performing in public and he doesn’t have any stage fright whatsoever.
He is born to be a performer even in front of millions people I think. Yet to become a great true artist he needs more than that.
I was a little disappointed with his German repertoire. He is only 20 years old showing a great future ahead. Best of luck Masaya -san🎹💐💖

Someone wrote in his preliminary round comment that he lacks dynamic range, making his playing boring to listen to. When I first saw this, it didn't really click a bell, but after this round, I kind of agree. (sorry)
Maybe more experience in life and studying other art would help, instead of just practicing.
He has a good dynamic range. You don’t know Liszt’s Transcendental étude #4. He just didn’t want to play everything loud as Earl Wild did.
His Liszt Norma transcription on the 1st day was textbook. That one displayed wider dynamics and slow crescendos.

What matters is his control over his dynamics, which in Misaya's case, is second to none. Just because his Fortísimos are not bombastic and don't play to the showmanship-aspect doesn't mean his dynamic range is limited.
He's one of only 3 of the 30 competitors to have chosen the New York-Steinway which is extremely bright compared to the Hamburg-Steinway (Which was the only other piano option available to the competitors).
@@annettefallon1652 I think what RAMSIL882 really accuses about Masaya's playing is being 'cold' instead of a technical issue, given that he came up with a solution that has nothing to do with technique (not that I agree with him).
If you are inferring that Masaya, a 20 year old, is inexperienced, then given his age, you may be right. After all, he has only being playing for 16 years. However, he does not spend vast amounts of time "just practicing". This strikes me as a rather ill-informed, ignorant comment. Young Japanese pianists such as Masaya and Hayato Sumino (3rd round Chopin Piano Competition 2021) have demonstrated themselves to be extremely dynamic players, and have a huge KRplus following, playing a wide genre of music (often live stream) to entertain a large international audience. They are not "just practicing", they are providing readily accessible piano pieces via social media to people who enjoy listening to classical and (sometimes) contemporary music. I can't help but wonder where you retrieved the "just practicing" from...

I agree with you about banning Russians. We don’t know what is each Russian competitor’s ideology or political belief. Maybe anti invasion. Regarding the conductor Valery Gergiev’s losing his position at Munich orchestra it’s clear his position with Putin. Anyways music should be borderless if it’s possible to be someday. Hope you’ll enjoy the rest of the competition 🎹

@A.O. Indeed, music is more precious than politics, ideology of finances. My friend, pianist Cyprien Katsaris thinks the same. Last week, he played in Germany: RUSSIAN Rachmaninov en UKRAINIAN Bortkiewicz. His father came from CYPRUS and he offered the flowers he got to the first viola, a TURKISH lady.
Our competition ended Saturday. Next year is Chant (Zang).
