!st movement of the Rachmaninoff No 2...absolutely stunning in it's subtle dynamics, gorgeous piano playing, and the close collaboration between Maestro Alsop and the pianist. As beautiful as Kissin's here on You Tube. brings to mind the Earl Wild and Janis recordings. His playing sings...and the orchestra knows they are performing with an ARTIST. Even the tiny memory slip, and a MOST leisurely tempo in the 2nd movement cannot deter me from saying...oh my gosh. His poetry is amazing. Ms Alsop's orchestra is just so special...gorgeous playing from all. Nice playing from the woodwind trio at the closing pages. My guess is down the road, he'll allow a bit more momentum..as such...in this most beautiful creation of the Master...Rachmaninoff. I hope the pianist rips the 3rd movement up! About to find out. BTW his pedaling is masterful. 3rd movement...crystal clear finger work. Love that rubato of Ms Alsop's at the end of the development at 57:43 total elapsed time. High drama!! Some beautiful, individual pianistic expressions. I might have liked just a wee bit more drive in the middle of the movement, but overall, this was MORE than a competition performance...it was the REAL DEAL, start to finish. The closing restatement of "Full moon and empty arms"...haha... was gorgeous, thrilling...especially the Rachmanovian near NO sustain pedal on the rousing finish. IMO, this performance has endeared itself to me as did the famous..rightly so Olga Kern/James Conlon collaboration of the Rach 3rd decades ago. Congrati;atopns to all on this most magical performance....and it was FREE.

A shame the orchestra wouldn't respond to maestro Alsop regarding the Prokofiev. Mr Choni wasn't asking for anything more than the proper tempo from them. It wasn't the conductor...It was if the orchestra just wasn't into it. It will cause a pianist to lose focus. That said, the great pianists find a way to carry on. he did as best he could. That said...he has tremendous technique, and a wonderful feel for this music...octaves galore. There was much to like in his performance. The judges will take certain things under consideration. Some of them have been there. A nice career ahead for all 3.

This is not the core Fort Worth Symphony. This is a group of musicians doing a pretty decent job with the monotonous, masturbatory nature of both The Cliburn and piano concerto repertoire. They have a pretty big undertaking for such little credit. No sane orchestral musician enjoys accompanying piano concerti day after day, hour upon hour....the thought is asinine.

That was quite exciting for pianist Dmytro Choni. Its to bad he had a memory lapse in the third movement, it was going so well. I have to say the conductor really is not up to par. He wanted to go much faster, she simply couldn't pick up his cues, and it looked like the orchestra couldn't play fast enough...I think they can't rely on sight reading, inexcusable.

@@patmoulds They keep calling her brilliant, she is far from it, they could definitely do with a new conductor. The Maestro who conducted the Mozart Concerti was excellent, why not use him, he is far superior.

I'm surprised pianist don't choose the Paganini Rhapsody. It allows the pianist free reign of interpretation, and showcases their ability to hang with the orchestra....listening to Rachmaninoff playing it as I type this...recorded. of course! Would have been even better with Stokowski rather than Ormandy.
