- A 9-minute clip from the the Peabody-Award winning television documentary focusing on the personal drama of the performers behind the Eleventh Van Cliburn International Piano Competition (2001).
Featuring Olga Kern and many other competition participants, Playing on the Edge, examines the day-to-day experiences of the young pianists taking part in one of the world's most prestigious music festivals.
Emmy award-winning producer Peter Rosen takes viewers inside the competition and provides a rare look at the participants as the film explores the personallives of the artists.
The film explores the relationship between the pianist as a person and the pianist as a performer. It brings a realistic approach to the world of classical music through the use of cutting-edge digital technology and an unflinching search to depict "real life" during the competition.
Thirty young pianists representing a dozen countries competed before capacity audiences and 13 jurors. - 음악
Pompa Baldi is my friend, I to know him.
Is an excellent person!!
I am so glad Van Cliburn was still alive for Olga.
I heard and saw Olga Kern in person about 7 months ago, and I was just completely impressed by her brilliant virtuosity!!
That kind of passion moves the world and makes me cry.
I want to have a dream about Rachmaninoff too! Now we know why you and Rach
get along so well. Your music is gold. Love from Texas!
i love her!!!! is so musical and so human
Olga! Great! Bravo....Great pianist in Century! Great Women Pianista!
Well the award ceremony moved me to tears, facinating how tears are there for the joy. Look at the length of the fingers on Van's hands when he Hugs Olga at the award ceremony. You can get this film on Netflix, a wonderful film. I'm a guitar player myself. I suppose a guitar is like a piano a bit, with the strings and the fideling with the vibration of them.
Unbelievable performance from Olga. She is SO passionate! Definitely worthy of gold!!!
She looks SO BEAUTIFUL in that little, red dress!! Red must be her favorite color to wear, because she was also wearing a red dress when I heard and saw her in person.
Excellent video.
Thank you, I truly appreciate such amazing pianists such as Olga and Stanislav, Olga just completely impressed me!!!
That performance seriously almost moved me to tears! That was incredible
Olga is a beautiful talent. Love to hear her play !
This is so great!
wow...what beautiful human being!
This REALLY speaks to the making of a champion! BRAVA!
Tome, Olga is the most worthy winner of this competition since its establishment. But don't underesimate Pompa Baldi. I've heard him and he's phenomenal.
I never realized the first prize was awarded to both!
Exelente. !!!! Competencia. .🤩. No entendí nombre del que ganó. .

A great talent!
Brilliant! Brava! TY.
Thx for sharing - great posting=
@ginocretino, yes, she has a dream of him talking to her, lol.
At the beginning she says that "At 17, I had a dream...."
She is a phenomenal pianist
La mùsica es la verdadera generadora de paz de paz sin fronteras, sin Nacionalismos, sin guerras frias, sin regimenes ,solo el reconocimiento al arte que une con lazos indestructibles
Unreal!
Great video!
Olga has a cute Russian accent! :-)
@yamahaU3 Yep - Veda Kaplinsky. I believe she's chairwoman of the piano dept at Julliard now.
Olga's program and concert info is now up on the Edison Symphony Website
WOW!
I'm so glad I'm not one of the judges, they have the hard task of figuring out the narrow margins of who wins, and who doesn't!!
the conductor almost drops the baton at 3:40. haha lol.
olga kern is great. her story is really funny.
I'd love to see Olga playing and Gergiev conducting...
Check out the Edison Symphony for an upcoming performance with Olga Kern.
If they BOTH tied for 1st place, why only show a video of Olga? Please make a video of Stanislav Loudenitch!
That's what I've been saying all along, that she's a beautiful woman apart from being such an outstanding pianist.
I know, I'm SURPRISED that the Van Cliburn Foundation has not posted any videos of the heartbreak kid here on KRplus. Do you know where I can find any CDs of Stanislav Loudenitch? Please let me know.
Does Stanislav tour in the US? Please let me know. If so, I would love to listen to him in person. I've only heard and seen Olga in person, and her level of virtuosity was so impressive!!
@TamayoAnthony Thanks for spelling his name.
I thought so for a sec but I think thats Stanislav Ioudenitch's wife. She was seated near him and they showed her when he won. Also if you watch the footage at the end as the credits scroll by you'll see the two of them playing with a little girl who I assume is his daughter.
Too kewl ! Is this available for purchase on DVD somewhere ? I'd love to see the whole documentary.
I didn't quite understand the announcer's pronunciation...does anyone know the name of the guy that tied with Olga for 1st place??
Thanks everyone for the answer. This is the same one as in 'Shine'??
does anyone know the background song playing when olga is speaking on the telephone? Ive heard it before but can never place it =/
the conductor is james conlon isnt it?
Is the lady at 4:17 on the left a teacher of piano at Juliard?
LOL! The look on their faces when they found out that 3rd place was not awarded!
Why is Stanislav called "the heart break kid"?
Rachmaninoff jest fantastyczny ! Gra rewelacyjna !
What piece is she playing? Thanks
Can someone tell me the name of the tune at 7:35? I think it's Tchaikovsky, but couldn't be sure. Thanks!
It is. It's the second movement of his 1st piano concerto. (Apologies for being 13 years too late)
Olga is a babe. She looks good and plays magnificently.
is the girl at 5:25 Helene Grimaud??
whats the song at 8:25
opening to Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3 (more like 8:30 when Kern returns to Moscow to see her son)
Whoever asked if Olga Kern has down syndrome should be very thankful he doesn't have to deal with me in person.
From 0:25 and on she is totally like "Visitor #1" from David Lynch's INLAND EMPIRE.
T o t a l l y !!
thank god she is a pianist and not a singer
rachmaninoff told her??? she must hav been born some time ago. She must've aged very well :)
She really is an amazing pianist, but her voice.....
