I am 75. When I watched and listened to you 3 days ago I cried. It has taken me this long to comment because every time I thought (which was often) tears fell. I WANTED TO HUG YOU, like only your favorite aunt would. I wanted to sit and listen until you wanted to stop. I wanted to provide a comfort and support to you a young Black man struggling with this ...
As I watched your face, body language and listened to your voice not just the words, I wanted to give you a hug. Trevor you are not alone here, you have a great aunt sending hugs and support.

I felt everything you said. I have experienced this from an early age. I can remember being in the 1st grade and the teacher asked all of us what we wanted to be when we grew up. I said I wanted to be the president of the world. The teacher and the class laughed at me and one boy shouted out," You can't be president, your black." The teacher didn't object to his statement. This happened in 1979. The teacher was old then, I wish she lived to see Obama become president. I am a teacher now and it embarrasses me that she was a part of our occupation. Complete disregard for a young boy's elevated aspirations. I have never gone to jail, but my skin has allowed me the opportunity to "interact" with the police many times.

Trevor's point on 'social contract' verbatim:
"I saw so many people online saying, 'These riots are disgusting, this is not how a society should be run, you do not loot and you do not burn, this is not how our society is built!'. And that actually triggered something in me and I was like 'Man okay, society? What is society?'. And fundamentally when you boil it down, society is a contract we sign as human beings amongst each other. 'Amongst this group of us, we agree in common rules, common ideals, and common practices that are going to define us as a group.' That's what I think a society is, it's a contract. And as with most contracts: the contract is only as strong as the people abiding by it. But if you think of being a black person in America who is living in Minneapolis or Minnesota, or any place where you're not having a good time, ask yourself this question when you watch those people: What vested interest do they have in maintaining the contract? Like, why don't we all loot? Why doesn't everybody take? Because we've agreed on things. There are so many people who are starving out there, so many people who don't have. There are people who are destitute when the virus hit and when they don't have a second paycheck they are already broke. Which is insane but that's the reality. But still: think about how many people who don't have, the have-nots, say: 'You know what, I'm still gonna play by the rules even though I have nothing because I still wish for the society to work and exist'. And then some members of that society, namely Black American people, watch time and time again how the contract they have signed with society is not being honored by the society that has forced them to sign it with them. When you watch Ahmaud Arbery being shot and you hear that those men have been released and, were it not for the video and the outrage, those people would be living their lives, what part of the contract is that in society? When you see George Floyd on the ground and you see a man losing his life in a way that no person should ever have to lose their life, at the hands of someone who is supposed to enforce the law, what part of the contract is that? And a lot of people say, 'Well, what good does this do?' Yeah, but what good doesn't it do? That's the question people don't ask the other way 'round. 'What good does it do to loot target?', 'How does it help you to loot Target?'. Yeah but how does it help you to not loot Target? Answer that question! Because the only reason you didn't loot target before was because you were upholding society's contract. There is no contract if the law and people in power don't uphold their end of it."

My parents never had to worry that my brother would get shot by police or that we would get a lesser education or salary, because of how we look. I never experienced racism towards me (or much racism overall - where I live, people are pretty open), so apart from reading about it, learning in history classes or seeing a few minutes here and there on TV, there isn't much of an experience I could rely on to even try to get the bigger picture. So yeah, it's exactly for white people like me (seriously, I might blind people when I'm out in the sun) and I'm very thankful for it!

And the police then has an angle to spin the story saying he got attacked that’s why he pulled the gun or whatever. I think they were brave enough to record and spread the video of what had happened and they were brave enough to call the paramedics and yell at the police. We can’t ask more of them.

And the power is now rigged so moral leaders can't win. And the anger over the consequences is growing. Either those in power start acting better, or the shit will blow up in their face. And I fear they're too disconnected, too entitled, too rich, too White (as in racist White, not human white) to understand.

I remember the civil rights movement, I remember the riots ...almost everywhere at one time or another; Chicago, 1969 comes to mind. I remember the murder of Martin Luther King. At he age of 13, I was already wondering; what is going on here?

These Christian Congregations have been at it all of their lives, and they get it, but are shielded from the real clash. In my most recent message I talked about connecting the dots; the dominoes. Rather than focusing on the injustice of his murder and those that murdered him, you rather try to dig and find some justification for his death. Trying to find why we should be ok with his murder or to justify why you think he deserved to die. Your thinking is why there are protests and anger that has over boiled into the streets. Because you rather find excuses for the abuse of power rather that finding ways to have equal justice for all. That’s what the protest is about, equal treatment and justice under the law. Police are expected to uphold the laws but they train for a handful of weeks and then are out in the field. These cops are not trained and vetted. There's also an attraction to the macho image of a cop in America. Compare American cops to the ones in UK and you'll get the idea that cops here in the US are allowed to escalate an interaction. An African American person stopped by a cop for missing a turn signal and the cop walks up to the car with his gun out... this is bewildering. It does not happen in any of the other developed countries. Cops in the US for the most part are not trained the way they should be and this is why the system needs to be overhauled.

I love this video. Trevor is so eloquent and invested in everything he does. I 100% agree. I will admit, my mom, who lives outside of the states, was deeply scared for me due to the looting and riots, but I tried my best to help her understand the level of frustration that led to that. I'm predisposed for COVID19 due to health issues so I can't participate in protest but I've been trying to help from home, one of the things I'm doing is translate as many sources of information as possible to help educate my people in the events and how to help. I'd love to translate this video as well but it's not open for contribution, I may have to make a transcript instead.

As a 50yo white man, I have been anti-racist my whole adult life -- and vehemently so for the last 20 years or so. I've spent years looking at hard truths and scouring the racism, prejudice, hate (and homophobia) that I grew up with out of my psyche. But I'm not trying to get people to see me as "one of the good ones" or some crap. I do it out of SELFISHNESS! I do it because I REFUSE to live without my soul. I DEMAND it.
So when I become aggressive in my intolerance of racism, it's not because I'm some damn "hero". I'm just not giving up my soul by enabling, tolerating or ignoring your racism. Racism is a disease. Racists themselves may not be my enemy, but they are carriers of a disease that's going to have to go one way or another. So if you're a white American and you think that racism is only a problem for non-whites...

They allow these crimes against the public to happen daily, but only the outright deaths make the news. They all know the state of things, they all know who these 'bad apples' are, and they don't stop them. They don't get them fired. They don't arrest them. They don't act to make things better. They let things fester for years, for decades. In that way, they are complicit. They deserve to be judged for that.

In a way, Trevor getting the gig for the Daily Show was kind of a disservice. His ability to deliver heartfelt and sincere insights is so much greater than what he can churn out for the highest level of pop news media on a daily basis. When he does these scrappier essays and harder interviews from his housing and outside the production studio, it's just so much more relatable.

However, that is not the excuse that people should be looting randomly.
If u r looting a convenient store, the owner of the store may well follow the "contract" before, should he/she be looted??????? Is that fair to he/she. So now, the owner have 100% excuse to loot back to those people on the street. If every body act in this way we will have a endless loop of looting each other - it is gain nothing but troubles.

@UCnBbv4X-givO8Emcuz2_ROA perfectly agree with you. I'm actually disappointed Trevor thinks this way. More so that people found it an acceptable logic. Its not right, but the thing that started the protests and looting isnt right either. When people were kneeling at sports games, they were wrong. When people marched in streets, they were wrong. They will always be wrong, all protest will be wrong. All that adds up to the looting we see today.

Genuinely impressive how the replies to this particular chain have missed the entire point of what Trevor is trying to get across.
Generational and systematic cheapening of life has the effect of further cheapening life. The replies are focused on the outcome of this specific event, whilst not considering the ingrained anger and emotion built up on centuries of social and economic discrimination.
To be clear, I do not loot and never would, and I find any attacks on any person whatever their race to be abhorrent. But, the question Trevor has put forward is whether, in society, if you see the “supposed” leaders of society not adhering to the rules or being subject to the expected punishment...what is the bind to you breaking the rules? Black people in the US have been subjected to centuries of white authorities breaking the rules without punishment....is it truly a wonder that some people feel aggrieved to the point of breaking the law themselves?
