Simply put its Cosmic horror. Letting our brains fill in the gaps of what we've been told will be scarier than whatever they could show us, goes back to the innate fear most have for something unknown

A little theory of mine: the creature is the physical manifestation of one’s greatest guilt. It may seem like it’s “not so bad” or confusing enough to say “oh my God what the f*ck is that?” but once you finally recognize it, it drives you mad to the point where the only way to stop it is to end your own life.

Man, I am gonna miss MatPat. He was a big part of my childhood and I didn’t even realize it until I was in 8th grade.
But that’s just a theory.

Bird Box as a book came out several years before A Silent Place was written. It definitely isn't a ripoff, but it makes sense that the timing of the movie being made could have been because of the success of A Quiet Place

Can we just appreciate the Camera man for being able to survive long enough to make this movie for everyone

The reason this concept of an unseen villain is so brilliant is that the people who watch the movie can fill in what they fear them most. The reason why characters like Master chief, Predator, or Ghostface are so popular and successful is because the audience can see what they think the monster or character looks like. This makes them popular because the audience either resonates with them or fears them.

I think that the thing that surprised me more than anything about Bird Box was the amount of underrated talent in it. John Malkovich, Tom Hollander, BD Wong, David Dastmalchian, Sarah Paulson, and of course Sandra Bullock.

How to survive this monster
Step 1: be the cameraman

You mentioned the monster being like infinity, I have a similar but way different theory.
There are two things the human brain can't comprehend, Infinity and Nothing. I also believe that the suicidal thoughts are caused by the brain not understanding what it see's. While Film Theory says that the monsters are a representation of infinity, I suspect the opposite, Nothing.
The monster for one can't interact with the real world because it is "Nothing". Having nothing to use to interact with the real world. The Incarnation of "Nothing" also uses the voices of dead people, the dead are no longer here and therefore are "Nothing" in most scientific theories on what happens after death.
I do not think it is a variation on a previous creature, but the human mind now trying to comprehend something not able to be seen until that point.( I'm not quite sure about how the brain can now see the monster. I suspect it is an evolution of the brain to start, but not be able to finish, comprehending it.
This could also be the reason certain insane people are able to "see" the monster. Some crazy people see the world in their own way, so it would alter Nothing into something. One great example is the Joker movie, Where he imagines his own fantasy because he is insane.
The reason the car's alarm would react is because something turned into nothing and it changed something that would indeed set off an alarm. a similar thing for how it casts a shadow, the air gets moved and there is no longer something that the sun can transfer light through.
The birds in this movie act as a warning for when something bad is about to happen, they can chirp out to warn others. The birds would most likely feel "Nothing" ( some sort of coldness or darkness, but most likely something we never felt before) and would react.
That is my personal theory. It probably isn't the whole story, I couldn't really check every possibility because this is not my job. This was just something I thought about after the fact. Also thanks to @shadowless454, I had no idea why the birds chirped until I read your comment.

Fun fact: In the next bird box movie they made. Our protagonist is one of the people who saw the monster. And everyone who's seen the monster keeps calling it an angel.
Oh and when the protagonist opens there eyes, After they have died these gold things go up in the air. I suspect those are spirits. In all seriousness, there's a lot more religion in the next bird box movie than there is in this one

I was thinking that the monster was actually death personified. Like not singular, more like grim reapers of all types from across the world. That would help explain why they can’t open doors, why they are described as beautiful and not too bad once they see them, and why the drawings are so varied. They’re seeing different regions of the grim reaper. It explains the ability to change their voices to dead and living loved ones. The only thing it doesn’t explain is why the insane aren’t affected.

Bird Box Bercelona is actually a great movie, and I'd love to see MatPat make a theory about it

I like that the entity is never seen in Bird Box. The fact that characters appear to be able to see it, but the audience never does, makes it that much more chilling to me.

Watching this video after the second movie just makes me so happy for no reason

I just read the books, they are amazing. All we get to know about the creatures is that they are not violent, creature is not the right term for them, they make some weird quiet sounds like steps, they have a sense of gathering around specific places, they can climb to the roofs of houses, they can not be "trapped" or "captured" as a creature, they somehow multiply because it's said they have likely tripled 17 years after the first event.
Also, in the second boom called Malorie, spoilers ahead, it is discovered a way to see again and live normally, everyone can see again and live normally while using a two way mirror, but the "creatures" never go away.

I finally figured out what the Birdbox monster is:
Sonic The Hedgehog (2019)

What makes sense to me is that its ability to mimic loved ones and such might not be intentional to the monsters. It might just be a part of it that it unintentionally uses to capture souls, like how we use food in traps.

I think in my opinion that Charlie was right about it being the demons/spirit that takes the form of youre greatest lost or fear because in that one scene we see a girl see the bird box monster and she said “mom” which was later revealed by the guy that her mom was dead. Not just that but the bird box monster can also sound like our loved ones which the bird box monster used to try to trick Malorie and the two kids to remove there blindfolds. Also I think there are a lot of monsters and not only one monster and they are also different monsters due to the different reactions of people, I also think that these monsters have different abilities like the one where it can mimick voices while others couldn’t.

I wonder what would happen if there’s a crossover with the creatures from bird box and the creatures from a silent place in the same universe/town. Like what would that be like realistically if they had to walk around without seeing but also make sure not to make noise.

i was rewatching this video cause its one of my favorites and then i wanted to watch bird box again for funsies and theres a new one! if my some miracle you see this it would be awesome to see another theory on the new movie!

I was under the impression it was some sort of eldritch being/s due to the fact that according to most lore about the old ones, just seeing them caused your brain to basically go haywire and either make you self harm, hurt others or just go utterly bonkers. Which tracks, especially if you consider the only people that don't just go crazy already ARE crazy. I think the more important question is to ask, what sort of mental illness to people in this universe have to have to not go loco.

I have a question about the theory, Mat Pat said that "The dead in Christ shall rise first", and he uses that for people in birdbox hearing the dead. However, at 12:49 of the video he also says that the entity mimics the voice of Mallory who is the protagonist to get her kids to remove their blindfolds. Mallory is not dead though therefor ruing this part of Mat Pats theroy.

I would think that NOT KNOWING what the monster is is part of the scare. The unknown invokes fear.

I can't get over what MatPat named the 3 drawings. It sound like someone's weird, kinky fantasy. It is just heart wrenching that he's leaving all the theorist channels. 13 years and MatPat's retiring and letting new people inherit the 4 amazing channels we grew up with. These horror film theories are constantly giving me paranoia but i cant stop watching them (someone pls help me lol)

This theory no longer holds due to the new movie bird box barcelona. The main character seemed like a good person so i think it is triggered due to trauma. it picks people who have great faith or great trauma and uses that to manipulate them into killing the others. he realized this towards the end of the film and they actually put forward a good arguement saying that they might be quantum beings

Is it possible that when it comes to storytelling the audience is just not meant to see or know the monster. The idea builds a sense of subconscious realism for the audience because seeing is believing & keeping the true sight of the monster a secret adds to the same fear response the characters in the film are undergoing.

What if birdbox and a quiet place is part of a trilogy about seeing no evil, speaking no evil, and hearing no evil...

The monster is just a glimpse of KRplus rewind 2019.......

One thing about these creatures (versus A Quiet Place) I like, is that you have a better chance of survival. Its so hard to not make any sound. If you do, some terrifying creature will literally eat you or chop you to bits. At least in this story, they only need to be blind folded outside. As long as you cover the windows, you are "safe"/safer.

Definitely want to research the significance behind the biggest parts of the movie. Birds. I wonder if birds have any religious or cultural significance in a rapture/protection situation. Could just be a thing thrown in there to help the characters out and provide depth, but the last scene with all of the flying birds in the garden like safe house seem significant image wise
