About 15 years ago Easy Jet did this to me, they told me it had to go into the hold and I would have to pay a fee. I asked for my bag back and went to the toilet and put half of my clothes on, it got weighed again by the same lady and she said that the bag is now the correct weight. I went through passport control straight to the toilet and put all of my clothes back into my bag.

I had to do this with about 7 winter jackets when I was moving from Vancouver to NZ, it was summer in NZ and my carry on changed there, I had 2 carry on and they were fine in Vancouver and Brisbane, but on my connecting flight from Auckland to Christchurch they decided it was too much, I'd have to pay $160 for that, with zero dollars it's kinda difficult so I put on all my jackets and the bag was good to go! Security promptly asked me to remove them as my name was being called (1.5hrs from landing to get onto this flight, waiting at gate and customs and Security ate up so much of that time.) It was tricky getting them off and I had a business guy sighing that "people don't know how to travel." Yeah i know i was going slow relative to normal, but those jackets were flying off, usually I pride myself at zipping through Security, I'm always the fastest and never understood people's complaints, Security also thought I had something odd in my bag and kept my a little longer, I got my jackets on and just as I was cleared to go I hear my gates closing, I rush up as they're starting to pull the door closed and they let me through, goddamn I'd never felt so puffed and embarrassed. Thankfully I had the row to myself and could pack all those jackets back in. Fuck Jetstar, they are greedy cunts, my carry on allowance shouldn't change on any flights I've booked as one whole package.
For what it's worth, it's called weight distribution. Know where an imbalanced plane ends up? In a graveyard. If they didn't make sure to evenly distribute luggage, etc, you'd be in for an interesting flight. Same with small prop cesnas.

I do it all the time to avoid charges. I can travel in 3 days worth of layers any day! It goes like this.... Leggings, shorts, jeans.... 2 tank tops, 1 top, sweater! 2 pairs of socks, panties in a pocket! Then I place that sweater in the overhead once I load the plane and my bag under my seat! I disrobe in a restroom when the plane lands. I always carry a foldable grocery sac to disrobe in. Hello low budget flights!!!! I haven't paid for a bag in over a decade.

So for anyone who’s wondering the airlines aren’t being dicks about carry on allowance for no reason. It’s because luggage stored in the overhead has the chance of getting unsecured during turbulence. Getting whacked with a 15kg bag after a free fall can injure people so it’s a liability thing. Multiply that for each passenger and it gets pretty dangerous. There’s also weight and balance that goes into passenger allocation but that’s a different ballgame. Worked my way from ticket agent to loadmaster.

As a ground staff I would say the officer/staff did the right thing. It is actually for a safety reason. In case there is a turbulance for example, the bag that drops will not hurt anyone if the bag is not heavy/hard.

Then she could get in the plane where she took it all off and repacked it. @CLOUD10 the overhead bins can only hold so much weight. It’s like cabinets in your home. They are built to handle so much weight before they can become structurally weaker. Your home as a structure can handle the weight but putting that same weight in the cabinets can cause damage.

Carry on bags are limited in weight so that the weight limits of the overhead bins aren’t exceeded creating a hazardous situation. Some people don’t want to check a bag so they bring an overweight bag as a carry on. The plane can carry the weight but the overhead bins are still limited in the weight they can hold. Too much weight can result in structural failure during turbulent weather events.

When I was returning home from America I had my suitcase which was like 30lbs heavier than the recommended and the lady at check-in had me take out 2 smaller backpacks I had bought and put some clothes in them and the bag I had originally as my carryon was now a checked bag. So I had 2 checked bags and when I was going to check 1 more bag (I had 5 bags in total) she said no because I’m wasting my money i just worked for (I was 19 and was coming from work and travel) so the woman told me to bring all 3 bags onto the plane and let me tell you I was scared until one of the attendants helped me hide the third bag under a blanket I had (she said the cameras are going to pick up I have three bags and I would have to pay for it so I have to hide and she’ll let me on the plane) anyways I ended up takin 3 planes home and all the attendants who saw me with the 3 carry on bags helped me hide the bags so I wouldn’t get charged for it.

I just got back from Arizona, they don’t care how heavy is my carry on. No need to empty it out. Just walk on through they said and speed up the process. LOL
What most people might not realize, is that planes can only hold so much weight. And this guy's bag was obviously too heavy. Let's say it weighed 50lbs. Him and his boys put on the clothes to reduce the weight of the bag. Let's say they took out 20lbs worth of stuff. Then they put on that 20lbs worth of stuff. Despite the weight not being in the bag, it is on them. Meaning they'd be boarding the plane with the same weight they began with. Pretty sure it's not gonna make that big of a difference but the whole point of them checking that stuff is so that you don't overweight the plane. So by doing this, you could overweight the plane. But i bet it's too small of a difference. Not sure. I understand you want to board the plane with all of your stuff, and most people don't think, "oh I might overweight the plane", but still. It can be a problem in some situations. Let's say 20 other people did the same. Now we have a problem. That is a lot of extra weight on the plane. Which could cause some issues.
I always thought it was to do with how much weight the overhead lockers could hold safely. Never had the option to pay for extra carry on weight, I've always had to check it in if it's over.

This was me coming home from London, Ryanair would allow me to go to London with a small suitcase and a backpack but going home the backpack wasn’t allowed. The reason weight is important for carry-on bags are because the overhead compartments can only hold so much weight along with everyone else’s carry on bags.
Yeah but also it’s perfectly fine. They’re not really concerned about the structural integrity of the compartments...it’s about liability of hoisting super heavy bags above everyone’s heads. Just make sure you carry your super heavy bags as though they’re light and it’ll be fine. My camera bags routinely weigh in excess of 50 pounds...nobody cares unless you look like you might drop it.

It’s the weight of the bag going into the overhead bins that would be the issue not the total weight itself.
It seems more of a money thing then an weight issue though why would they let people pay extra to still carry it on if it’s a weight problem.
@CLOUD10 the overhead bins can only hold so much weight. It’s like cabinets in your home. They are built to handle so much weight before they can become structurally weaker. Your home as a structure can handle the weight but putting that same weight in the cabinets can cause damage.

Carry on bags are limited in weight so that the weight limits of the overhead bins aren’t exceeded creating a hazardous situation. Some people don’t want to check a bag so they bring an overweight bag as a carry on. The plane can carry the weight but the overhead bins are still limited in the weight they can hold. Too much weight can result in structural failure during turbulent weather events.

I'm just saying that at least in my Country we hate to tell you to pay just as much as you hate to pay because we either get into a fight with customers or we get chewed by a manager, there's no way out. To be honest we don't worry about the weight of the carry on: as long as it fits the sizer you're free to go. I've even told my passengers many times "just remove some of the stuff and put them in your checked bag, I won't care if it's 5 lbs overweight". This is how much I don't care about customers paying, because I understand it's bs and I have no intention to stress myself to enrich others.

When I was returning home from America I had my suitcase which was like 30lbs heavier than the recommended and the lady at check-in had me take out 2 smaller backpacks I had bought and put some clothes in them and the bag I had originally as my carryon was now a checked bag. So I had 2 checked bags and when I was going to check 1 more bag (I had 5 bags in total) she said no because I’m wasting my money i just worked for (I was 19 and was coming from work and travel) so the woman told me to bring all 3 bags onto the plane and let me tell you I was scared until one of the attendants helped me hide the third bag under a blanket I had (she said the cameras are going to pick up I have three bags and I would have to pay for it so I have to hide and she’ll let me on the plane) anyways I ended up takin 3 planes home and all the attendants who saw me with the 3 carry on bags helped me hide the bags so I wouldn’t get charged for it.

What most people might not realize, is that planes can only hold so much weight. And this guy's bag was obviously too heavy. Let's say it weighed 50lbs. Him and his boys put on the clothes to reduce the weight of the bag. Let's say they took out 20lbs worth of stuff. Then they put on that 20lbs worth of stuff. Despite the weight not being in the bag, it is on them. Meaning they'd be boarding the plane with the same weight they began with. Pretty sure it's not gonna make that big of a difference but the whole point of them checking that stuff is so that you don't overweight the plane. So by doing this, you could overweight the plane. But i bet it's too small of a difference. Not sure. I understand you want to board the plane with all of your stuff, and most people don't think, "oh I might overweight the plane", but still. It can be a problem in some situations. Let's say 20 other people did the same. Now we have a problem. That is a lot of extra weight on the plane. Which could cause some issues.

This was me coming home from London, Ryanair would allow me to go to London with a small suitcase and a backpack but going home the backpack wasn’t allowed. So I put on 15 layers of clothes to fit my backpack in te suitcase. Once I was on the plain I had to take it of Cause I would’ve had a heatstroke otherwise. Oh my, oh my. The lengths I go to save money.

The reason weight is important for carry-on bags are because the overhead compartments can only hold so much weight along with everyone else’s carry on bags.
Yeah but also it’s perfectly fine. They’re not really concerned about the structural integrity of the compartments...it’s about liability of hoisting super heavy bags above everyone’s heads.
Just make sure you carry your super heavy bags as though they’re light and it’ll be fine.
My camera bags routinely weigh in excess of 50 pounds...nobody cares unless you look like you might drop it.

Ever look at carry on dimensions nowadays. They're ridiculous, like 9" height for a bag.
So idiotic when all newer aircraft come with larger bins. All 737s now have sky interior with larger bins. The newer A320 ceo and neo come with larger bins as well. Airlines are aware of this and so am I so I never bother let them tell me my bag is too big.
