    Have you ever seen a Pokemon use a move and think, why did this happen? Well, that was what happened to Austin! Today, he's going to figure out the science of one of Pokemon's weirdest and most deadly moves, Voltorb's self-destruct! Why do something so... self-destructive, instead of something else? Well, it may actually make a lot of sense...

    Entomologist (bug scientist) here! I was really interested with your aphid example. We can see suicidal behaviors in other insects as well. There is a termite that creates a copper compound in its thorax. As the termites age it gets bigger. Front line defense is all the old granny termites to rush over and explode caustic coppery compounds against their adversaries (usually ants)

    What if the Voltorb is actually a layered entity, and the section between the outer, and next layer is the intentionally weakened, and this layer is where the short circuit occurs, this would allow it to actually survive by sacrificing that outer shell to create a reactive armor essentially, and during the the shock from that explosion, the Voltorb makes a high speed getaway. Thus giving the impression that is has blown itself to pieces, but in reality it just exploded its outer shell, and rolled away. This would allow a caught Voltorb to technically not die either and as the games now try to tell us, they "faint" and technically, this would be even smarter than the Aphid strategy, as it would allow the individual to alert the others, and also allow it to survive... And considering how easily they seem to explode... This would actually make more sense than the self-sacrificial model.

      Even make more sense if they shed their outer layer like feathers, furr or scales. Let say their outer layer is a thin sheet of metal, preferably one that's flammable like magnesium. When they short circuit them, all they did was actually connecting their internal batteries to the shell and explode. Should the Voltorb survive it'll just grow a new layer.

    I always thought that Voltorb was originally one of the gastly line that possesed a pokeball, but due to the pokeball being to contain pokemon, it couldn't stop possesing it, and it became a new creature. the explosive nature comes from the gastly line's Gas. many kinds of gas is flamable, especially if it is under pressure. Them using the explosion moves are them building up lots of gas and then sparking it with electricity.

    Well, since your own Pokemon can survive using explode/self-destruct with something as simple as (the presumably medicine contained in) a revive crystal, I suspect that Voltorb actually have 2 layers - one encased in a very strong material where the internal organs are, and a second layer where the grass builds up and the caustic deterrents are stored that is encased in a much weaker (but still strong enough to build up the required gas pressure) casing. That way when the Voltorb explodes, it’s significantly handicapped but still alive, as is shown in-game. This would be closer to the defences of bombardier beetles than the aphids.

    Interestingly, Electrode, the evolved form of Voltorb, is described as "floating aimlessly on the winds" and "volotile to the point it's called the bomb pokemon", indicating Voltorb's evolution has a more powerfull but unstable battery, so rather than congregate the Electrodes spread out. This would protect the group from accidental chain-reactions and deter predators from their home base as any aged Voltorb that evolves will be floating AWAY from the colony at any given time.
    A noble creature to the end. Nature is such a beautiful thing.

    • @starsilverinfinity
      @starsilverinfinity 2 년 전 +2

      Interestingly enough, this extreme instability might be some sort of built-in reproductive mechanism, abit like Creepers from MatPat's Minecraft theory. Another comment suggested that Voltorbs can survive their explosions, using it more like a deterent than a suicide switch and with that in mind it would mean that it would be great for defense but following Creeper reproduction logic, perhaps diffuclt
      Electrode would fix that kink, being excessively unstable so that it can basically go off as hard as possible and spread its children to the wind

    • @xancarter1927
      @xancarter1927 2 년 전 +1

      @@starsilverinfinity I did consider reproduction as a possibility, especially with the volatility in later stages, but reproduction through explosion isn't really viable when the creature is super-heating in a shell and explodes with superheated gas and battery acid, so I dropped the theory.
      Then again, I believe Voltorbs have metal shells, so other inorganic components may exist. Perhaps they release "spore" zygotes like some coral that could potentially have a silicone-based protective coating. IDK.

    Call me a biiiiit of a nitpicker, but I don't think Voltorb completely blows to smithereens. Instead, just like in game and in the anime, it faints is all. Amidst the smoke from the explosion, Voltorbs don't fully break into pieces, instead they just lay there on the floor with the classic swirly eyes is all...
    That's the part that made me raise an eyebrow on this theory since Voltorbs don't die after an explosion, nor are they in pieces. They are perfectly fine, just fainted. Maybe, they release the energy as a pulse, without the shrapnel of its own body?
