I literally watched the video that he was saying he messed up on and got mildly infuriated when he said that none of it mattered bc he did it wrong.

I think it’s for the entertainment values.

He did do it wrong. Different worlds have different values. As well as game mechanics being used to define a worlds value systems. This is just wrong. We have lore from the elder scrolls, witcher, and fallout that tells us roughly what the worlds economy is like. For one its stated that 100 caps is a lot of money, people make a big deal out of it. Based off of the work done for said lore 100 caps puts it at around 1,000 us dollars. Fallout new vegas does the best job out of the modern fallout games to reflect how much caps are worth. As most jobs that would require great amounts of pay in our world nets you a small amount of caps in vegas. That and gambling.
Also austin didnt touch on exactly how value systems work. When someone says compared to a dollar you must take into account just how much the us dollar is really worth. Lets say you buy a lemon in the us for a dollar. Then you go to some third world country and buy a lemon in their dollar. You would notice you are paying way more for a lemon then they are. This is do to the us dollar being worth far more than their currency. So with 1 us dollar you'd than be able to buy 100 lemons in that country. This is how economic systems work. So valuing things off of the currency you use will always be skewed.
All in all he did a good job at valuing in game mechanics. But always remember 2 things, 1 in game mechanics doesn't always reflect the fictional world. 2 the us dollar is worth far more than you think, and as such gives you a false sense of value. Take into account what the us dollar is worth around the world.

He did not account for Minecraft's most obvious mechanic: Building.
Auto harvest farms are a thing that you can create which cut down the time of harvesting a lot. You can also create giant farms using such a method and keep planting until you replant longer than they take to grow.
There could and should have been a lot more math on that front.

His entire premise of "labor is the best standard for wealth" is absolutely ridiculous. Milton Friedman has a great quote on the concept.. If you want to dig a canal, give the workers shovels, if you want to create jobs, give them spoons. Meaning that it's really easy to keep people "working" all day without creating wealth...

There were multiple issues with this video, the most problematic being that an hour’s worth of time for a farm worker varies heavily on a number of factors, not some innate value that an hour’s work has. The costs required to enable that work can detract from pay (especially in today’s world, where there are tractors and gas and whatnot that enable the productivity shown in the video), and their employer has the ability to pay less than their workers’ time’s worth if they want to, so long as it’s not lowered enough to persuade the workers to strike or find work elsewhere. Plus, old subsistence farmers had drastically different business models than today’s for-profit farming companies.
