Well. As a Kirby main I must say, I use him for the flame hammer and swapping charterers. It’s just op in my opinion along with short bursts of flight. I mean ofc he’s popular and also the first fighter in story mode. So he would be more likely for those who played story first.

I'm a 19 year old male living in the Southwest US, of Hispanic descent. My mains are Incineroar, Bowser, and K Rool. I attribute this to, like matpat said, most guys picking a monster, but also the influence of professional wrestling in my culture. Incineroar and bowser have long, cinematic moves that fit into that, and K Rool is a pirate and I love pirates as well

Greninja is probably popular in those countries because of the heavy reliance on Japanese media in comparison to local media. A lot of the kids shows there are regional dubs of anime, a lot of which contains references to ninja (i.e. Naruto, Ninja Hattori-kun). This leads to more of a sense of familiarity with ninja. Furthermore, the reliance on anime also leads to a heavy exposure to Pokémon. These two factors are probably the reason behind Greninja’s popularity.

Makes sense. I'm biologically and self-identified male, but I have behavioral tendencies that are both masculine and feminine. I've been playing SSB since the Gamecube era with Melee, and Link is still one of my favourite characters. Though lately I have been gravitating toward Sephiroth more as a DLC character whose recovery is absolutely amazing because he can ledge hop from his sword.

Honestly as a Filipino, the anime is the exact reason Greninja was popular. He was extremely overhyped. Even people outside the Pokemon community knew who Greninja was because of how overhyped he was. Also the fact that the Pokemon anime aired a lot here and still does, it usually airs after school and is what we'd watch after a long hard day of studying. I know this is super late and you probably already got the answer, but I just wanted to type down my input.
That is true for India too, but they only aired older episodes on tv. Suddenly at that time pokemon xy was aired and everyone was hyped about greninja as he was Ash's pokemon. And kids were into pokemon cards too.
Greninja was already popular in the first place too.

I'd say I follow in a similar category to the Game Theorists, because I like to choose different characters I hadn't played as before... Although, I tend to gravitate my choices towards the more cartoony looking characters than the realistic or grodey ones.

It's small (hard to hit), fast, has a very good projectile, ridiculous combo game, very good recovery, fantastic edgeguarding and multiple reliable methods of taking stocks. If you're unconvinced, watch top Pichu players like Void or RFang, both of whom were at the most recent major tournament, Ultimate Summit 2.

This won’t get noticed but greninja in the pokemon anime alone may be the reason it is so popular in Singapore, India, and the Philippines because greninja is one of Ash’s main Pokémon in the XYZ series.
