That's close to my pet theory, Gaster, Alphys, and Asgore used harvested determination to create the darkner world.
The power of the darkner world was used to create the world of the lighteners with the intention to transfer all the other monsters there. However the energy needed to transfer all the monsters between universes was much higher than just using pieces of Gaster and his determination fortified soul to create copies of everyone. He attempted to retreat back to the underground of UNDERTALE but he melted into the portal walls (created with determination, causing Gaster to almalgemate with it) and evenly distributing him throughout all worlds and the spaces in between them .
The determination used to create the world began to condense and used the power of the shadow wells to create itself a body, Kris. The leftover determination between worlds condensed into two lobes, Sans and Papyrus. Its possible that the determination in the deltarune universe also condensed into two lobes.
Kris is the only human that exists in the deltarune universe, this is because the universe was created as a haven for monsters where there was no chance of humans destroying or locking them away.
Kris feels like an outcast, they (she?) in their soul understand that it is the determination that makes them different from the monsters, so they try to separate themselves from their determination while trying to become a monster themselves.
Also, the darkner world isn't imagination, it's Kris opening portals back to the darkner world by creating to scale "shrines" and using their determination to connect the light and dark worlds.
When entering the supply closet and "falling" into the darkner world, Susie reaches (as if trying to grab something) while Kris simply falls back.

1:05 you cannot believe that the dark world is not a real place now. they DO exist and they DO have effects on the light world, just as much as the light world has effects in the dark one.
2:30 this is a point in chapter 2, where Kris gets his personalized room from Ralsei, he gets an assortment of trophies for himself, directly paralleling the light world version of Kris's room. it's... really neat and feels like that Toby is acknowledging it is different, and that is great in it's own merits.

Chara isn’t evil though. She takes a slightly more optimistic view of Chara than I do- I think Chara may have actually wanted to kill humans when they were alive due to heavy emotional scarring- but JusticeBoy’s “Who Is the True Villain of Undertale?” video covers those bases pretty well.

I read the whole thing and none of that seems even remotely correct. If Chara wanted to commit genocide so bad like the poster implies, then why weren't they killing monsters left and right as soon as they fell down the underground? Why use Frisk to do that when all determined humans have the potential to grow more powerful? Why would a corrupted Chara not care for EXP but accumulated kills when they both are meant for the same purpose: to gain power? And lastly, why would Chara of all people want to fulfill the prophecy? It's really just another person trying to project their guilt onto Chara. The player determines whether or not Chara is a good person. If Chara was truly evil in any way,shape, or form, then we would've seen signs of them being sinister throughout the pacifist route, but we don't. All that person did was nitpick.

To get a bit real here; if I ever made my own video game that did as well as Undertale, I too probably would “wake up in the middle of the night, not being able to go back to sleep,” at least more than I usually do. Because, think about it, mostly everyone would who played your game now probably puts you on a platform, a platform higher than others. They expect so much out of you, (Or you may think they do) and as Toby said, “I don’t think I can make you feel “that way,” again” because Undertale was pretty much a sleeper hit, it came out of nowhere. So I understand Toby, and I hope after reading this you do as well.

Toby seems like a decent person. I hope no matter what people take from this game he knows he's loved and is able to love himself more knowing all the good he's done.

It's been so long since I've gone into one of your games battles and known I was screwed right after the first attack.

I think that personally, both the Gaster-Toby Connection and the Kris-Toby connection could also be two sides of the same coin. When one creates a story, it often involves creating a world. You essentially become "The God of This World" and have complete control over it and all other canonical versions of that world, this would be the Gaster angle. As a story teller, exploring the different avenues and routes that can come with creating an entire world. But then, as a story teller, you must be careful not to let your story consume you. Many story tellers, especially with dedicated fan bases feel immense pressure to satisfy their fans and create the perfect story over and over again. This can often lead to sleepless nights, poor health, and in essence, ripping one's own soul out. I think that Toby Fox is writing his stories in parallel. This is of course, fairly obvious because he's created two games that are, themselves, parallel worlds, with parallel and opposite themes. The thing is, if the Gaster-Toby Connection and the Kris-Toby Connection are also a dichotomy, you might consider this fact. The G-T connection is a representation of how Toby felt creating Undertale. Everyone loved it, obsessed over it. He was the God of that world, the person who created the perhaps, not perfect in execution, but perfect in concept and reception, game, first try. But he wanted to do it again. However, he felt immense pressure when looking to create a new game. This pressure ate him alive, the feeling of not being good enough, the feeling of being a one trick pony. He continued to work however, building the dichotomy of his feelings as the creator of a world, as he built Deltarune. He put emphasis on a much more grand and impressive execution, but with less in the way of concept, and also in reception, which he expected and appears to have come to terms with. The game is far more beautiful and impressive in its art, music, and character writing (don't @ me, this is for the sake of explanation), but it was far less impressive in its concept, since the game is, of course, incomplete. The game Deltarune, unlike Undertale, which is a full game, doesn't have enough time to fully explore its mirror concept and idea of "your choices don't matter". I'm sure this will eventually change as the entire game is released, but as a writer, myself, I can totally understand the fear that what you create won't be good enough. Maybe I'm just looking too far into Toby's own creative struggle that may have made its way into the games, but it just seems like too much of an idea to pass up.

thats a solid theory, and i think one thats kind of pervaded amongst the Undertale community. thing is, thats more of a conceptual theory, whereas Matpat is trying to provide a narrative/lore-based theory. this theory and Matt’s aren’t mutually exclusive, they can both be true. its just that yours is more meta, while Matt’s is a more in-universe explanation.

@@aquarius6139 Gaster might be a reflection of how Toby felt making Undertale, while Kris might be a reflection of how Toby felt making Deltarune after the success that was Undertale. Extreme TLDR, but generally what is being said.
I quite like the idea of Deltarune being in the Kris-Asriel situation- shadowed by the brother. I disagree with both of these theories, but only because I believe that Kris being in Asriel’s shadow/ Deltarune being in Undertale’s shadow symbolises Toby’s anxiety for living up to expectations. I definitely understand Toby when he states that he wakes up in the middle of the night unable to go back to sleep again. He’s definitely gotten the rockier path when it comes to the expression of creativity: creating a masterpiece on the first try.
Usually, people start at the bottom and make their way up, building a history on their project/journey. Toby, and surely many others, have gotten the opposite: skipping the journey and creating something of high quality on the first try. Bear with me here. To make something where no one can give you (enough) criticism to make the next project even better, is definitely going to mess you up mentally if you wanna be the very best. Hell, I also think Toby separated Deltarune into chapters to see how well received chapter 1 was going to be, as a reassurance to keep going.
Deltarune is an alternate universe for Undertale, not a sequel. Toby should be very proud of this decision. He now has a wide variety of options to work with, and seeing that he added a “dark world” and “light world” instead of keeping it the same with a “monster world” and “surface world”, he knows that this was a smart and safe decision in terms of catering to expectations.
Toby has a very creative mind and I think the next few chapters of Deltarune will be very, very interesting.

I honestly think different about this matter. It does reflect Toby's anxiety... but I feel upcoming chapters are up for some bloody plot twists. Like, c'mon, Kris just ripped off his own SOUL (represents the player, maybe?) and he/she looks VERY alike to chara... so I wouldn't be surprised if toby gets us with a darker plot at some point

I feel like Undertale is the real version where you’re in it and have to fight or befriend monsters. Since it’s the older brothers world, and he’s considered better. Then Deltarune is the imaginary version because the younger brother is always in his brother’s shadows and can’t create anything better. That’s why when they come back to reality they’re playing in a room with toys and school supplies. But in Undertale you don’t come back to reality because you’re already living in it. (I hope that makes sense if not then idk how else to explain it.)
If you consider that asriel goes away to college and 'lives the life' while kriss stays in the home town imitating an exciting life, i think your theory sounds even more interesting

Toby's always been pretty clever with his themes and stuff, so I definitely could see this connection. It's like he's telling two stories, one of Gaster, who intrinsically fits in the Underverse, and one of himself, putting in little motifs and such to shine a light on his own feelings.
The fact that he can show this in little ways is super inspiring. I've often felt similar to him in a creative way, ESPECIALLY his "I really want to show you what I've been thinking about" bit. I've always felt that way too and I often fantasize about worlds in my own head too, stories I've thought of and characters I've created.
It's almost... cathartic?
To see someone out there with a similar feeling. Sure, with as many people alive today, you're bound to meet someone that's like you, but up until now, I've never really identified that feeling in someone else.

Kris is the Toby’s interpretation of himself, a symbol rather. Gaster is Toby’s avatar.
What if Kris is not Toby Fox, but the creator’s interpretation of himself? Sometimes writers create the protagonist with values they possess plus what they fantasize and want in life. And with this context, Toby Fox created Kris.
And Gaster is Toby Fox. Fox wouldn’t want to mess-up his longtime theorized character by making Gaster the protagonist of a new game. It would just kill the craze. Toby Fox obviously is the one who made the game-using Gaster as the avatar.
I don't like the theory that Gaster is Toby's avatar. Mainly because the annoying dog is very clearly his avatar.

I think both theories can be configured into one, actually showing GASTERS life instead of Toby because you said how Toby can show Gastet, but also our beloved character. You never said anything about him being *both* showing parts of his life but still trying his best to make us dig deeper in the story to find his way to make his story.

So after watching both videos, you say both Kris and Gaster can represent Toby. Let's take this further. I won't take credit for finding this, but someone has noticed that in the intro of Deltarune's survey- there are actually two voices speaking to the player. One voice is thought to be Gaster using the capital letters (like the tweets), and the other is thought to be Chara with the lowercase. In the Japanese version, the voice that is thought to be Chara uses kanji in the same way Chara does in a genocide run- as kanji is hardly used in Undertale at all.
So what if it's both? Chara and Gaster are connected, and Kris shares several similarities with Chara to the point where I suspect they might even be a version of 'Chara' (Same adoptive family, knife, shirt, etc). Choice at the end of a Genocide run and in Deltarune makes no difference. Also, that machine that keeps showing up in the Gaster video has a soul- shaped object inside. A red one like Chara was suspected to have. Did their soul actually disappear Asriel was killed? Or was it used in an experiment? To me, at least, it looks like that machine has a face with glowing red eyes and a cracked face.

Kanji is actually used in all of Deltarune. Well, in the dark world atleast. So I'm not too sure how much credibility that has now.

That's a crazy cool connection. I think the comment that Kanji is used in deltarune and the fact that deltarune is lowercase while UNDERTALE is capitalized only further solidifies Matpat's theories and the idea that there are connections between Toby + Kris/Gaster.
deltarune is Chara's/Kris's world where they take Susie for catharsis while UNDERTALE is the big showy original game with all the accolades.
Definitely think somethings there where UNDERTALE represents Gaster and deltarune represents Kris/Chara, thanks for pointing out the kanji connection!
Trix that's really interesting! Maybe if Chara/Kris really made the dark world, it uses part of their speech? It's one of many possible reasons anyway.

Recently after chapter 2 came out I had a theory that deltarune is an exploration of how toby feels about the spinoffs and “AU’s” made by fans. Where the dark world being a base for characters is just like the base game of undertale and that the cyberworld was a remake of undertale just changed a bit. After watching this I see that it could work into this theory pretty well. About how he feels about the process of making the game, fan remakes and now with the smiling head being the media around it. And the end of chapter 1 being toby saying that he is in charge of this game to show us how he feels. And that us playing it is just like a movie through his eyes.
MATPAT please make a theory on the end of chapter 2, where Kris RIPS HIS HEART OUT and PUTS IT BACK and then he proceeds to RIP IT OUT AGAIN AND PUT IT BACK. Then the final scene with the knife and the smoke and the tv. It's all very confising and i'd like to see what it means.

I found the deep voice quite hard to understand sometimes. Maybe you could create subtitles because the automatic subtitle generator doesn't seem to understand all of it either. 😜

I would love if actual subtitles were added to every theory. I have adhd (and a plethora of other disorders) and have trouble concentrating on his voice without being about to read along. I'm always repeating parts of the video because my brain just doesn't process the audio fast enough. So a 15 minutes video will take me about 25 minutes to finish because I can't follow along.
@@meowntown69 It often takes me double the length of the video too (or more). But mostly because I get distracted by the internet or my phone because I research something in the video for 10 minutes. And then I find out how much time I wasted and that I could have watched another video in the meantime and also would be more immersed without distractions...

It’s kinda weird that watching a video would be boring since screens provide dopamine (the happiness neurotransmitter that someone with ADHD has less of than average) and your brain really wants dopamine since it’s lacking in quantity.

Top ten anime plot twists
This idea of it being a story about game creation made me think about the ending of the first chapter. That could be representative of how game makers might feel when insistent fans or outside sources (ie companies, politicians, etc) try to force ideas and choices on them. Just like it's not the players right to make choices in the game, it's not the fan or outsiders right to make choicse on how the game maker designs the game.

I wonder if Kris just wants to get rid of his humanity by pulling out his heart. As you said, it represents the soul of a human being, right? If that is true it is just another prove that the player can´t use "determination" to change the fate of this story at all. But does it make Kris a monster then? He basically got rid of the thing that makes humans different from monsters. (well except look wise obviously)
You should watch the other Deltarune theories. MatPat says that it's probably Kris rejecting the player, as you can still move the soul when it's in the cage.

Hey, so i was at this building where you can play games, called House Of Nerds. Me and my friends where eating and sat down in a sofa with an old Nintendo and a TV. There was a game you could play, but i don't know what the game is called. It's very close to deltarune, too close. The protagonist looks like ralsei, he has a hat simular to ralsei, and a long coat or whatever it is. In this game you are in a group of four, you are called the light warriors. You can run into monsters and you need to fight them. You can choose between "fight", "magic" and more. It is pixelated
Now this is an old game and i have not seen it before, i just couldnt stop thinking about it...

Remember. The game is about games and game makers. It was inspired by the old Earthbound series and games of that ilk. It makes sense for Toby to use character designs that hearken back to the look and themes of those games. These games are about who Toby is and those old games are very much a part of who he is.
Chapter 2 is out now and oh boy it is good.
