    Powerwash Simulator was an unexpected hit. Not that the game isn't fun, it is, but it is also so much more than that. The game is SATISFYING. You know, in that way that your brain kind of zones out and just... enjoys the ride. Why is that? What makes a game, like Powerwash Simulator, so satisfying to play? Today Austin is going to try and answer that question while I go rewatch all of Markiplier's playthrough videos again...

    Alright: For years, I have wondered why I love the game Death Stranding so much. Like for all intents and purposes, Death Stranding is nothing more than a walking simulator. But I realize it for me at least is in the perfect flow. It meets all the criteria. You get immediate feedback after delivering each order, with usually a good grade because it is hard to mess up. You get a sense of progress as you literally move packages across the landscape and reconnect cities together, and the NPCs often tell you repeatedly how grateful they are and how helpful you are. You also get rewarded with level ups and titles after every delivery, no matter how small, and occasionally unlock new gear.

From the moment a player spawns and until they die the action should always be pushing the player to naturally flow through the level. A player should never have be standing still. They should always be engaging with SOMETHING in the level. Whether that be fighting other players, weapon pickups, or navigating/using the maps geometry to achieve a goal. Just a fun fact I guess lol

    This sounds like what neurodivergent people experience, like hyperfocus for ADHD and ASD individuals as well: maybe it's just rarer for a neurotypicals to experience this "flow state"?
    I don't know what hyperfocus feels like, at least I don't think so, so I'm not a spokesperson, just some kid that noticed a similarity. And Mark does have ADHD so that could've added to his experience.

      I was about to comment myself but as someone with adhd, video games in general can cause flow easier than most tasks. People with adhd have a deficit of dopamine so when someone's brain goes into flow the brain shuts out everything to focus on it due to the deficit they have. Hope that makes sense

      @@PaganWanderer072 I actually experienced that when I was "younger" (like a couple years ago plus I haven't gamed in a while) and know that, but I didn't know the specifics! Regardless, thanks, and literally because of this, I'm hoping I can get a test for both ASD and ADHD.

      @@Vesperad0 usually when someone states 'maybe I'm just a lazy cuck' I would also say that's totally a adhd thing. I used to hear I was lazy all the time and like no one understood that when I told them I wasn't forgetting to clean but that the thought wasn't even in my head in the first place. To someone watching me it did look lazy but it was something internal neither I nor the observer were aware of. I only learned I was adhd like 2 years ago and I'm turning 29 this year. Would've salvaged some self esteem if I had known about this as a kid.

    • @some-one-else
      @some-one-else 2 년 전 +7

      @@Vesperad0 I used to think I was lazy as well until someone pointed out to me that laziness is an active choice that you enjoy. It's not the same thing as the inexplicable inability to get things done, procrastination, or a lack of motivation. Laziness is when you choose to do nothing that day because you want to relax, not when you have a thousand things to do and you can't figure out why it's 7 pm and you still haven't done anything.
      This is actually what got me down the path of figuring out I had ADHD. Trying to figure out what was causing my "laziness" led me to researching symptoms and eventually figuring out ADHD was the likely culprit. Then I went to get a diagnosis.
      The assumption that lack of productivity is a moral failing caused by laziness that can just shows that you don't really want to be productive is an incredibly harmful assumption for neurodivergent people and often prevents them from getting diagnosed. Try not to blame yourself, if you are genuinely trying and you can't seem to get things done, that's a sign that it's not your fault.

    I _believe_ that because I have adhd, my ‘sense of flow’ is more difficult to accomplish, because those with adhd have lower dopamine levels than those who don’t have adhd. So we would need more immediate feedback and a more engaging process than doing the same thing over and over. It’s the repetition of this game that demotivates me from playing it and watching others play it.

The sound along with her beautiful handwriting gave me those tingles. I experience the same thing watching people draw or paint. Sound or video alone is not enough, it must be both for me to experience it.

    Another thing about Powerwash Sim is how a clean environment or object is pretty much universally more enjoyable to watch than a grimy one.
