The experiment was set up in a small room with one-way glass so the researchers could observe without interfering and consisted of 8 stages that lasted around 3 minutes each:
1. Mother, baby, and experimenter together (lasts less than a minute)
2. Mother and baby
3. Stranger joins mother and baby
4. Mother leaves, stranger and baby alone
5. Mother returns, stranger leaves (first reunion)
6. Mother leaves, baby is alone
7. Stranger returns
8. Mother returns and stranger leaves (second reunion)
The attachment style was determined based on four behaviors towards the mother during the reunions (proximity and contact seeking, contact maintaining, avoidance of proximity and contact, and resistance to contact and comforting). The behaviors were scored from 1-7 based on intensity. There were three main attachment styles identified:
Secure (type B, 70% of infants), insecure resistant (type C, 15%) and insecure avoidant (type A, 15%). You can look into these further to find more information. Mary concluded that attachment style was influenced by the mother's behavior towards the baby. If the mother is sensitive and responsive to the baby's needs and provides consistent care, the baby develops secure attachment. Insecure resistant occurs if the mother provides inconsistent care (sometimes the baby's needs are met and sometimes they aren't), and insecure avoidant develops if the mother does not meet the baby's needs. These attachment styles also influence how the baby will grow up and feel about/act in relationships. Like I noticed in one video Paul walks around a tire a specific way to get the house open. In another scene he is talking to Marvin in a field and it looks like he is walking in those same random directions.
