I'm on my third run of the game. Trying to get all the collectables before Arthur dies and I turn into a blubbering, crying mess...because let's face it...you grow to love this man and feel sadness when he dies.

When the game was introduced and learned we wouldn't be playing as John, I was like there is no other like John. Boy was I and everyone I know wrong. We ended up loving Arthur more than John and made me appreciate John even more

I do like the way Arthur died. Most video game characters die in heroic ways and they seem invincible until their death but rockstar made Arthur even more realistic by dying of natural causes. That is one of the many reasons he is my favourite protagonist of any media

While I would generally agree with you, the BCG vaccine (aka TB vaccine) is actually not that great at preventing TB. The United States does not use this vaccine because we employ methods for screening for TB.
While maybe not specifically tuberculosis, vaccines prevent illnesses in general.

I did notice Arthur's change in my game! Recently I've gotten to chapter 6 and was diagnosed, and suddenly, I got a lot of options I didn't have before. Giving people money, refusing payment, random acts of good? It's a piece of his character development that I really admire, and it makes me sad to know he'll be dying soon.
I noticed it when he was in Lagasse, in the swamp Pinkerton shootout, I thought it was the lighting. I thought he got it in guarma.

It's okay to feel sad for Arthur. As Trelawney says, "We're the architects of our own good fortune." In Arthur's case, he lived a rough life inconsistent with surviving a disease like tuberculosis. In some ways he was an architect of his own demise.

Yes a half a year regiment of four different antibiotics...though luckily the chance of TB becoming active after being infected is about 10 percent for healthy people and even higher for those with compromised immune systems and most people get even sicker from the disease because they stop taking the medicine half way through because they think just because they feel fine the bacteria must be gone

When I was about 14-16, my mother and I contracted TB. But we were lucky enough to have been found with it very very early. We were both medicated then the disease eradicated once our 9 month medication period was done. Scary to think my mother and I could have ended up like our boah Mr. Morgan

Hey, Austin, thanks for making this video. I'm a health care worker that contracted TB from one of our patients, luckily they caught it while it's still latent, and I'm undergoing treatment for it, but it could have turned out much worse. Like you, I had no idea it was this prevalent and this deadly still, and I honestly thought it had mostly been eradicated. Boy, was I wrong. Anyway, thanks for the exposure, I hope it helps someone out there less fortunate than me. And I encourage everyone to get tested for TB, it's only a pin prick, but it could save you down the line.
@@don1041 they can pretty reliability tell if you have ever been exposed, but for a diagnosis a sputum sample is needed.

@@don1041 So when they diagnosed me, they gave me what's called a "PPD" test, where they basically take a small syringe filled with a solution and inject it under your skin to create a small bump. After 24-48 hours, they will check the size of the bump and if it's larger than 10cm, they sent me to the lab to get a "Quantiferon Gold Test", basically blood work that confirmed I had TB. After that, I was sent to get a chest x-ray to see if my lungs were affected, which they luckily weren't. That's where we determined it was latent. I didn't have to cough into anything, it was mostly blood work that confirmed it. Sorry I can't help more, man. I hope you can get it figured out! If it helps, I was told symptoms mostly manifest as unexplained weight loss, night sweats, or, like you said, coughing that won't go away. I'd be optimistic and say if you didn't have those other symptoms, you're probably safe, but I would see if I could find another health care provider that's willing to try a PPD.

I live in Ireland and when I was in 6th class I was supposed to get the BCG vaccine, which covers TB.
However, they've been out of it in Europe for the last four years.
TB is coming back to Europe. There's a whole generation that aren't vaccinated.
The vaccine is not that great at preventing the disease in the first place. So even those that are vaccinated are still at risk. It's part of the reason why the United States doesn't utilize the vaccine.
Antivaxxers scare me in so many ways, firstly they bring diseases; they are so ignorant about it and just their general rudeness towards people and hatred of autistics appals me.

Tuberculosis is terrifying. My father had it as a teenager and he describes it as the single most terrifying thing that has ever happened to him. When I had pneumonia a few years back he was so relieved that it wasn’t TB I thought he was going to cry.
Only thing and I mean I know we don’t know enough in game for it but a parent/sibling having TB is also a red flag for it. If a close relative is susceptible, you maybe susceptible due to shared genes.

Pair that with the fact that people do NOT follow their medication schedule, thereby increasing the drug resistance of bacteria.
The short of it is, when a doctor says "finish your medication through 7 days" you FINISH that medication in 7 days. Why?
It takes 5 days to weaken the bacteria to a state that it doesnt show symptoms. Its there, its just too weak to effect a symptom. Its those final few days ofmedication that most people stop taking their antibiotics, giving the bacteria time to recuperate and grow immune.
Antibiotic comes in levels. A bacteria grows immune? You give a higher, stronger level of antibiotics. This here is the problem. Most people keep repeating the cycle of not finishing their medication, thereby making the bacteria stronger. whats bad then is that at a certain point *the bacteria can grow immune to THE STRONGEST antibiotic known to man*
See the problem here? Just by not finishing their medication *THEY'RE CULTIVATING BACTERIA THATS IMMUNE TO EVERY ANTIBIOTIC IN THE WHOLE WORLD* at that point its called a "super bug" and theres litterally *NO HOPE FOR SURVIVAL*
Think I'm exaggerating? *2 million* people have died to bacteria superbugs each year in the US alone.
Tl:dr, listen to your doctor when he says take your antibiotics under a certain amount of days

I’ve known about tuberculosis for years, ever since I first watched Tombstone and watched some documentaries about the real history behind it. I remember when I was first playing through Rdr2 and Arthur was starting to cough frequently, I thought, “It sounds like he’s starting to contract tuberculosis, but surely Rockstar wouldn’t put desease contraction as a possibility in their games” but when Arthur fell off his horse in the streets of Saint Denis, I knew it was over...
You know theres more than 1 cough to contract lol how did you instantly know it was tb? Because its a western?

One thing I was thinking of when Austin talked about the antibiotic resistant strands of TB was, "What if we used bacteriophages?" They're like homering missiles that dont harm our cells, they can only harm a certain type of bacteria (like TB) and antibiotic resistant strands of said bacteria trade their resistance to phages for resistance to antibiotics, so once they become resistant to phages, we can hit them with antibiotics because they've lost the resistance to them.
Do you know what struck me? A random line during a stranger encounter during the epilogue where John says "Me? I can't even read, never really learned it." Throughout the game, we see Arthur scribbling, quoting books and journaling in a time when people being "learned" was highly uncommon. Dutch and Hosea adopted Arthur at age fourteen, meaning in his previous life he was from a family, if not of means, then of intelligence to some degree. This means if Dutch hadn't forced him down this path in life, he could have been someone better. It's a tragedy all around.
Long story short: Vaccinate properly. No it's not going to cause pretty much any of the conditions *some people* claim it will. At worst, you'll have some itching at the injection site.

My grandmother had Tuberculosis and was from a relatively rich family. Her younger brother died of it and it was quite commonly considered a death sentence
, especially in the young. She was placed in quarantine and later had a surgery that collapsed a portion of her lung, isolating the disease and sparing her life. It was nothing short of a miracle and as soon as she recovered, she became a nurse to help others with tuberculosis. She lived to be 90 years old with only 2 3rds of her lungs functioning. Also this was in Japan around world war 2 so I am not sure what the treatments were in comparison with the rest of the world. Thanks Austin for this very educational video. I had no idea TB was affecting so many still.

And I wish many people would consider the great work that was done in medicine between the great wars and the 80's. Especially in the Anti-Vax climate... just think if no TB vaccination was here and the sickness came back by tourism. Quarantine would be the least measure they'd suffer.

In South Africa every second muti seller claims to be either a doctor or professor capable of curing hiv, tb and any real/mythical disease so it’s no wonder so few people finish thier government paid for treatment. I remember that tb was discussed in every health class since the first grade. The disease made its way into the buffalo in the Kruger national park and wound up putting the lion population in serious trouble. The buffalo in private reserves are clean now but our national parks just have it barely under control.
And it's not like Mbeki bordered on genocidal by publicly denying AIDS and praising muti...

Yup, in every single Life orientation class we had a semester where TB and AIDS were the main topic.
Doc Holiday is the way I originally learned about Tb and the fact that colorado had a lot of Tb clininc because of it semi arid climate.
Also vaccines are one of the greatest life saving tools ever created
