I find this quite ironic because a I felt like a lack of any real progression from game to game was one of the reasons I didn't care to play Fortnite for more than one or two games. Unlocking a different skin isn't even close to comparable with the feeling of progress I got from unlocking a new gun on games such as BF3, for example.

Well that's because everyone seeks something different and thus their sense of progression is different. For example I actually like the BF campaigns but don't like that much the multi-player and thus I find a bigger sense of progression completing the history than rather grinding my way to newer weapons or so. And this is something game designers need to know to improve the experience of their games, so knowing what you are offering, you know what kind of audience you are going to have and then what they expect.

What made Fortnite so popular was the 'Loss Disguised as a Win' mechanic which is how actual casinos make all their profit. When you lose a match, you still get experience points and the idea that you survived longer than other players. You lost but you felt like you won something in the process. Since the majority of the player base won't win matches most of the time, it gives that majority positive reinforcement to keep playing the game since they still performed better than other players.

I stopped playing games where there were tons of rewards and side quests. That if I had a full time job playing just that game, I would never complete everything. Im a completioniest. And this game design ultimately frustrated me. I want to be able to BEAT a game 100%. Not worry about finishing all my dailies everyday.

Agree 100%. Said this to my friends the other day when I saw destiny 2 coming out free. "I think the only downside to MMOs in my mind is there is often no end to content xD You can never put a game down and think 'Now I've done everything'". It can be seen as both a good and a bad thing though. Many people don't like the end of a story, so for them it's a good thing. For others like us, it's a bad thing.
