DIY Silver Surfer Surfboard goes SUPER FAST!

Curious about how Power (kW or HP) is measured and compared? Power is the amount of work a motor or engine can do. This is why people compare vehicles HP with other vehicles HP!
Power is a factor of both torque and RPM, which means you can have a low speed car with big torque, or a high speed car with little torque, even though both cars have the same HP!
The equation is KW = (Torque[Nm]×RPM) / 9565
In our case, because our motor powers a jet pump, it has fairly low speed of a few thousand RPM but lots of torque to move water. One more thing makes it tricky! Electric motors are sometimes quoted for their INPUT power, but an electric motor is only 80-95% energy efficient, which means the output power is less 5-20% less the input power.

Hey man, just build what you want. It doesn't need to be from a movie or comic, it just needs to be cool!

If you need it to “fly” just use a hydrofoil and set up the motor at the bottom of the foil. Even if your not fully airborne you’ll feel like your flying, plus you’ll have less resistance on the water and will end up going faster.

Aqualisa power showers (pretty much any power shower) work on the same set up, admittedly a smaller version but still a motor, impeller and an outlet, but a handy reference point for anyone trying to get their head around the system

Dude, loved the video! Absolutely awesome board as well! You should really make a motorized hydrofoil board, you would kind of "fly" above the water. Besides, because of the low drag on the wing, you would go a LOT faster and the range would also be a lot longer!

What a great project guys. IMO - Gonna need to introduce a water pickup port/tubing setup to cool those batteries and maybe motor too since that sealed compartment has near zero cooling ability atm and inevitably heat buildup will win even with more batteries.. Also addressing the main water inlet port fluid dynamics resistance (especially at high knots) whould gain a little more top end too. Keep up the excellent work!

Great job! Hydrofoil would have been a cool addition and would have made it exponentially faster without all the drag, but also quite a bit tougher to build. Seems like 30HP would have been way more power than that and required a lot larger power cable...

I laughed when you attached the front cleat for your handle and especially the rear ones for towing, as I did the same things to my original Jetboard! (Had the orange/red one.) This was in the 70's, a local machine shop had several dozen NOS Jetboards for sale when the manufacturer shut down. They could pull most anything, I found. Much slower than your version, but a stately 8-10 knots. My best moment was getting heckled by a couple guys with a Jet-ski 'cause my board was so slow. Buuuttt. About an hour later, they're stalled out in the lake, trying to push it back to shore. Pulled up beside them and offered a tow. Got them back to shore, and some respect, too.. Good times. Electric is the way to go, tho... Fun video! Enjoy! Stu

at 8:40 using rivnuts might have made the job easier by allowing you to secure the anchor point from 1 side. Although there could be a reason that wouldn’t work that I’m not seeing. Anyway great build as always!!
