This is the closest anyone has ever gotten to a proper functional lightsaber, obviously there’s still ways to improve it to make it 100% authentic but still, this is incredibly impressive
Give it time and we will use them on mars
Seems the biggest issue still is storing large amounts of energy in a small volume, which keeps this from being a truly "handheld" device. It's cool that they were able to replicate the plasma.

This is incredible. I wouldn't think it operates the way a fictional light saber does in terms of acting like a solid, but this is still very cool.

Sadly physics doesn't allow for the instantenous transfer of heat. A 'real' lightsaber would also have an order of magnitude greater energy output, the energy required to cut through a blastboord instantenously like that is absolutely incredible, and way more than we could supply without using explosives.

@@Lucas-rz3vl I think the main problem isn't the lack of heat, but the lightsaber not being solid. You wouldn't have to melt the door entirely to poke it through.

1990 was only 30 years ago. By the fictional “flying car” was out of the question due to, well, obvious physics issues. So 1950-1960 would be a better year to state................ (☞ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)☞
This is probably the most accurate fictional weapon made. There was actually a lightsaber attached to a backpack like this. The girl who made it couldn’t make a regular lightsaber so she made an invention just like this. I don’t know if they intended on basing it off of it but it’s still pretty cool.
I have an idea for a lightsaber that can move quickly and deflect blaster bolts. Make the retractable stuff like in the toys, but out of tungsten and have the plasma go around it at each point where it extends from the hilt. That way the blade will stay one length while you swing it around. It should also be able to cut things more quickly.

It may be possible to make a plasma sword with a material blade made of a refractory metal, such as tungsten, and lower the temperature of the plasma. So that the plasma simply makes the metal soft, and cuts the already folding tungsten blade. This would speed up the cutting of doors, and would also make it possible to make excellent toasts)
In addition, such a blade is easier to control
This lightsaber is pretty amazing. It would benefit from more power though. Try using illuminated anti-matter held in a magnetic field projected by the saber handle. This is how the ones in Starwars work and that's why they're so small and powerful.

@Hector Lewis It isn't about how fast you get in, it's about how much they wet themselves when they see the lock melting(close the second door) only to realize they're still getting through.
in all seriousness though, yeah law enforcement is about speed and efficiency so they probably wont ever use such devices but boy would it intimidate, especially if cops had force and/or psi abilities.

In star wars the bullets and I think the light sabers are held to gather by magnets and stuff, making it cut more efficiently. You might be able to make it cut faster with a sort of super heated retractable rod in the middle.

what I'm most curious about is how it would be realistically feasible for the "blade" to (a) not waver when you swing it (b) not exude heat when held close to the face, or damaging light to the naked eye (c) not "break" when making contact with other objects
this isn't a critique of course, what you've made is phenomenal. I'm just intensely curious; I've spent days researching this subject for a sci-fi story I'm writing, and I was torn between the use of plasma and ionic power. of course, it's sci-FI for a reason, but still..
So, for that to turn into something close to an actual lightsaber we'll probably need a very potent energy source and a way to give form to the plasma with electromagnetic fields. We'll need something more efficient to replace the fuel for, of course.

i havnt looked for any later aditions for this yet but if i remember right part of the tech for the lightsaber is a magnetic field containment for the beam so i think that might have a slight effect on how an actual lightsaber would function, plus if im not mistaken then the energy should be focused through an apropriate focusing crystal.... all in all as far as im aware a good first attempt at a lightsaber... id imagine that the magnectic fields may be somehow calibrated to absorb and reuse the heat for energy somehow? thats what id try to do.

It a plasma cutter... been using them in the Steel industry for years...... just a custom nozzle that shoot the plasma out further....
