Commenting on the prize, Stewart said, “I am truly honored to receive this award. I have long admired and been influenced by the work of Mark Twain, or, as he was known by his given name, Samuel Leibowitz.”
“For more than three decades, Jon Stewart has brightened our lives and challenged our minds as he delivers current events and social satire with his trademark wit and wisdom. For me, tuning into his television programs over the years has always been equal parts entertainment and truth”
    - Deborah F. Rutter, Kennedy Center President
The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor recognizes individuals who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th-century novelist and essayist Samuel Clemens, best known as Mark Twain. As a social commentator, satirist, and creator of characters, Clemens was a fearless observer of society, who startled many while delighting and informing many more with his uncompromising perspective on social injustice and personal folly.
As a recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, Stewart received a copy of an 1884 bronze portrait bust of Mark Twain sculpted by Karl Gerhardt (1853-1940). Previous recipients can be seen by scrolling down this page.
Capital One® is the Presenting Sponsor of this year’s Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor as part of the bank’s three-year, $3 million gift to fund Comedy at the Kennedy Center, a signature program at the Center focused on elevating comedy as an art form and uniting the community through laughter.
The 23rd Mark Twain Prize for American Humor is under the direction of the creative team from Done + Dusted, the Kennedy Center’s producing partner for the Mark Twain Prize since 2018. This year’s ceremony marks the 23rd year that the Kennedy Center’s marquee comedy award will be broadcast nationally.
The event was created by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Bob Kaminsky, Peter Kaminsky, Mark Krantz, and John Schreiber. The Kennedy Center is grateful to Cappy McGarr for his steadfast support of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor since its inception in 1998.

@@PapagenoMF Idk about that. Dave does hour long comedy standup sets just freestyle on the regular. He's the best in the world at what he does and it isn't unbeleivable that he free styled this speech. I imagine he atleast had a few bullet points written down about subjects he wants to touch on. However, I do beleive the speech was improvised.

Dave Chappelle is one of the most eloquent people to ever hold a mic. I can attest to Jon Stewart's kindness. I get a Wish from Make-A-Wish when I was 16. Jon's humor helped me get through chemo and radiation for two brain tumors. So, I wanted to see a taping of The Daily Show and thank him for making me laugh during the darkest time of my life. My whole family got to meet him in a green room after the show. It was surreal. My sister got a hug from him because she was the only person shorter then him in my family. My point is, I could feel the quality of Jon's character, which Chappelle so eloquently described. And, I have the utmost respect for both of those comedians.

I remember a time, not so long ago, that the majority of humans had some sort of moral compass and a smidgen of common sense. How these people are DEMONISED for speaking truth, when we should all aim to be straight up.
It is a great thing when someone stands up not for themselves, but for others.
Jon and Dave, John Oliver, Colbert... it's how the ones losing their minds at the tate if the world, get their REAL news, and it's with a joke and a smile, so it doesn't hut so hard.
Satire is there to poke fun at people, but never maliciously, unless, they absolutely warrant it. And Jon's speech to Congress over the 911 funding not being extended at least, you're spot on. These people give you goosebumps. And I have started finding old school politicians, attractive, because of their POLICIES!!!!
My last relationship, in both senses of the word, I finished it because he was an absolute airhead!! Hahaha. Comments like yours, and many others here, give the rest of us hope, that sanity is still a thing.
What happened here, with the RNLI, a volunteer coast guard, rescuing refugees near drowning, and they got a torrent of abuse, from people telling them they shouldn't be wasting THEIR FREE TIME... to save refugees, first from war, and now, an earthquake.
These people are poor, because we stoke their resources and raped and pillaged.
We ALL need to step up, as one.
      Hollywood is all BS
If they gave a shit they'd donate and not fund raise...
So. In summary, sorry , but Jon is a great guy. And the video is playing in the background...
      More of this. In unison.
Because the world is in trouble.
And we need to start treating people as flesh and blood, not economically

I think the problem with woke, is that it's the same with incredibly conservative comedy, and it lacks any sort of self awareness. Dave Chappelle can put a lens on his life and just earnestly make fun of himself. Something the woke and conservative crowd can't do

Too often, a comedian is lauded for opinions even if they’re not funny. Not comedy to me. Funny is funny. I also hate the hypocrisy of laughing at stuff that you agree with but then calling for the cancellation of someone you don’t agree with, even if they’re really funny.

Self derision is always the safest form of comedy. Its what made Louis CK famous, and if you watch Ricky Gervais' FIRST Golden Globes then they were mostly self derision. You can't go wrong with that because if you make fun of yourself, you can't get offended.
The reality is that what is 'off limits' right now is essentially what you'd call 'vindictive comedy', which is stuff that should have been off limits ages ago. Actually, it usually was. You can actually still do 'generality' jokes, virtually nobody complains if you make jokes at the expense of politicians. Go watch a Bill Hicks or George Carlin act and it still holds up just fine. You can still do silly british style humour so basically what is out of line are the low hanging fruit that has always made for pretty bad comedy. Its the people who are infatuated with identity politics and want to make jokes about it that suffer, and frankly they weren't funny anyway. Its not like there is any lack of subject to base humour on. When comedians do that, they are essentially going for the easy crowd appeal, like when they walk into Denver and say its the greatest city in the world or that Boulder sucks. There has ALWAYS been stuff off limits, hell, go ask Leenny Bruce.
