Commenting on the prize, Stewart said, “I am truly honored to receive this award. I have long admired and been influenced by the work of Mark Twain, or, as he was known by his given name, Samuel Leibowitz.”
“For more than three decades, Jon Stewart has brightened our lives and challenged our minds as he delivers current events and social satire with his trademark wit and wisdom. For me, tuning into his television programs over the years has always been equal parts entertainment and truth”
    - Deborah F. Rutter, Kennedy Center President
The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor recognizes individuals who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th-century novelist and essayist Samuel Clemens, best known as Mark Twain. As a social commentator, satirist, and creator of characters, Clemens was a fearless observer of society, who startled many while delighting and informing many more with his uncompromising perspective on social injustice and personal folly.
As a recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, Stewart received a copy of an 1884 bronze portrait bust of Mark Twain sculpted by Karl Gerhardt (1853-1940). Previous recipients can be seen by scrolling down this page.
Capital One® is the Presenting Sponsor of this year’s Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor as part of the bank’s three-year, $3 million gift to fund Comedy at the Kennedy Center, a signature program at the Center focused on elevating comedy as an art form and uniting the community through laughter.
The 23rd Mark Twain Prize for American Humor is under the direction of the creative team from Done + Dusted, the Kennedy Center’s producing partner for the Mark Twain Prize since 2018. This year’s ceremony marks the 23rd year that the Kennedy Center’s marquee comedy award will be broadcast nationally.
The event was created by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Bob Kaminsky, Peter Kaminsky, Mark Krantz, and John Schreiber. The Kennedy Center is grateful to Cappy McGarr for his steadfast support of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor since its inception in 1998.

What makes it even more fun is the fact that this quote is often slightly inaccurate... Most people remember it as "The report of my death was grossly exaggerated." a tiny bit of an exaggeration in itself. Certainly close enough. I'm surprised the part where he said " *_I_* have even heard on good authority that I was dead." isn't more popular... but I guess the version of the quote used in his biography just rolls off the tongue easier.

John Stewart's Daily Show took the SNL 'Weekend Update' comedy segment, and made it into important commentary, intelligent debate, and the willingness to call bullshit where traditional media would not. Colbert, Noah, and Oliver have extended that approach in their own ways. John Oliver's deeply researched investigative reporting is the gold standard now for calling bullshit, and educating the electorate. Oliver put it well when he talked about how much Jon has meant to so may people. I am one of them. When 9/11 happened I went to my boss and asked for my two weeks vacation and went to NYC for the first time. I thought my Navy training in fire fighting and first aid might be useful, but they weren't. By the time I got there, it was hard to even get into ground zero, but using my old military ID I finally did. But the fires were under control (out actually) and there were few if any victims left needing first aid. So I spent my time schleping food and drinks to the real heroes trying to save whoever was left.
One day, two fire fighters asked me to help them move a large piece of concrete off a victim to rescue her and I did. When we moved it and tried to pull her out, only her torso came out - she was a beautiful, dead, young woman. They managed to deal with it - probably not the first time - I threw up and left the area, bought some beer, got a hotel room and decided to leave. I did not think I could take it. That night, I watched The Daily Show for the first time - I had heard it was funny, and thought some laughs might help, All of Jon's speech hit me, but the part where he said that people from all over, with buckets, rebuilding was extraordinary made me realize that I had to go back. I can't say for sure, but had I left, I think I would have been ashamed to this day. Thanks to Jon, I didn't.

It's no understatement though. Just someone from Amsterdam, the Netherlands...but the Daily Show very much helped me to find strength in my convictions, to apply a healthy dose of relativism to the darker sides of life and the world - and not unimportantly, and I think this goes for many people, helped me feel a bit more sane in an often maddening world. Thank you Jon (and John!).

Jon Stewart is (was) pure genius. His political satire put fear into some of the biggest aholes in American politics. His comedy is brilliant. He changed the lives of many of today's successful comedians/satirists. When he rises from the grave it will be like the second coming. God bless Jon Stewart.

It's SOOOOO appropriate he's at his desk for his own show: more than anyone to come out of the Daily Show, John has done a magnificent job of taking the best parts of the Daily Show (it kept people informed, while making them laugh, in that order) and putting it into his own work. Brilliant, finally someone that came from England that we actually want here :-P

Neve really had a forum to say this before, so here goes nothing.
Back in 2009, I hit a rough patch. The wife left, lost the job and house, I couldn't see my boys as much as I wanted thanks to the ex, and I had been diagnosed with a condition (a severe allergy to light) that forced me to change how I lived radically. Needless to say, this had a negative effect on my emotions. I distinctly remember the first time I felt good and happy, was when I had discovered both The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. Watching these two shows gave me the first moments of pure happiness after all that crap happened, for which I will be forever grateful. So thanks to John, Steve, John (Oliver), and all the people who worked on the show, for bringing me out of the darkness, metaphorically.

Amen to the only comedian who didn't sell out. A lot of the others such as Colbert purely went after the money and sold out by diluting their script and appealing to the mainstream rather than staying true to the spirit of sarcasm/comedy.
