The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor recognizes individuals who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th-century novelist and essayist Samuel Clemens, best known as Mark Twain. As a social commentator, satirist, and creator of characters, Clemens was a fearless observer of society, who startled many while delighting and informing many more with his uncompromising perspective on social injustice and personal folly.
As a recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, Stewart received a copy of an 1884 bronze portrait bust of Mark Twain sculpted by Karl Gerhardt (1853-1940). Previous recipients can be seen by scrolling down this page.

The 23rd Mark Twain Prize for American Humor is under the direction of the creative team from Done + Dusted, the Kennedy Center’s producing partner for the Mark Twain Prize since 2018. This year’s ceremony marks the 23rd year that the Kennedy Center’s marquee comedy award will be broadcast nationally.
The event was created by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Bob Kaminsky, Peter Kaminsky, Mark Krantz, and John Schreiber. The Kennedy Center is grateful to Cappy McGarr for his steadfast support of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor since its inception in 1998.

He has no ego despite his fame, I love how he dares to be zany and look foolish for comedy but his comedy is always full of heart too.

Full disclosure, I had no idea who Ed Helms was, but I am so glad I decided to watch his speech, too. Seems like a very fun guy.
He was one of the original correspondents on the Daily Show. He did a lot of great segments. I recommend looking them up.
He also was Andy Bernard, a main character on The Office. He's also a respected bluegrass musician

@@guinnessharvey4476 I think you underestimate the global fame of some of the speakers. I mean... Chappelle? I can't peak to Laos or Mozambique but I'd say quite a lot of these people are known in Europe at least.
Stewart and TDS (and thus most of the speakers) were useful to many Europeans like myself trying to make sense of things happening across the pond that made no sense to us as outsiders. And even if it didn't always succeed in that it did often show us that a whole lot of Americans were equally confused and appalled by the things that bothered us. And if nothing else there was always just the sense of catharsis at being able to laugh together at the things that scared us.
Also if you think the rest of the world in general and Europe in particular don't care about the US or their celebrities... boy do I have news for you.
And for the record I did enjoy watching this. A lot of top-tier comedic talent and the opportunity to watch Jon Stewart squirm under the barrage of compliments. I can only imagine how difficult it would have been for him if he wasn't absolutely and most certainly dead.

That was perfect watching all the reactions from Chappelle looking around to Stewart saying what we thought; WHAT IS HAPPENNING -- wild and unexpected, t-shirt cannon for levity. And Davidson tried to clown on Helms?
Davidson's bit was a 6th grade book report. Lost in the teleprompter and addressing the camera more than the audience or the guest of honor. I'm biased against Pete, but come on man. Roasting is not his specialty ** ahhhh shit -- on second watch that whole mets vid was unnecessary. I can see now why Pete wanted to stand up for Jon in some way. Once again: grey areas! LOVE IT
