You should do a competitive analysis of Greek vs Roman mythology stories. And why they bifurcated and how their own cultural histories affected the changes in their mythological tales. Pretty remarkable thing to map out and look at, honestly.
Iโve always wondered this. How two cultures have almost identical god structures, stories and myths. If it started as one, how and when did it diverge? I adore this topic but have never really heard the reason why
Just the romans adopted the greek gods
As theirs
Is from greek coloniests at 7century bc
This work probably takes enormous effort. Maybe you should do it.

This is by far the best video on Greek mythology I've seen. I didn't want it to stop. The work you did to put everything in chronological order in the best way you could is amazing. I appreciated the sense of time moving and understanding where all these stories I've had an appreciation for land. Looking forward to more of your content. Would love to see more of these on other mythologies and even religious text.
So I took 5 key things from this epic and easily understood self study video of The ENTIRE Story of Greek Mythology Explained
1. the humans were flees
2. the gods are children
3. the children were heroes
4. the "hero's" in MOST cases were the original villains
5. and the villains weren't really ever villeins at all. They were just cursed, tricked, or forced by literal disaster level circumstances lol
AMAZING VID with my adhd I had to stop and take a couple breaks over the course of weeks haha but it truly truly was so easy to sift back and fourth through!
Seems all gods are actual scumbags. I saw the same trend you did, Medusa didn't deserve to be punished when Athena knew it was Poseidon who forced himself on her
@@devroom8904 You are watching it too much from a psychological point of view, narratively speaking Athena couldn't just, as being the goddess of wisdom, let Medusa go without consequences, even tho it was Poseidon's fault. Also there were gods who didn't really actively hurt others like Hermes, Demetra, Hades, Hestia and, if we think about it, even Ares.
@@mariano8910 A psychological consideration of the events should be duly noted. Keep in mind that the Greeks considered these folk 'gods' for a long time, with a Roman version of each story as well. More often than not, this was used by man to justify moral shortcomings: "Sure, I committed incest, but didn't Zeus do the same thing?" Not that the point you're making is untrue, as we should consider it narratively as well, but this was far more interactive back then, and these gods were objects of man's veneration
@@gerudoking3180 Are you saying Zeus or Aphrodite are not gods? They surely are, and since we're talking about the Ancient Rome, i have to remind you that adultery was indeed a crime and people likely couldn't just say "Zeus did it too" to defend themselves.
You did not try to attack Hestia or Hades btw.
Zeus also is not a cheater just because yes, loving this much rapresented something of the ancient society: the chief god had of course as a lover of wisdom to be an experienced lover, as it was the feature of important anf intellectual men, strengthen also by the fact that the term philosopher just means "LOVER of knowledge". (Symposium backs me up)
And yes, the greek gods are elevations of greater concepts of the greek world, but that doesn't mean spirituality must be absent by it, you talked about it with the tone of the one who watches the greeks as men who venerated just things they liked when this is not definitely the case: they just thought gods were related in their highness to things they thought were important. And frankly, not everyone believed in the same identical things, gods or rituals in Greece, philosophies speak by themselves.
@@mariano8910 hello! Iโm not referring to anything youโve said, or at least I donโt think. Itโs honestly hard for me to apprehend what youโre saying, so if youโd like to explain it a little better, Iโm all ears. I did call them โgods,โ and I never pretended they werenโt. While I donโt believe the folklore, I do believe in a spiritual side of life in which these spirits are manifest (not โon Olympus,โ but they ran the Greek nation, per Deut. 32:8-9.) The gods here are reflections of the hearts of the Greeks at the time, for one will only reflect the character of their subjector.
I have to say this is the most comprehensive Greek mythology I ever heard, and I have heard hundreds of different variations because I study anthropology and mythology for over 20 years
Wow Iโm a big fan of Greek Mythology. After this video Iโm going to research what anthropology means. I rather learn than someone tell me about it. I donโt feel weird anymore about being in love with Greek mythology. I see Iโm not alone. Not much people my color are into things like this so Iโm considered weird but these comments make me feel normal.
Then you know the story of Pandora is commonly related as in this video, but that it was Prometheus who took the lid off of Pandoras Jar and let loose all the horror, except for Hope. Gee whiz, I wonder why it was changed and distorted into Pandora as the bad one...HMMM! LOL Read Murrays Manual of Mythology from 1906 for more hidden truth of this ilk.
@@beckythornton6470 In Hesoid's Work and Days, 700 BC, it was Pandora who opened it. 16th century author Erasmus said it was Epimetheus who opened it.
@@tak_tak62 ...careful only if you watch movies and media about Greek Mythology... watch it with the grain of salt (or a whole bag of salt)... because they mostly distort it... and dont give the real story or meaning behind it.

Youโll love the stories as told and read aloud by Stephen Fry. Theyโre on Audible. His ability to brought each character to life as well as teach the connections to words and ideas and places that we are familiar with today.
Itโs excellent.

There are parallel stories in most ancient cultures.
Human experience, religion included, has common threads.
Christianity is not the oldest religion and more modern religious leaders drew from whatever it took to teach and/or control the people before them.
Look up religious syncretism.
Youโre not being clever.
Look into comparative religion studies.
Look into comparative mythology studies.
Look into the history of Christianity from its inception.
Not from subjective sources, but from the facts and events in history courses and materials.

WOW, this is so simple, so beautiful. this is a masterpiece of Greek mythology and I am really grateful I found your channel and this video as I was so interested in Greek mythology but never knew where to start. I am in love with this video now and will continue to watch it every now and then. Thank you from the bottom of my heartโค
I can't believe this is 3 hours and not everything can still be covered. There is way too many myths and this would go on for hour and hours if everything was said. This is definetly a good starting point to learn more, especially for people just getting into Greek mythology, qnd I recommend researching more into it if you are interested. Thank you for making this!
what myths you remember that weren't talked here?? i'm curious

I stumbled across this video yesterday and I've just finished it, I was invested from beginning to end! I have such a great obsession with mythologies and this has been the most amazing video to listen to - I understand it all so much more now ๐คฉ I really hope in the future for videos like this on other mythologies I would be delighted to listen to them
The connection of the Age of Heroes to the Age of Iron and to modern man looking back on Earth from the perspective of the gods left me speechless.
I always thought Oedipus was just a Greek mythological character that was in love with his mother. This video paints a much more detailed picture. I guess for most of us Greek mythology has always been greatly simplified. Amazing video!
I almost got emotional towards the end of the video. I watched it all two nights in a row and it felt like a movie, but without getting bored even a second. The quality of these videos is literally out of this world! Gotta thank you for all the effort you put into making this.
Thank you for this thorough documentary โค
A few weeks ago I decided to start understanding Greek philosophers to apply that to my characters in stories but then realized that a lot of it is based on or a general belief existing around the ideas of the gods. So I looked into this video and I watch parts of it here and there and I have 40 min left. Itโs about time!
You have no idea how the world needs this. A "chronological ordered" greek mythology epic!
Thank you so much for you effort! The world truly appreciates this.
Timeout. Hercules was gay ? Just asking.
@@ericparnell2037 Considering how he had a wife and children, no. However, homoromantic and homosexual relationships are not uncommon in greek myths and ancient greek in general (think of pederasty). Gods like Apollo, Zeus arguably, Hermes, Pan, and Dionysus all have myths in which they fall in love with the same sex. This isn't essentially "gay" though as same-sex relations where thought of differently back then.

This video is phenomenal !! Thank you so much for all the research and wonderful graphics and art displayed in this video! This video is so unique, it most certainly is the best video I have ever watched!
I started the video thinking I was gonna stop watching in less than half an hour, then I finished the whole thing before I knew it. Really loved the ending and how it profoundly drew all the stories back to who and what we are right now.

I hope Greek people will go back and pray their ancient gods/goddessess. And neglect the intruder modern religion capture them and manipulate them forget their gods and practice new belief which is human made
@@kangkang1560 fyi it is stated that Greeks welcomed the christian religion when it first arived there, Christianity became the prominent religion throughout the age of the roman and byzantine empire and became even stronger when we were enslaved by the Turks and conservatism is holding it in place atm, despite that fact there are still some dodecatheists (the belief of the 12 Gods) but don't really show it, The orthodox church has huge economic, political and military power unfortunately due to old laws and beliefs so it's not very likely to ever come back

This was a great summary for my research of Greek myth. I know a lot more that wasn't mentioned in this video such as different versions of certain stories, but this is a much shorter recap than what I wrote out so I'll definitely reference this video heavily for my webcomic that I want to make (it's about modern retellings of Greek myths and will have a lot of bonus content, such as fun facts, at the end of chapters). But it's gonna take a while until I manage to even just get all of the character designs done so this video will be super helpful for the next few years of character and story creation ahead of me.

Greek Mythology has a unique appreciation for irony, metaphor, and poetic justice that other mythologies and religious stories almost always lack entirely. When reading Homer, it is clear that you are reading the works of a poet. Not a prophet, or a historian. It makes you wonder how the Greeks and Romans might have read these texts. Whether they took them literally, word for word. Or whether they viewed their gods more deistically, and were able to appreciate the works of Homer as works of art - just as we do today - rather than as works of historical or religious significance.
You don't think Norse mythology is like this?
