I was there. We originally were scheduled to see him September 12th 2001. The city was shut down until the following week. We were all so scared and worried, the atmosphere was heavy and the air outside the studio was an acrid yellow haze. It was also so quiet you could hear a pin drop on 5th avenue.

I know this is going to sound weird, I was in highschool when it happened. And after the 24/7 news coverage, I was exhausted and uncertain what was going to happen. So I was excited when Conan came back. It was a break, and I always loved his show. And he got me through. When something hurts, you just dig your heels in and get the job done. You don't moan and complain and you don't put it on anyone else. And you find little moments of joy.

Also, him talking about not giving into cynicism is such a great message to put through.
These horrible events do shape a hateful perspective among the general public towards a certain group. All the grief and trauma makes it easy to lose humanity, especially for the victims and the young people. It is important to not lose that.

They had just renovated the set and unveiled it a few days before 9/11 and made a brand new backdrop that included the WTC towers. They had to remake the backdrop, but they hadn't been able to do it by this point. I think the fires were still smoldering. So, they had to bunch up the curtain to obscure where the towers were.

It can be relatable for this day in age to remember that, and that there are good people in our world when we're going through some of the darkest periods. Beautiful touch encouraging to appreciate what there is even when so much was lost, for an asshole Conan gave a perfect message to help many get through the trauma they faced.

Crazy how I instantly recall - not having seen this since it first aired - watching Conan walk directly over to his desk. To sound like an old man, all you young folk gotta realize how broken we all were. We just watched the news - 24/7. Watched the planes hit over, and over, and over. Waited desperately for answers that we knew would never come. Things like this show pulled us out of that dark, dark place. I remember sitting in my dorm room just soaking in news channels and every few hours just uncontrollably bursting into tears. It was like I was a bucket that was slowly filling with drops of misery and every so often I had to dump it out. I still can’t believe it was real - what a horrific time.

We need to remember from this tragedy thatThe United States is still a great country. We have just lost sight of our purpose. To keep victims of 9/11 and to honor them, is to not sink into decisive politics. Don’t support presidents, senators and congressmen and women who don’t hold the same vision of helping being the country together. We need to help each other and talk to one another. Stop the hate, violence and put downs of people with different cultures, ideas and backgrounds. That’s how we continue to move forward as a country.

Everyone seems to remember where they were on 9/11 .. and it's no different across the ocean - I'm from London, UK. I had just turned 8 years old two days prior, I'd just gotten back from Junior school (elementary in the US I think) and I remember going to my Nan's flat which was just down the street from me and my mums flat and my Nan had the news on which being a kid I didn't really think much of but I remember when I got home from school I was always allowed to watch cartoons while my Nan made me some dinner but that day I wasn't allowed to watch Cartoons, and my Nan made me something quick to eat. I remember sitting on the floor playing with some stuff I'd gotten for my birthday and occasionally glancing at the TV to see these big buildings on fire with lots of smoke and as a kid I didn't pay much attention but I remember those buildings being on TV the whole day. It's only these days as an adult I can really understand and appreciate the scale of what I saw back then when all I could think about was my toys and what I was doing at the time .. being in blissful ignorance of the true horror that was actually unfolding in the world.

It was a weird time. We legit did not know if things would be "normal" again. No one knew exactly how to move on and keep going. The vibe among citizens was very unique. Unlike today, it DID briefly feel like we were all in it together. White, black, brown, everyone. It was nice. Then we forgot, and here we are, Being soldiers to political parties and accepting having to choose between an orange man who panders to the shittyness in people, and a senile twat who's brain is melting right before our eyes. Let's all expect and demand better. Please. Political parties that pander to our hatred of eachother cannot be good enough😮

Conan has always opposed cynicism and I think that’s really admirable. I’m a tongue-in-cheek cynic…a curb your enthusiasm style cynic…it’s just fun to me and a good way to let the poison out. But the amount of meaningless, pathological cynicism out there nowadays is really unhealthy. Kids who have, by nature, no perspective on the world or how safe/wealthy they are in the grand scheme of things, are being allowed to descend into this putrid trench of misanthropic cynicism. It sounds awful but I think the only way out is through *actual* strife…not this “blehhh, cost of living, blehhh” first world nonsense. We don’t know what it means to struggle anymore and that existential complacency has poisoned our minds. We all know where our next 50 meals are coming from as we sit in our climate controlled dwellings with hot water having NO IDEA that we’re all rich beyond the wildest dreams of our ancestors and even many people in other parts of the world today. There’s a solution in making people understand this but they don’t wanna hear it. Twitter enemies, embarrassing political causes and rampant cynicism are all we know in this age of digital stagnation.
