Interesting. I worked on crank lines at Ford, GM and Mitsubishi as an OEM service engineer for 20 years. It seems that they are missing a few steps. There are no undercuts on the bearings and no heat treatment either. These cranks look nice but my experience tells me that they will only last a few months before failing. We worked hard to hold tolerances down to the tens of microns but I can't see how they are even holding to several thousands. Our crank lines had 50+ ops. This one is skipping many essential steps. What they are doing is impressive but these cranks would compare to what the US was producing in the 1930's.

I suspect the tolerances they are dealing with are pretty big engine wide. They don’t even use torque wrenches.

A quick search of the casting number will tell that this is for a Perkins 135 engine. It's a stationary 3 cylinders diesel used in generators so they will only run at a preset speed, unlike car and truck engines that will indefinitely idle, increase speed, decrease speed, overspeed etc...all while the load and temperature constantly changes. And also some of them have to endure their common nemesis, super clueless drivers.

The great thing about this video is that all the comments are acknowledging the application of skill with very limited facilities and probably training, but also that modern manufacturing techniques and equipment will make more, better and cheaper product. At the end of it, these cranks are low quality, but also good enough for the application, manufacturing them is paying wages and the end product is being put to work and will also be making someone money so they can all feed their families. Well done done to all who are overcoming the challenges of life without the stepping stone of being born in an industrially advanced nation 👍

Loads of comments from "engineers" who, I assume, are from developed / Western nations. These cranks are going into 3-pot generator engines that run at constant speed that is likely around the sort of RPM that most cars IDLE. The parts do not need to be manufactured to especially tight tolerances nor made out of particularly exotic materials.
Sure the engine will run a little rough and lumpy and use some oil but I'd bet my arse they last fucking ages. How do you think cranks for cars were made before the age of automation and CNC? I'd bet there are some machinists in developed countries who couldn't hand finish these cranks to the same quality as these guys. They're literally eyeballing the drilling for oil galleries.
The goal here is not to make high precision machinery. They're making simple, cheap engines that are relatively reliable AND easy to maintain with a hammer and screwdriver for use in unforgiving conditions. I'd say they're delivering exactly what has been asked, in less than ideal conditions and with workshop equipment that would be considered below standard in the West.

From what I pieced together from other comments: This engine is a clone from an early 80ies massey ferguson tractor engine. 3cyl, 2,5l displacement, under 50HP. Good enough for the task and - honestly - impressive to do it with such simple means. It just doesn't matter if the stroke of one cylinder is 0,1 mm shorter than the other or if there is a little stress riser, or the oil feed line isn't centered. Good enough is good enough!

heat treated steel and tight tolerance is required for modern high speed engine, to maintain oil film pressure to withstand force and horsepower load on crank.
with 2.5L engine expected to produce 50HP at low RPM? cast iron , huge bearing , huge oil gallery (and some thicker oil) with loose tolerance is more than enough.

Anyone else think the geometry of a crankshaft is fucking beautiful? Not only the physics behind it, or the sound it makes, but the shape is almost alien like, almost monolithic looking. Multiple centers of gravity all connected! The mathematics involved to conceive such a idea is brilliant! Mother nature + man's ingenuity at its finest!

for those wondering, this crank is used in Massey Ferguson 3 cylinder diesel tractor, and not in a water pump application as some suggested. This tractor produces 50HP, so if right alloy was used, and no major defects introduced during casting process it could work despite lack of hardening or heat treatment…
