One night, while outside the house, my child told me, excitedly, "Dad, did you see that bat flying around?!" I just dismissed him with, "We really have lots of bats here in the Philippines. Don't get too excited." But if he told me, "It's about your size," I would've ran straight back into our house. 😅
We had a lot of these in our yard growing up. Eating fruits from our trees. Chicos is their favorite. These animals are harmless by the way. Even had one as a pet for a while. It was still a baby and i think it’s mother died and it was left all alone.
Philippines and Indonesia is so similar, even the military t-shirt is so similar.. I really want to try Philippine's Jolly Bee franchise in Indonesia.. Hope they open more retail here..
They have those bats in Australia too! I thought Dracula was coming to eat me the first time I was in Australia. I think they call them “flying foxes “
The largest bat, golden-capped fruit bat, and to others as the golden-crowned flying fox (Acerodon jubatus), it has a wingspan of up to 5.5 feet, according to the Encyclopedia of Life. But these giants are light, weighing just about 2.6 lbs. (1.2 kg), according to the IUCN.
Wait till you see it fly, it looks really terrifying but it is quite docile up close. It is just like a huge, scary, misunderstood flying doggo that needs to stay clear away from China.
In all seriousness, apparently these things have been listed as endangered since 2016 as a result of, primarily, hunting for bushmeat and habitat loss. So you're kinda dead accurate (except not Chinese)...
Bayakan doesn't have 6 feet wings span. But last month we see a deid actual bayakan at the forest here in Mindanao Philippines and measure it with the wings span of 5'4". Not kidding!
Im filipino. Scary thing is that when i was young grandparents and old uncle n aunts would tell crazy ghost stories about giant animals in the trees n crazy giant mythical predatory creatures. Who knows how many of they are true.. after this i dont know
We have a lot of that back home in the Philippines we called it ‘kabog’ 🦇 in Bicol region and they love to eat ripe indian mango 🥭 fruits. It’s fun to look at them at night specially when it’s full moon 🌕.
If you live in the Philippines (like me) or in Australia, this is a normal sight. We also have rats the size of puppies and eagles that can pick up a child with their claws.
Philippines eagle can grab your toddler some Filipinos believed there's a an aswang or shape-shifter monster..then Found out that the real suspect are the Philippine eagle catch their toddler
These podcasts have given many talented people who would never get a chance otherwise to show what they can by bypassing the powers that be and going straight to the public and showing what they can do and who they are. The podcast changed entertainment forever
Yall should see the world largest eagle... also in the Philippines... it has a very unique and creative name, it's called the "Philippine Eagle." 🤣 But seriously, the fucker is HUGE
Some of Gi's that stationed in the Philippines before knows about that kind of bats because U.S. base are in Subic Zambales Philippines where those bats you mention are also present.
bats are good pollinators...they are useful in dispersing seeds too. The variety of these bats make the Philippines on top of the mega diverse diaspora of animals in the planet...These bats are scary at first, but people especially in the provinces are pretty used to them. It's like birds that you see in the morning type of thing.
I love the use of the word "shitter" in place of the word restroom. My grandpa who passed away almost 10 years ago use to call his bathroom "the shitter" or "the growler" lol.
I remember when i was in highschool, i'd go out in a specific time after school (i think it was after right before sunset) then look up at the sky because there are hundreds of these bats flying everytime
People see man size bats and are in awe Me upon seeing it: Someone get the Belmont family and Alucard right now. Count Dracula and his hordes are back and this time he has conquered the sun.
Try sitting in a dark jungle and seeing this just silently flying through the trees like batman. They don't fly high, they fly close, and its terrifying.
When I saw that thing I thought of the flying character trying to get into the bus from the movie Jeepers Creepers. "Jeepers, creepers, where did you get those peepers?"
y'all know that these pictures are just taken at an angle, that makes the bats look incredibly big right? The largest type of Flying Fox Bat is like 34 cm long, and yes that is a large bat but it's not nearly as large as these ones are portrayed as.
Ah we arnt they have been well known for centuries! Plus Pat apparently doesn't understand forced perspective because they're not 5ft tall they're about a foot-and-a-half tall!
I’ve seen these in the Palawan Philippians. They where sitting on the many rocks there. I couldn’t believe it at first until the boat driver drove close and one of them took off. It pretty scary.
Yeah, it’s forced perspective. They aren’t nearly as big as he’s making them out to be. I’ve seen eagles with almost seven foot wingspans and they only stand about a foot and a half tall.
Hi, I live in the southern Island of Mindanao in the Philippines. I lstayed in a farm here for two years and I've seen these things although not as big. It amazes me every time I see some on a full moon, it's like I ought to be scare but I'm just too much in awe to be scared, oh did I mention there's no power in that farm so, yeah. Sadly I'd move in a city so no more sightings for me now.
I think that last photo is from Indonesia.. See the man with green uniform.. that's Indonesian military uniform... You can Google it and get similar uniform
That woodpecker is called a Pileated Woodpecker. Theyre beautiful and insane. Watching them go to town on a chunk of wood looks like a professional axe competitions. Also, I've said that the large fruit bats look just like a black chihuahua.
I was stationed in the Philippines in the early 70's, we'd see the bats usually right at dusk. First time seeing was an eye opener for sure.
@Libertate Veritas Yes but not the size of those talked about.
