Ahead of this weekend’s spring game, Ryan, Fred, and Channing visited one of college football’s historic programs, the University of Texas, and are sitting down with head coach, Steve Sarkisian for a layered conversation about almost losing it all to climbing back to the top, mending bonds with family, interracial marriage and the future of Texas football.
Never allowing failures to define your future has become the message Sarkisian spreads to his players, coaches and those around him. Known as one of the most dynamic and successful college football coaches under the Nick Saban tree, Sarkisian turned his low moments into lessons and his opportunities into a success story.
After being fired from USC in 2015 mid season, Sarkisian sought treatment for alcoholism and worked to overcome personal struggles. Not being able to find any coaching job and about to give up and turn into a different career path, Sark received a call from Nick Saban who saw something in him to give him a shot.
Embracing his second chance to the fullest, Sarkisian opens up on how his own trials and tribulations have helped made him navigate coaching and relationships with more of an open mind. Becoming the head coach of University of Texas football team in 2022, he makes it known that Nick Saban saved his career and he wouldn’t be where he is today without Saban’s grace, which is why he chooses to extend the same courtesy to others on this journey.
Sarkisian credits his positive outlook and bouncing back to the unconditional support from his now wife, Loreal. The two have set the tone for positivity and added flare to college football, creating an unlikely dynamic that people have gravitated towards.
NIL and the transfer portal have been big topics throughout college athletics and one that our very own, Fred Taylor feels very strongly about. Fred asks Sarkisian about his perspective on NIL and the transfer portal and as a head coach how he combats this during recruitment. Steve talks about the tool of adaptability and finding the positives in change. Promoting a philosophy of not allowing players to come back to the team if they've entered the transfer portal, Sark believes they’ve maintained a steady program at Texas due to transparency and truly selling that playing for Texas is a 40-50 year decision rather than a 4-5 year decision.

He definitely decided along time ago he was going to be a dad and dude spent his life studying being a dad just as much as a ball player. Great dads build themselves up to be a father

Sark is a genuine dude. I never had any doubts about what this man brings to UT. He is putting Texas through growing pains, process changes, etc. I can't think of a better man to bring an institution and people forward than this man; a man that has had to rebuild, gone through the growing pains himself and can relate so genuinely. There are many reasons recruits gravitated to Sark and the results will come.

Agreed. But knowing them, its in the works but it’s probably a scheduling issue. I had a podcast a few years ago and getting the guest’s schedules to fit was always the hardest part.

Absolutely loved this! Knowing his story and why he got fired and as a fellow man in recovery. When I saw there was an interview with Sarkisian, I couldn't wait to get off work to see this. Great questions, men! I'm definitely interested in subscribing to this channel now.

I really enjoyed this interview! I’m a BAMA grad, and I always wondered what Coach Saban saw in Sark to keep bringing him in. Now, I see! The questions you guys asked him really helped me get to see him for who he really is. AND, I had no idea his wife was a sister!

I met Coach Sark a couple of times while he was in Atlanta and he is a great guy. He unfairly took the blame when the problem was a bad front office and bad personnel moves. I have been through my own second and third chances. I am an LSU guy but I am a Coach Sark fan.
Good point Mr Bill; however, I do not necessarily agree that your 2nd/3rd chance should be THE UNIVERSITY of TEXAS or LSU etc... How about Barton Community College as your 2nd and 3rd Chance. One of the first things that caught my attention when our Back to Back Directors cup Champ Del Conte athletic director hired Sark was when Coach Sark said he cab vision hinself here for over 15 years at the 40 Acres...i said this is our Coach...

I love, love this podcast!!! I’ve loved Ryan Clark since I first saw him as an analyst on First Take and Sports Center after the games. I was just pissed off when I thought ESPN didn’t value this man. As for The Pivot, it’s such a smart program and “God bless the child” as they say, should ESPN get stupid again. Another word about Fred, the serious one with that deep sexy voice that commands attention, and Channing who almost always makes me laugh, blush and sometimes cover my ears, geez!!!
