- On 17 July 1998, eighty years to the day after their murder, the remains of Emperor Nicholas II, his wife, three of his children, and the four faithful retainers were finally laid to rest in St Petersburgยดs Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral. The remains were interred in the crypt of the cathedral's St Catherine Chapel, the resting place of Russian emperors since the reign of Peter the Great. Over fifty members of the Romanov Family and their close relatives traveled to Russia from all corners of the world, from Australia, North and South America, and Europe. President Yeltsin announced his presence at the ceremonies as well as many ambassadors, politicians, and prominent personalities. From Britain, Prince Michael of Kent and from Germany members of the Oldenburg dynasty, both closely related to the Romanovs.
Addressing the funeral ceremony, President Boris Yeltsin described the murder of the Russian royal family as one of the most shameful pages in Russian history, and urged Russians to close a "bloody century" with repentance.

If you have ever been to Rome and to St. Paul's Outside the Walls you will see a large green marble altar toward the front and to the right. The expensive green marble was donated to the basilica by Czar Nicolas. I've seen this altar a few times and it is absolutely exquisite.

Tsar and their families, they were quite early in adopting photography and video filmings. As backwards as they were in almost everything else, I don't recall any others being passionate about being filmed as much as the young princess around that era. ( and we have to consider packs of films were awfully expensive! ) There was the sentiment among the elites ( and ordinary people alike ) such thing was gimmick and not serious.

Because of Nikolai, Russia began to participate in the First World War. Millions of ordinary people died, this war did not bring Russia anything but suffering, but Nikolai did not want to admit it. Since 2015, The Russian Orthodox Church has 44 bone fragments belonging to Maria and Alexei, โfor further study,โ wonโt give a timeline for their return/burial.

Love or hate the Romanov dynasty, you can't deny that the Romanov family, despite their flaws, was still human at the end of the day who deserve to be treated like any other person with respect & decency. It's a shame the family was unable to escape their terrible deaths, but the least we can do is own up to our mistakes & give them the closure they deserved through their long overdue funeral. R. I. As an American, I've never been able to really relate to European peoples' love of their Monarchies, but regardless of my opinions on monarchism, communism, and even the Tsar himself, his children were absolutely innocent, and did not deserve such a cruel fate. I'm glad they finally recieved a proper burial, and I hope that they're able to rest easily.

25:25 When Yeltsin shook hands with Prince Dimitri Romanov, I got the chills. His father, Roman Petrovich Romanov, was the second cousin and godson of Czar Nicholas II. His family was able to flee and survived. Prince Dimitri Romanov died 2016 and sadly he didnt have any children and so another branch of the Romanov family died with him.

back in Soviet time it was regional communist leader Boris Yeltsin who ordered the Ipatiev House, where the executions took place, to be torn down - to eradicate any further evidence (that might have been recoverable with new DNA technology) and not to make it a site of pilgrimage. It's so sad to see that a burial could only happen about 80 years after their deaths... At least they got a burial in the end, even if there wasn't much of them to bury. Makes me sad to think about what kind of life those children could have had. May they all rest in heaven.

It doesn't make this tragedy any less which in part came from the German Tsarina's meddling, the collapse militarily of the Russians on the Eastern Front and possibly the cock-up of the British (alleged) rescue attempt as the Czechs and White Russians neared. The Dowager Empress, the Tsar's mother was sister to our Queen Alexandra, wife of King Edward VII. Bear in mind Europeans and at the last minute, American troops, in 1917 were also slaughtering each other in the trenches at the same time.

Although Iโm not Russian, but any decent and compassionate human beings would appreciate this proper recognition and burial ceremony for the Czar and Czarina, the Beautiful Romanov and good family that were so terribly mistreated and brutally murdered. This is a form of justice and love for the last Czar of Russia. Thank you to President Boris Nilolayevich Yeltsin and the good people of Russia.
Could they have had more children, perhaps another boy, or would all males born to them have the same disease. Alexi would never have been Czar as he would have died about age 16. Had they been honest with the public, they would have received sympathy and the hope the next baby born would be a son without this terrible disease. And had they steered themselves to the starving people rather than trying to make the Czarina happy they could have been very very popular and the people have food to eat. They made selfish mistakes but should have been able to live in exile.
The whole romanov family tried everything in their power to rule the country as best as they could do, honestly I feel bad that they had to go through all of this drama in their lives without any sort of assistants or any communication with the outside world it's just horrible to think about the situation. Erm, if you noticed, it was only five coffins: nicholas, Alexandra, Olga, Tatiana and Anastasia. The bones of Maria and alexei are in the custody of the Russian Orthodox Church indefinitely, for โfurther study,โ or some such.

As one who is Polish-American, and whose ancestors came from the portion of modern-day Poland and Ukraine formerly under the Habsburgs and later the Second Polish Republic, Tsar Nicholas II and his family DID NOT deserve the ending of their lives that they got; the Hohenzollern and Habsburg emperors at least got to live out their lives in relative comfort (albeit exiled), but sadly the Romanovs were brutally murdered, much like Charles I and the French Bourbons, just for being royals. Thankfully, all were glorified (canonized) as saints in the Russian Orthodox Church: as "Passion Bearers" in Russia proper, and as "New Martyrs" in the Church outside of Russia and in the multinational Orthodox Church in America.

The voices of the choir in harmony sounds so beautiful and angelic. Great to see members of the British Army's Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. Their predecessor the Royal Scots Greys (2nd Dragoons) had a long attachment to Nicholas II because of his relation to King George V. I know they even had him as Colonel-in-Chief during his last years.
