I think our approach and response has been slightly above average in the US. I think Trump has done as well as any President would have, and I’ll try to give some objective reasons why I believe that. And I’ll quickly add that I’m judging Trump on actions, and then I’ll comment on his communication.
First, there are limits to federal authority. Trump is not legally allowed to quarantine the country as its unconstitutional. But he did say some things to bring attention to the people who do have authority. He clearly stated that Cuomo of New York needed to get more done in the early days of the outbreak, and New York became the epicenter of the world. Trump threatened to quarantine NY, NJ, and CT on March 28th, and as it turns out, it would have been the right thing to do. Cuomo called it “preposterous” and said it would cause “mayhem and pandemonium.” As we know, those states are quarantined themselves from seven other states with higher infection rates. Prior to looking at internal travel restrictions, Trump had halted travel from China and Europe, both good moves and done in a timely manner.
We needed three things to prevent the spread: effective testing, contact tracing, and containment policies. Testing was slow to be rolled out, but I believe it would have been under any President. Contact tracing is impossible without first limiting movement. This was done nationally around March 16, and on March 20th, New York issued a stay at home warning. It was not followed effectively, and it was too late anyway. So we had a poor containment strategy because we had never done it before. That is as much on the people as it is any politician.
We had little or no contact tracing because we aren’t set up for it, and millions of us would not cooperate anyway. Why is contact tracing so hard? I’ll give an example. Say I was in a store getting groceries I am low on. I come in contact with about 10 people. I pay and leave. If one of those ten people tests positive in the next few days, there is very little chance they can find me to tell me about it. Take that situation and multiply by 10 or even 10 million every day.
Trump claims the Obama administration left the cupboard bare in the strategic national stockpile system. Maybe that is true, but Trump had been in office for three years, and there was time to replenish it. Where was the Congressional oversight? Doing a search from the time Trump was inaugurated until late 2019, I don’t find press releases or statements from anyone in Congress that this was a problem. Looks like it was under the radar. I also haven’t heard anyone step up and say, “I told you so.” Believe me, in this day and age, if anyone had, and they could step up to hurt Trump, they would.
Trump worked to get ventilators built without implementing the Defense Production Act. It was chaotic, but everyone needing a bed or a ventilator got one.
I think generally Trump has tried to respect the states and their governors and has tried to help where he could. Some of the things he did were critical and timely, and politically unpopular at the time.
Now on to his communication. It sucks. The long rambling daily updates. The musings, out loud, about radical treatments. The incoherent speculation. The tendency towards optimism when cold facts were called for (many people called that downplaying, I wouldn't say so).
Some of us don’t like that, in fact, hate it. But we can set that aside, understanding it is important, but also understanding that the actions are more important. Even taking that into account, I think Trump did as well as anyone would have. He doesn’t control the activities of millions of people. He can’t be responsible for the large number of at-risk people in the US. He can only work on logistics, urgency, and coordination outside of communicating.
In the early days, the math said 2.2 million people could die of Covid-19 in the US. That was based on 30% becoming infected and 2.2% dying of those infected. Today, the death rate is about over 3-4%, down from a peak of 6% as testing ramps up. More testing increases the known infection rate, and as that continues to increase, the death rate will fall. But even with today’s numbers, it is possible that more than 500,000 million people could die in the US. If the number is kept below 300,000, it seems to me that we should be thankful it wasn’t worse. And we should start preparing for the next one, by studying countries/areas that did well.

Third.. the over 2 million deaths number was what the CDC said IF NOTHING WAS DONE. We did a lot, (no thanks to trump, but thanks to our governors and the people) and we still have lost over a quarter of a million people. With 2000 more dying every day. Trump would not even wear a mask, mandate masks, or at the very least, encourage people to do so.
Also .. Trump KNEW how contagious and deadly this was back in january ... but he lied to us for months. **google Bob Woodward's tapes if you dont believe that. Trump did soooooo much wrong and so many people died because of that.
So, could another president have done better? ABSOLUTELY! If you're blinded with some weird loyalty to trump, that's YOUR problem.. but dont BULLSH$$ me.. because I'm informed and I know the difference between a good decent human being who makes occasional mistakes but does his best for the people, and a stupid self-centered pos who doesn't care one bit about any of us.. and that includes you!
