    To those who argue that statues commemorating slavery are a part of one’s historical heritage that should not be denied, yes, but that kind of thing belongs in a museum, like a “slavery memorial museum” or “historical crimes museum”, not in a public place.

      How messed up does someone have to be, to defend something that glorifies an institution that is responsible for starting a civil war and then a century-long reign of terror after they lost? Because white supremacy is "heritage"?

      @tskmaster3837 3 년 전 +11

      To people who say they belong in a museum, I'll say they belong to be dead and buried along with the figures and policies they promote. Not "promoted", promote.
      Not to be remembered, not to be cherished.
      They never should have been made in the first place. Why keep them around then?

    • @jordinagel1184
      @jordinagel1184 3 년 전 +74

      Tskmaster they need to be remembered though. If you do not remember, you will forget. If you forget, it will repeat itself. That’s why here in Germany we are taught so goddamn much about WW2 and the Holocaust, and especially the Weimar Republic with Hitler’s rise to power. Not because we love talking about those topics, but because we know that we need to remember what our forefathers have done, so that we may not make the same mistakes ourselves. We owe it to the victims of those times, German or British, Russian or Jewish, American or Polish, etc. Sadly, Holocaust deniers are once again popping up in Germany; those who were alive at the time are dying off, and those denying individuals have either not received a good education about the Holocaust or have bought into conspiracy theories, now widely circulated due to the internet. This once again shows the importance of remembering history, both the good and (especially!) the bad, because if you’re not careful a relapse might happen faster than you think.

      Such racist feelings never went away, not once in a hundred and fifty years. It's time to stop dividing, time to let go.

    We had a problem with the small police department in my small town. Brutality, corruption evidence theft and cover ups were the norm. The town council shut them down and disbanded the whole department and turned over enforcement to the county. Since then it's been much safer to walk the streets and the crime rate actually went down.

It doesn't even qualify as a brief summary. Exactly what one would expect from a 7 minute interview, as opposed to a 20 minute piece. And nothing was omitted, it's expected. It's in the name, i.e. "defund". It certainly doesn't mean take the fun out of it, but again, that's implied.
      You repeatedly call him a liar and then say you like him? I don't like people that lie, but that's just me.

    • @frankreynolds9930

      @Clark Kent Dude its unrealistic. First there arent enough cops. They have hard time recruiting.
      Then they dont handle single type of case all day. They have to be master of none type of people to get to any situation faster.
      Also unknown mental people are hard to deal with. Police dont know what are their intentions. Some could be violent, others not.
      Instead police should be better trained to handle all types of situation than hiring seperate people for different jobs because it wont work.

Inciting more divisiveness in society from his far removed position, knowing full well the implication of schooling his audience about Indian politics without first acknowledging the British role in it. There's absolutely no need to amplify the role media figures play in this. Eod, this is their bread & butter. I think it is important to realize that a lot of people famous and not are only really examining these issues critically for the first time and they are dense. Also he is a comedian that didn't have the exposure to political/news based comedy that Oliver, Noah, Colbert have sure he uses news for his bits but he doesn't add the information aspect in so it just may be a lack of exposure. When I worked at FedEx Office, I helped people ship their citizenship applications. Someone filing for citizenship has to pay between $300-$800 every month for a undetermined amount of time. Every month, you are required to turn in a application that can be anywhere between 5-50 pages long. If there is one error on your application, you have to file an extension and pay a fee to keep your place in the queue.
    If you miss one single payment, you forfeit your spot in the queue and must start at the back of the line (again, depending on circumstances). I witnessed, firsthand, how stressful this was for many people as well as families.
    Some people were scared.
    Some people were desperate.
    Some people were hopeless.
    All of them, double, triple and even quadruple-checked their application before they sent it off. After witnessing what hoops these people were required to jump through, and what little information they were actually being told by authorities, I have lost so much respect for the immigration process that this country uses, especially for refugees fleeing terrorism in their native countries.
    We need to do better.
    Considering how much America brags about itself, it should have the best processes with the best results. No more excuses, America!

    I was an MP in the Marines and it shocks me how policing in the civilian sector, is more militaristic than it was for me as an actual military policeman. We were taught that we were protecting our brother and sister Marines and their families. We had a "police your neighbor" approach whereas civilian police are trained with an "us against them" mentality, and have been given ordinance and taught tactics used by actual occupying forces.
    There is a laundry list of things we need to do as Americans that perhaps starts with a hard look at the hearts and integrity of all our elected officials rather than their political lean. Accompanied by immediate changes to policing through De-funding, restructuring, and reallocation of resources and responsibilities. In large part because our police are asked to do things, they are neither trained for or equipped to do, but primarily so they can focus on changing the fundamental culture of there order and the permanent removal of those officers who cannot adjust.

    • @potaterjim
      @potaterjim 3 년 전

      To be fair, and to hear all sides, the "us vs them" has a large basis in reality. Unlike policing a base, civilians have no order or structure. Half the time, they're uneducated, undisciplined, and dangerous. Having to deal with nightmare people every day, day in and day out, listening to these barely sentient animal people is enough to crush someone. I think that, more than racism, is what really turns cops bad. They see the worst of humanity every day, and lose sight of what they're really supposed to be doing. They're forced to play babysitter, only the children are oftentimes bigger than them, and oftentimes extremely dangerous.
      But you're absolutely right in that the "us vs them" thing is an absolutely terrible way to go about it. It does _nothing_ to stop the problem, it only encourages it. It turns the entire thing into a war. And police officers aren't trained to be soldiers. Or mental health workers, or babysitters, yet they're asked to be all of those things. I think they need the training to manage those things. They need a more intensive entry regimen that focuses on weeding out the ones who can't make it, and preparing the ones who can for the crap they're about to deal with on the regular. I think they need regular wellness checks, to make sure that they're still fit, and to get them the help that they need, when they need it, so that when they're at their breaking point, there's a system in place to make sure they're taken care of _before_ they take it out on some dumb, unlucky punk.

      Tomáš Vorel I don’t disagree with you. I didn’t say that we can change everybody’s mind not to be racist. What I mean is that right now people around the world are outraged and horrified about what has been happening for years and demand a change in our system. This presents a real chance for something to actually change, in form of law, police reform etc. but only if this movement continues and not in two weeks time, when the media coverage lessens and the first shock is over everyone just forgets about it and goes back to normal like we have done every other time. These events have already changed many people’s minds simply because they were made aware of issues and unintentional contributions to the problem that they didn’t think much about before. But the goal is not to change EVERYBODY’S mind. There’ll always be racists, Donald Trump will always be racist. The goal is to get the issue of systemic racism to a point were it gets taken so seriously, that even people like him who are in power will agree to change laws and make reforms for the simple reason that the public outrage will not stop until they do. Which is exactly what defunding is meant to aim. It's shittily worded, they don't mean to give the police less money, they mean to give them less workload. So that they don't get to the point of someone doing something he's totally unfit to to do.
      I just hope that they don't stop there, and they they put more money back _into_ the system, in three categories: filtering, training, and support.
      When people join up, there needs to be a strict, rigorous, Full Metal Jacket style bootcamp, to weed out the people who can't cut it. They're going to be enduring abuse and awful human beings every day. We can't afford to have people who let it get to them, out there on the streets.
      After that, they need rigorous training to be able to deal with that. Not just physical, but psychological and emotional training, on how to deal with being used as a punching bag every day by your clientele: namely, drunk assholes. The tools they need to excel at their job doesn't end at a gun and a fancy chokehold maneuver.
      And lastly, a proper support line. Psychologists to check on them, a community support to comfort them. So that at the end of the day, they aren't on their own with all this mental baggage, they have a safe and healthy outlet to vent. And trained professionals can monitor their health, and make the call if someone needs to take a vacation, or a desk job, or retire early.

    I recommend folks look up the 9 principles of policing, advocated by Sir Robert Peel, the first head of the Metropolitan Police of London, back in 1829, often referred to as the "Peelian Principles". (Sir Robert is why the London police acquired the nickname "Bobbies"). One's first inclination at this suggestion is to think "1829? Surely it must be a dumber, and more brutal notion of policing than we have today!". But you read through them, and that easy dismissal soon turns into deep respect and wondering why we can't have that today, and what the hell happened over the last 190 years that things went so terribly wrong.
    As for "defunding", I think folks need a different slogan or label, like "re-imagining police" or "reinventing police".

      And yeah, that's the sad thing about history. We keep thinking "Oh, we're so much smarter than we were fifty years ago!" when in reality, we seem to keep making all the same mistakes, over and over again, when people have addressed issues many times over the years.
      Hell, let's take a look at the infamous USSR. They're another great example. Russia is sick of being run by a greedy institution that forces them onto the streets and hoards all their wealth while treating them like shit. So they get up in arms, they behead the snake, and decide "Alright, this time we'll do it better!"
      And what do they do? They install a greedy, _paranoid_ institution that hoards all their wealth, treats them like shit, _AND_ throws disconsenters into gulags. There was a terrific article in The Atlantic in 2018, that pitched the view that the role of any POTUS, as it has emerged over the years, is actually too much for a single person, and that the duties incumbent on the POTUS have accumulated and expanded over the years such that *nobody* can be "good at" the job. It was a very illuminating piece regarding the things that prior presidents did NOT do and were not expected to do. It wasn't pitched as any sort of excuse for the current POTUS; more like a reason why a) one now needs truly committed and capable people in the job, given how the role has expanded, b) maybe the role needs to be divvied up among multiple associate presidents or multiple vice-presidents in some formal way, and c) maybe our expectations need to be dialed back a bit.
      In any event, I mention this because a similar sort of thing has happened to policing over the years. Fifty years back, walking the beat meant more "Move it along, buddy" directed at vagrants, and less attention to overdosing in the homeless, mental health, and domestic violence. Some of that difference may well be reflective of INdifference, insomuch as things like mental health issues and domestic violence is not exactly what you'd call a "new problem"; we simply ignored it previously. But whatever the reasons for the difference, the role of police has expanded well beyond the capabilities, training, and role of many of its members. Time to consider re-allocation of responsibilities and associated funding. You can't address all those things that make citizens unsafe and insecure with billy clubs, tasers, and tear gas.

    Just the fact that most people are nervous when they see the police and not comforted by the sight even when they are doing nothing wrong should be a clue that the police system needs reform in a major way.
    Good people who are there to protect you should not inspire fear.

    • @potaterjim
      @potaterjim 3 년 전 +1

      They have a license to kill. People aren't nervous because they've done something, they're nervous because it doesn't _matter_, what matters is if the _police_ think they did, because the civilian has no power to resist the officer whatsoever. In fact, the mere attempt of preserving your rights or safety is a crime. How horrifically twisted is that? The act of rebellion is illegal. So what happens when injustice occurs? Who watches the watchmen? It's a "comply first, seek justice later" system. Except justice is _also_ their department. So there's this looming threat that can literally take you off the street and destroy your life on a whim. And we have them _just in case_ some one is doing something naughty, as defined by _them._ Oh yeah, they come with the added benefit that you can call them to help you when you're being wronged: Except, they wont defend you from most people because "It's a civil matter" (and they'll haul you away for fixing the problem yourself), if they _do_ come out, it's _after_ the person has escaped, and nine times out of ten they can't do anything about it, because they can't be expected to find one guy with a stolen purse in the middle of a city, can they?
      So yeah, no shit people are nervous around police. I'd be nervous of a giant, slavering guard dog skulking around town looking for someone to maul too.

    Bottom line: If you have to keep explaining a slogan, get another slogan.
    While I totally agree that police depts across the country must make deep changes in how they see and treat non-whites and that coming up to performance standards should affect the Federal & State funds they receive, the "Defund the Police" movement with its poorly thought out slogan is not the best way to accomplish this. And this movement isn't even addressing the HUGE changes that must take place within the entire U.S. criminal justice system....the most egregious one being: "money will get you justice." If you're poor & incarcerated, your chances of being fairly treated from being arrested to sentencing to how much time someone does in prison is patently inequitable. If someone has money, they can get less time or get out of serving time altogether. Why? Because they can afford a good lawyer. Police funding or "defunding" movement is an important issue, whose idea means well, but is a misnomer & only one of the major issues facing our huge system of criminal justice/injustice in this country that only BEGINS with policing.

    Glad that John Oliver is using his platform to make this issue visible and more understood by the mainstream, but it would also be best practice to have an expert on abolitionism share their expertise. Many Black activists have been on the front lines of this issue for decades -- just one organisation that comes to mind is Critical Resistance. There are many organisations that need our support and need to be involved in the policy and decision-making surrounding phasing out policing. I understand that this was just a brief segment of a larger interview, however if this is a topic that talk shows want to seriously engage with, let's also make a serious and long-term effort to amplify the voices of activists, experts, and those on the front lines, as opposed to comedians and celebrities (albeit politically conscious ones). This can take many forms, but overall is a vital reminder that those of us who are new to abolition movements or who are working to challenge our white privilege need to engage with. We may be late to catch up with them, but the foundations and knowledge behind these movements have been around for quite some time.

Also this will give so many people jobs if they're putting in place programs that are centered around mental health, while also improving our mental health crisis(but the overall scope of it still needs tweaking because it's so ludicrous on how impossible it is to get insured, find a specialist, and etc.).
