Do YOU use "box dye" to color your hair at home?
Are you a hair stylist that hates the idea of clients using DIY hair colour?!
Well, in this video I share my thoughts on why home hair color isn't as BAD as lots of folks think it is.
And I take you around the drug store, (that's a chemist in the UK) to have a look at whats GOOD and what should perhaps be avoided...?
I share my 37 years of knowledge as a hairstylist and hair colourist/educator, to help take the FEAR out of hair color for home use.
SPOILER ALERT - Some of them are GREAT and you might be surprised to hear, very similar to what's used in the salon.
Do you have a hair colour question? Remember, I reply to ALL your comments and whilst I can't give out specific hair colour formulas without seeing you, I'm happy to help as much as possible.
What other videos would you like to see in this series? Please let me know in the comments...?

Hi there, thanks for watching! This is NOT a space to be mean and negative about hair proโs, PLEASE be respectful. ๐จ๐ป๐๐ปโ
In my opinion, home colour is perfect as long as you don't want to change your natural colour more than two tones, especially two tones lighter. Also, people who colour their hair at home should take into account the fact that,in order to avoid too much pigment deposit in lengths and ends, which render the colour rather "opaque", must only apply the dye on their roots when retouching and if they want to add shine and some colour to the rest of the hair, best thing is using a colour mask in a similar tone after the dye application.
@@keanux Hi there, thanks for watching and sharing your insight.
I would definitely use the salon if I could afford it to support local businesses but at the moment I don't even afford to dye my hair, not that it matters I like my own hair colour too.
@@teijaflink2226 I totally understand. Lots of us are feeling it eh?! And good for you!
โ@theworldofcraig Hiya ๐๐ป just discovered your channel and already love it! How likely is someone to have a serious reaction if they've always dyed their hair for years but then hasn't for a few years? If they do a patch test as well of course ๐
I sat in a chair for 3 hours every 4 weeks for 25 years until Covid. I was scared to death to color my own hair, let alone use box color having been humiliated in the past. I finally gave in, and the results were wonderful! I was very relieved I matched the color. Not only that I could do it in the privacy of my own home. No awkward conversations, no longer a victim of being triple booked. It was a revelation and quite empowering. The last time I sat in a chair I was chided for using box color while he gave me a very unfitting mom cut that took months to grow out. That was 2 years ago and I now cut my own hair too, finally looking how I want to look.
Thanks for watching, so glad youโve found what works for you.
Some of us donโt triple book and are brilliant at making folks feel comfortableโฆ.
Itโs brilliant you got fantastic results!
This! When I do my own hair I always get what I want. When I go to a stylist, I usually get talked out of what I want and leave with the same boring trim -_-
@@elisabethscott20 Then youโve not found the right stylistโฆ.yet!
In my area, I don't know who's training them but I'm yet to come across a stylist that can actually do a one length cut. I went to college a couple of years ago to train as a hairdresser as its something I've always wanted to do. On a Monday we had the theory and a quick demo for 30 minutes which we were expected to remember for the Thursday. The tutor on the Thursday evening spent most of the time sat on the computer doing her admin stuff. She would quickly pop round to check on us and that was it. Week 3 we had clients and my client was so hacked off because when I went to wash her hair, the water was stone cold. Everyone else's clients were hacked off too. My client said to me, they don't seem bothered about training you all properly. I said to them, I know and said that's why nearly everyone in my area leaves the salons with a naff hair style/colour because they just seem to pass everyone regardless to their competence. I quit the course after a couple of months because it was a complete waste of time. I was so disappointed and its such a shame because people attend the courses with high expectations but leave feeling so deflated. I just wish I knew of a decent academy that trained people properly within the profession.
My story exactly ๐
I have lots of clients who home colour, some of them are a lovely colour, i even tell them. Dont judge, not everyone can afford to have it done by a professional. I'm just glad the're in my chair โค
GO TRICIA! Iโm with you on that one, Iโm done with the demonisation of home productsโฆ.and grateful youโre here following along. ๐จ๐ป๐๐ปโจ
I dye my own hair because it takes 3 box dyes to do it. Just the thought of how much it would cost me to go to the hairdresser to do my hair feels like it would break my bank. The only time I paid a stylist for a dye job was for my wedding. It was over $300 at the cheapest salon in the U.S. at the time, Fantastic Sams.
@@darcichambers6184Hi Darci, thanks for watching. So glad youโve found a home solution to having great hair!
I can afford the salon and hate salons.. so I have used box dyes.
@@MelancholyRomanticWell, Iโm really glad youโve found a solution that works for you.
I was buying a lipstick at a salon, I heard a stylist very loudly humiliating a woman for coloring her hair at home. It was a small crowded salon, I almost told her off.
Unfortunately some folks think it gives the โpowerโ to be mean about home colour. Gee.
Odd the lady wouldn't have gotten up and left, I sure would have. She was obviously there for a service, not to be berated.
The worst bullying I've ever had in my life (and I grew up queer in the midwest of the U.S. so...) was at a London hair salong, a stylist trying to bully me into a dye job I could not afford. I'd just gone in there for the free lemonade and consultation and I wound up leaving in tears! Some people should just not be in jobs working with customer service...
@@cinemaocd1752 Sorry you had that experience.
I would just keep doing what makes her happy. Follow the money?

@@lorideane5968 Iโm with you on that one Lori ๐จ๐ป๐๐ปโจ
My home box dying is ALWAYS perfect. It NEVER was in any hair salon.
I hear you. You never get the colour you want. It's always what the stylists want to do. They're also, really insistent on highlights and don't seem to want to do a full head of colour. I ended up with a huge stripe down the left hand side of my hair too which was really noticeable when I washed my hair and dryed it myself. The colour also came out a lot too after the first couple of washes. I even got red in it which I didn't want or ask for. Its horrible.
I color my hair at home because I've been bullied too many times by hair dressers. Every time I find a good one who understands my hair, they leave! ( one left to work at a funeral home because "dead people don't complain!). I reasearch, research, research EVERYTHING about the products I
I use. I'm so glad I found your chanel. Btw, I'm 67 years old and still working.,so I want to look somewhat good, not dead๐. Thank you for your kindness to box dye users

I can afford a stylist to cut and color my hair; however, after many disappointing haircuts and colors, I took matters into my own hands. For the last six years, I have cut and colored my hair. My hair has never looked better; a woman recently said your hair looks straight out of a hair ad. She was shocked that I didn't go to a professional to have my hair look this good. The bottom line is just because someone went to school and trained to become a hairstylist does not mean they have natural talent. I am naturally talented in the hair and makeup department and rely on natural skills. I have paid hundreds of dollars to have my hair cut properly, and I always left unsatisfied. I went to the "best of the best," so to speak, and was left disappointed. I go to Sally's and use the Wella Demi hair color. I will sometimes even highlight my hair, and it looks fantastic. Don't let anyone make you feel bad for what you use on your hair. It's your head, not theirs.

I use supermarkets hair dyes, I donโt go to boots and pay ยฃ3/4 more just for the pleasure of being in boots. I had colour done from stylists and the only difference I see is the very good conditioners that you have access to. I have only had ONE great hair cut from a salon that I loved and it was by a black woman. Unfortunately, when I went back she had moved to another town. All of the rest of the time my hair cuts have been horrible. I remember going to a hair salon because I wanted to look good for a first date. I told her to only cut an inch and she cut 4 inches. I left the salon bawling my eyes out. I also learned how to cut my own hair at home too.

Not โdemonisingโ home hair colour has kept them loyal to us. Even telling them where they might have missed a bit or given them application advice also helps.
We also had our client use Casting Crรจme during Covid, we advised on shades and had no colour โcorrectionsโ when we reopened, and the clients were happy they they didnโt have to look at grey hair in the mirror. Win win for us all.

I am a colorist as well with over 35 yrs behind the chair. I found this video to be soooo refreshing because I agree with 100% of what you said esp your final words about never making a person/client feel badly about using box color. I do often hear my colleagues blame anything that comes out badly for them on the client using box color when in fact we as professionals should know how to deal with that. Blame yourself not the client. And truth be told, on a Sunday night when our supply stores are closed, if I decide I've got to do my color this minute, I've used many different box colors and had great results. There was a time when I was younger and I could not afford going to a salon so box color was my only option. I would never judge or make anyone feel badly for that choice. Your kindness, understanding, and outright honesty is impressive and you have gained yourself a new subscriber. Much love and happy coloring.

No hairdresser should guilt trip you for using box dye. Thatโs extremely wrong. Please seek a salon thatโll treat you well, if you want to get it done professionally now. I had to search for quite some time but now I finally have a hairdresser whoโs really good. I just made an appointment for my teen daughter, who has auburn box dye on her hair thatโs grown out quite a bit now and my hairdresser only explained the options we have to either grow it out and blend it with a shadow root or low lights or continue dyeing it. She didnโt judge my daughter at all.

thank you for bringing up the anxiety other than money problems of going to the salon! I'm very iffy about who touches anywhere near my head because it just makes my anxiety spike, so I've been cutting and dying my own hair at home for over 5 years now.
what I do wish tho is for more semi permanent color options to be available in my region, I'm getting tired of only really seeing the 4 shades of LIVE semi permanent dyes (red, pink, blue, purple) and having the limitations of mixing my own shades due to lack of yellow in stock of any of my local or wider area stores. it's also quite difficult finding a lightener product that won't absolutely wreck my hair (last year I bleached my hair to platinum using a very strong one by I believe loreal and my wavy/loose curly hair has not yet recovered it's natural texture, thankfully my hair grows quick and I keep it somewhat short anyway)
it's a lot of alchemy and educating myself on how different products work to better achieve the results I want while keeping the hair still on my head xD
I have recently found out where on the packaging they list what volume the developer is tho! and I take that as an achievement
Well, Iโm so pleased I can help, thanks for watching and sharing your insightโฆI totally understand.

I've used box colors and more professional colors from beauty supply shops and haven't noticed a huge difference in quality. my hair actually feels healthier after I use a box color sometimes. The secret is in the amonia %. 3% is the least damaging and comes in a plastic bottle which must be shaken well before each use. Using a good quality colour from hair supply shop like L'Oreal is probably the way to go. Use up to 3 colours for a good shade using varying amounts of each, half tsp to a tsp, mixed together with the amonia till it is a very soft creamy consistency. This video has given me the confidence to continue to colour my hair but cutting curly shortish hair is difficult to get right. Having the right set of mirrors would help. When I was growing up we had a dressing table set with two movable side ones allowing a view of back aswell. ๐ ๐ข๐

Both myself and my clients are BIG fans of the sprays, so GOOD.
I have been colouring my hair for years. I always use a light medium brown. Many years ago I started using Root Touch up. It stops that darker over dyed ends look. Since I found my first gray hair when I was 16, I am an experienced home-dyer ๐. I used to buy box-dyes until I found a shop where I could buy professional dye. The fun part was that I could mix my own shade. I picked a natural tone that was close to my "average" colour (so more gray hairs -> lighter shade), and mixed in a tiny bit of red to make it a bit more exciting. Worked excellent. Some people had no idea it was not my natural colour, that was my goal, so I was very happy!
Now beautiful gray hair. I am 52, stopped dyeing my hair 10-15 years ago (just before gray hair became fashionable).
Love your hair โjourneyโ! Thanks for sharing.

My experience with hairdressers started at 15 with a perm. It was the 80s. I ended up with an Afro! I used to have straight hair. My hair was so burnt I had to cut all and was left with 2cm long hair!
It did not improve much from there. I have had so many disasters both in Paris and London Salons that I eventually took matters into my own hands. I colour and cut my hair myself since 2018. My hair is great and not burnt or destroyed by colour badly applied or for too long by hapless hairdressers! I also had cuts so bad I had to go back home fix the cut myself and on one occasion wear a hat for few months, despite just asking for a trim and showing picture for safety. It was horrendous and no one will ever touch my hair again, cheap or expensive. ๐
So glad youโve found what works for you. Thanks for sharing.

I would love to see you do a video on natural home hair colours, I use Naturigin & would be interested to see your opinion on it & other so called 'natural' hair colours.
And thank you for watching and for your kindness.
Iโll add natural hair colours to the list. ๐จ๐ปโจ
Coloured mynown hair for YEARS using castings... loved it.
Brilliant!
Iโve been dyeing my own hair at home for years. There have been a couple of instances in the past when Iโve paid a small fortune to get it done in a salon and theyโve messed up my hair so I stuck to doing it myself. Even though it was often patchy, I didnโt mind messing up my own hair so much as it was a lot cheaper!
Over the past few years Iโve been bleaching it, and I recently had to stop as Iโd developed dermatitis on my scalp and the bleach was irritating it. There was a lot of trial and error trying to get my ends the same colour as my roots! (My hair is naturally dark/dirty blonde though Iโm starting to get a few greys). I initially used the Bleach London Super Natural kit which faded fairly quickly and gave my hair a slight green tinge in places (which was something I was already cautious about and the product info claimed wouldnโt happen). Then I tried their Instant Coffee colour which was slightly better but not worth the money in my opinion.
I then tried Josh Woodโs 7.5 shade. I was sceptical as I could see no difference in the before & after shades on the box (I bought it online and if Iโd seen the box up close I probably wouldnโt have bought it, especially as itโs a lot more expensive than box dyes Iโve used in the past), but it turned out great. It perfectly matches my natural colour and covers my greys, and Iโll definitely be buying it again.
Edited to add that the last time I had my hair cut (it was a couple of months ago and just before I started using the Josh Wood dye), the hairdresser told me she was impressed that my hair was in such great condition, especially considering Iโd been bleaching it at home for years.

I buy Revlon box dye black, I only used the color and buy my own cream developer 10v. Because I noticed cream box developer is very harsh for my hair it makes it thin and box doesn't say what cream developer volume number is and black only needs low 10 volume developer. You don't need and expensive box developer dye Revlon is great under $4 bucks once a month and 10 volume cream developer at a beauty supply is less than 10 dollars and last for maybe 1 year. So I mixed color 2oz with 2 oz cream 10 volume developer. 1 hair stylists gave me this recommendation and it has work for me fo so long no hair damage. So box hair dye trick is don't use cream developer inside due to unknown number volume for black 10v, for light brown or red 20v. For blond go to a hair salon ๐ because 30v or 40v might damage hair I only stick with dark colors ๐
Thanks for watching and sharing your insight.
Thanks for the tip!
I have used box dyes for years and the colours are great. A lot of box dyes do have a lots of metallics in which can cause a problem in removing them and can damage your hair. Go for a good quality box dye and read whatโs in the dye. I found this video very informative

Here, we have a national chain of beauty supply stores called Sally where one can buy a certain amount of professional hair supplies, including toners, developers, masks/conditioners. I do my own color, including bleaching with 2nd stage toners. Only once have I seriously damaged my hair. I have my hair nearly white at the m๐moment which looks fabulous. LโOrรฉal Nutrisse hair conditioner is amazing ( you get enough for 2 maybe 3 uses ) I would love for them to make a big bottle you could buy separately. @@theworldofcraig Yes, the Nutrisse conditioner is incredible. I've also wished they made a bigger one but sadly they don't. (Any advice on a conditioner with similar ingredients would be much appreciated as I've tried lots of expensive conditioner over the years and this is still one of the best things I've ever used.) The Nutrisse is also better at lifting than it says on the box; if you leave on for the maximum time (and up to 5 mins longer) you can lift by three levels rather than two. It's also one of the few permanent dyes that doesn't smell horrible or make my scalp itch and the colour is quite multi-tonal. I am a big fan. This is wonderful to see! Iโve had a long history of both dying and cutting at home, and having both great and terrible results, but also going to salons and coming out elated or devastated with the result.
At the moment Iโm doing my own hair for financial reasons, and itโs turning out great, but when I can afford it Iโd love to go to a salon again - mostly for the pampering experience!
And your kindness is wonderful, thank you and thanks for sharing your insight.
The only issues I have with box dye is that you never know what volume developer you are getting and you don't know what kind of pigment load it has. That can be easily circumvented by testing and experimenting so you get to know the brands. Either way beauty supply stores like Sally Beauty here in the USA contain brands like ION and Wella where you can get your color and developer separately. I always recommend those to people who want to color their own hair instead of box kits, as they are also easier and cheaper when customizing a formula ๐
Hi there, thanks for watching and sharing your insight. I agree on the peroxide frontโฆand hereโs to testing and experimenting! ๐จ๐ป๐๐ปโจ
Sally's stores are few and far between in the UK for some reason. Its not that easy for us to get professional hair dyes, but box dyes are everywhere.
@@fightthefairy Thatโs surprising to me. Not even on Amazon can you find them? Ion and Wella colorcharm are like loose box dye brands and there are more of them. They can be bought from Amazon in the USA as well.
I have used box dye on a many an occasion and the only problem I have found with it, is when I have only bought one box and I needed two because my hair is longer than I anticipated. That is my problem not the box dyes, so since I realised that I buy two boxes instead of one. Often I watch certain hair people on here, who cast a snobbish comment at anyone who uses box dye which annoys me so much. I do not live near a Sally Beauty so I will visit my local Superdrug or Boots. I cannot afford to visit a salon, I don't need the snidey attitude and so if I get bored with my hair, I will use box dye. Thank you for remembering that we are all different, we have different budgets and frankly many seem to forget that we have feelings.
Hi there, thanks for watching and sharing your insight - great call on buying 2 lots, more is always better with application.

Thank you so much for the informative vid, and for not demonizing home hair colour. I've had some brilliant stylists in the past, ones I visited for years, but either they moved, I moved, or worse (my last great stylist died, may she RIP). However, for every good stylist I've had, there have been a handful of bad ones. Because I educate myself about colouring my dark hair to medium blond, I know the basics of levels, colour wheels, etc. One stylist I visited after I did a box dye that turned out too dark (about a level 6) thought she could lighten the shade by putting a level 10 colour on top. I told her I didn't think that would do much. She ended up turning my hair greenish without any lightening effect and charged me full price for the botched job. She may have been good at cutting and styling hair but had absolutely zero idea or training or even self-education about colour, although her bio claimed she had 10 years experience. Of course, on top of it she chastised me about colouring my own hair. When I brought my concerns to the salon owner, she ignored my message. The result was spending about $700 total and 2 visits to another salon to correct the colour (no way I was going back to the first salon). It's been a couple of years since then and I've now learned to do my own foils, toning, money pieces, the whole nine yards. I get compliments on my colour all the time, and it costs me 1/10 what I would pay in a salon. I use a pricey Schwarzkopf Blondme bleach, 10 developer for slow lift, Castings box dye, and Olaplex. I tone once a week with a vinegar, cold water, food colour rinse. My hair has never been healthier and my wallet definitely loves it. I still go to the stylist for cut/trim a couple of times a year but I don't think I'll spend half a paycheck on colour ever again.
You are most welcome, thank you for watching and for your kind words, much appreciated.
And thanks for sharing your hair โjourneyโ, sounds like you really know your stuff and good for you!
A hair professional messed up my color many times. I finally gave up on her.
Sorry to hear that, thanks for watching.
I'm coloring my own hair for 30 years. The times I decided to let a professional give it a go, like after my pregnancy when my roots had grown out a lot, I regretted. The technician messed up the color, gave me a really bad brassy color when I specifically asked for a cool toned no 4 brown. I already have a cool toned brown color but I have greys since my early 20's . She even argued that it's impossible to get the color I ask because it's not a natural color, as in it doesn't exist in nature. As if pink and blue hair exist in nature ๐ ... It happened a few more times with professionals basically giving me brassy hair. I just went back to box dye, no 4 . It's always a success, lots of pigment without red hues or fading after a couple of shampooing my hair.
Do box dyes say what volume developer is in there? Also, I think calling something โno bleach bleachโ is misleading because it gives the impression itโs โsafeโ, but the volume of developer could be super high for all anyone knows and that can potentially cause a lot of damage. PS. Iโm so happy I found you on KRplus! I followed you on Instagram years ago but I ended up deleting Insta because I was sick of it ๐คฃ

As a person who has seldom used coloring in her hair (and now over 70), I found your information very helpful. Like many others, the cost to have professionally applied colour would be over my budget. However, I am considering using a product by L'oreal called gloss toner. Thought this kind of treatment might offer a boost & shine to my hair (fading copper) as we all feel like we need a lift from time to time!. Thank you sharing your research with us and I greatly enjoyed your video.

You are a lovely gentleman and I very much enjoyed this video! I recently tried John Frieda Go Blonder Spray instead of heading back to the hairdresser for highlights. I have medium blond hair naturally. I was concerned that I might end up with an orange result but instead this peroxide based spray gave me a nice light gold blonde highlight. I applied it in thin sections and combed through from root to tip and then blow dried. It lightened very gradually and after several applications (I applied it over a week, each time I washed my hair until I finished the product) the color is as light as I had hoped and looks amazing! The condition of my hair is silky and shiny, not dry or brittle as it was with bleach highlights. I'm so glad I tried it!

I've been using L'Orรฉal' Excellence Creme brand shade 8 for several years and have been very happy with it. I just wish they'd make the very same conditioner they put in the dye box to be available to be bought separately., too. Those conditioners are so much better for my hair than any other expensive product.
Youโre most welcome, glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching and your kindness.
Look for conditioners (there are plenty in the drug store) with dimethicone in the ingredients - they all contain a lot of it, it gives the hair โslipโโฆ.and itโs NOT a bad thing!
Great video! I think itโs worth mentioning that as there are so many great box dyes itโs very unclear on what level the developer is
Iโve heard itโs usually even 30vol which can be excessive and I damaged my hair that way but I was very ignorant back then and dyed my hair like every week because the ginger faded and I didnโt like it
But other than that I had a good experience with box dye, nothing is wrong with dyeing your hair at home ๐
Especially that there are so many terrible hairdressers out there (I recently had my hair botched by one) so sometimes the advice- just go to the salon can be very scary and risky
Thank you and thanks for watching.
Itโs impossible to say what level of peroxide is in home colour - depositing pigment would use a lower volume for sure.
I think itโs unfair to say โso many terribleโฆโ - sure, there are folks that would benefit from more knowledge and better communication skills but letโs not forget hairdressing is a career many are super passionate about and generalising could hurt someoneโs feelings.
Many thanks for this helpful information. I have been struggling with paying almost $400 to get my dark hair coloured semi-permanently because I am now blessed with a smattering of grey which just comes through far too fast to be able to accept that kind of monetary outlay every month! Permanent colouring isn't an option either as I'd just have the same problem with the roots. I'm now of the opinion that home colouring is my best option but have been far too nervous to go down this route after hearing horror stories from my hairdresser and also reading them online. This video has given me the push to see how it goes after being a salon-only user for decades.
One question for you. I live in Australia so I don't know if this is the same in the UK but we can buy individual (big brand) products eg colour, developer etc. from hair and beauty stores and I wondered what the pros and cons are of that option rather than a 'box' off the shelf?
Youโre most welcome, so glad it helped - there is a recent video full of tips on how to get the best results when colouring your own hair here on my channel.
So there really is no difference in product as such, itโs more than the โbox dyeโ is pre formulated and some pro colour might need a โmixโ of shades if youโre covering grey etc etc. More developed formula in pro colour will cost more, just as more sophisticated home colour does.
Let me know how you get on. ๐จ๐ป๐๐ปโจ
