    Root beer used to be sold as a "cure-all" so linking it to medicine isn't entirely unreasonable. Apparently it used to be called root tea, but was changed to beer to appeal to the working classes.
    In Taiwan we have a beverage called Hey Song Sarsaparilla (黑松沙士), which is basically root beer. I didn't link the two until someone pointed out to me that sarsaparilla is literally the ingredient that gives root beer that unique taste.

    I can see why people would think of medicine--the flavors in root beer are often really herbal. My favorite brand (Virgil's) lists anise, licorice, vanilla, cinnamon, clove, wintergreen, sweet birch, molasses and nutmeg on the current label, and I'm pretty sure also used to list juniper. Sassafrass (the root that originally flavored root beer) extract can be liver-damaging or carcinogenic if not processed properly so most brands either leave it out or use an artificial replacement flavoring. There are a couple of root beers out there that use sassafrass extract with the carcinogenic compound removed.

    • @GCLU
      @GCLU 3 년 전 +2

      I think I hate Dr. Pepper for the same reason. I like Root beer also, just AW is terrible. Virgil's/Saranac/Boylan's are my preference.

    • @mlissa3232
      @mlissa3232 3 년 전 +2

      Omg I love Virgils, I was thinking about it the entire time when I watched this! I wonder how Koreans would react to a more high end brand. I don't even really care for A&W anymore, it tastes so artificial in comparison.

    • @roguechevelle
      @roguechevelle 3 년 전

      I think Virgil's is probably the best root beer but some places don't carry it. I think A&W and Barq's root beer are the most popular brands but if I have to chose between the two I'd chose Barq's over A&W any day (I think A&W does taste like medicine because of so much artificial flavors).

  • @RobynLashbrookMusic

    This is literally my favorite soda. Also in USA, our medicine patches don’t smell like root beer, they smell of peppermint/spearmint so we don’t make that connection when smelling it.

    • @EmmaAppleBerry
      @EmmaAppleBerry 3 년 전 +6

      Yeah menthol so its like a suuuuper strong mint where it doesnt even really smell like mint more just smells fresh.
      But our mint flavoured food even the extrastrong powdery mints arent as strong because its like using a small bit of essence so they smell minty and are often paired with something so its not pure mint like in the garden or an extract.
      I mean our toothpaste is mint but its that non edible mint smell thats more chalky and doesnt make you hungry like a mint slice would i defs think theres a very strong distinction between mint smells like toothpaste is salty mint medical stuff like ice gel is like a alcohol antiseptic mint which smells of menthol and not edible mint and then food mint is often not that strong and often either cold like in icecream which dulls the smell or its with something else like chocolate so its rarely plain mint i mean even mint leaves in water are just a nice hint of soft mint flavour and taste more cool and fresh then particularly minty and gum is like a chewy specific mint taste as well. I think the issue for koreans or asians in general have only every smelt the sarsaparilla root beer sassafrass smell in medicine whereas weve got mint as a super common flavour throughout literally everything so we dont strongly associate it with one thing so even if you have medicine that smells like mint it wouldnt put you off mint foods like they said and like dave said he wasnt put off toot beer when he smelled medicine he thought the medicine smelled yummy.

    Idk why I loved this so much but I did. Watched this with my mom and we were both laughing. Root Beer is called root beer because it used to be made of the sassafras root and is drafted like beer, just non-alcoholic.
    That medicinal taste is the type of mint they use when making it. Root Beer and Coke used to be used to make taking medicines more palatable. You could go to the pharmacy and get sodas with your medicine like at a bar and drink it.
    I grew up on root beer and it's still my favorite soda. But I'm from Utah so the reason it's so popular for kids and Utahns is that it doesn't have caffeine in it.
    I wish I was in Korea and could guest on Dave's videos because so many things he talks about being normal for how he grew up ate totally different from Utah and I think it would be really funny to talk about lol. I love these videos so much.

    My husband and best friend happen to be Korean and they both have told me that when they tried root beer for the first time, they hated it for the same reason of it tasting and smelling like medicine. Obviously, they got over that fact eventually and actually enjoy it now, lol. They also said something similar about the taste of cheese, surprisingly. However, it wasn't because cheese reminded them of something they shouldn't eat but rather, cheese was just an incredibly foreign taste and texture that they have never experienced before. Once again though, they got over the initial shock and grew to love the ever-living crap out of cheese 😂 😂
