Americans are the ones that are making the "subtitles thing" a problem, growing up in a non-english speaking country it is very normal to watch movies with subs on, also anime is really popular and also there is not much choice. Americans whining because this is not "made for them" is really annoying. The world doesn't go around you. Please understand that once and for all. the subtitle thing has always been hilarious to me, like i'm british and was born in london, but i watch even english shows with subtitles. you miss less content like that, don't need to have the volume up at a ridiculous level, and it improves your reading speed in general. i literally had no idea people had such an issue with subtitles until i saw american's freaking about parasite

@@FunSoSoToTo see technically bengali would have been my first language since my parents couldn't speak english. maybe that's one of the good things about being asian but born in the west - i got to experience both cultures. i grew up watching bollywood films with subtitles, so other subtitled films have never been an issue. grew up listening to algerian music, spanish music, arab music, so kpop wasn't a stretch either.
people just need to get over their fear of other languages, and get over their belief that english is in any way superior.

I’ve NEVER understood the big deal about subtitles. The argument that if a person had to read subtitles, they might as well get a book never made sense to me. Is it so bad to read a couple of lines? What’s so bothersome about reading? We can all benefit from reading more anyway, especially in America.
Not to mention most of the time the dubs are terrible and, more often than not, the meaning of the film gets lost in translation, so that takes away from the film. And as Dave mentioned, subtitles give you access to so much more content that you normally wouldn’t get. Subtitles also help with learning other languages and getting comfortable with other languages. You got to be a pretty narcissistic person to think the only knowing language worth knowing is English and you’re too good to even read it.
Lol I would never watch a movie that got dubbed to my language, it just sounds not correct. Besides seeing the mouth movement not match with the sound, I'd rather read lines
Well, personally I love subtitles, but a lot of the complaints I hear have to do with how fast they flash across the screen. Not everyone can read that fast. Plus, it's hard to read subtitles and watch the action at the same time. Besides, English movies get dubbed into French, Spanish, and German so I don't see why it's on;y Americans who get picked on!
like with many seemingly irrational behavior like the hate towards subtitles, I think there is an underlying real, rational reason (real and rational does not equal legitimate or exonerating, mind). I honestly think a lot of Americans find reading to be intellectually taxing. There are probably a lot of Americans that spend a lot of time without reading and writing that much. They would never admit it, of course, but the subtitles are probably overwhelming for them, especially since it has to match the pace of spoken dialogue so can require fast reading. I also think a lot of Americans like to tell themselves no one else in the world matters, and foreign films disrupt that fantasy. Again, at the root of this is a sense of fear and insecurity that leads them to think unknown/foreign = scary instead of unknown/foreign = exciting opportunity to learn something new.
Watching a movie with a dubbed language is the standard in localization. If you walk into a theater watching a foreign film that was filmed different to the country's native language, you will almost certainly watch the film redubbed to appease international audiences.
There is nothing wrong with preferring dubs, and it's a pretty common preference. Dave is being a real asshole here honestly; trying to spin it as if it's xenophobic to watch a film where people speak in your native language. These videos are only creating hatred for America and Americans, and it's really disappointing seeing as how South Korea is one of the US's closest allies.

And hearing this straight from a native South Korean, the country's army is garbage compared to the US's. I grew up as a bilingual kid who would watch Bollywood all the time with subtitles. And then, I started to watch subbed anime, and kdramas, kpop, and Turkish, Spanish, Thai, Chinese dramas, Filipino movies, and so much more. The emotion and acting I get from international films, shows, and music is so much better than the American entertainment I grew up with. Why is it so hard to expose yourself to new cultures if the only obstacle is what? Reading?

That said, I totally agree with you. I grew up watching American shows, and then Japanese, and then, Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean. All with subtitles. I'm only fluent in 1 foreign language, English, but watching films and shows from other countries helped me understand other cultures and languages bit by bit. It makes me more informed about what goes on in other parts of the world, and makes me more open-minded of differences.

As someone who's from a country with a really small entertainment industry, watching most of the media I consume with subtitles has always just been really normal. I don't think that guy realizes how lucky he is to have access to such a variety of entertainment in his native language.

As an American, me, my friends, and family, all watch subtitled things. This video and media makes you think a majority are like that. Ive really never heard anyone say they wouldn't watch something bc of subtitles or another language.

저도 최근에 러시아 비행기 타고 여행다녀왔는데 기생충을 비행기에서 볼수있게되어서 신나는 마음으로 봤는데 러시아 더빙이 있어서 소름 돋아서 끄고 한국어 더빙 찾아서 봤을정도로 더빙으로 보면 진짜 맛이 안살아요.....

Not gonna lie, I used to be one of those people who hated subtitles and wouldn’t watch anything unless it was in English. But you don’t know what you’re missing out on unless you take that chance and open yourself up a bit.
Subtitles are not a barrier, they’re a bridge. Some people just need to cross it and get over it.

I've been putting subtitles on everything I watched since I was a little kid. All my favorite cartoons. Tom and Jerry, because sometimes you can't understand the dialogue of those old shows with their audio technology at the time. I just enjoyed reading. And closed captioning was specially made for deaf people so they have another accessible resource for enjoying media. Are we the only country acting entitled for not being able to read some words at the bottom of a screen?
Super agreed. I have been watching lots of foreign movies with subtitle for many years as well. But there were nothing could interrupt to understanding of significant messages within the movie.

You don’t get subtitles on songs when you listen to them and you can still understand the feelings behind it, so why is it so hard to watch a movie?

At first, I thought everyone all of the world watched things without subtitles, but once you made the point, I finally realized how closed minded Americans can br, including myself. I watch things like Hwarang and Itaewon Class with subtitles, and I love it! Anyways, you're a big role model of mine, and have been for at least a year. Thanks for making your videos!

America had a privelege, but not I feel like that privelege should go to Korea. Korea has so many amazing people, but they aren't recognized nearly as much as Kim Kardashian, for examplr.

As a child, when I cant read, I still love watch cartoon in original language, and now I can read, of course I prefer original language, because it the best for us to engage with the movie and the actors.
And through subtitle I learn alot of language, I speak bahasa, and I learn English + Korean through subtitle. One drama for 2 language learning. So effective.
American should learn other language too. Its fun.

Been into anime and watching them subbed since I was a teen, now I watch kdramas, not sure what all these ppl are so upset about. They’re so narrow minded and honestly probably xenophobic
Maybe they can't read well or are too lazy or both.
I actually prefer subs over dubs whenever I watch anime... cause usually I find English dubs to be horrible.
