Etude is an English word that comes from the French word. It does mean a short piece mainly for practice. Like the Chopin Etudes (Polish but naturalized French).
Yeah it's "étude" in French, and mutated into "study" in English. The e with the accent means there's an s missing. So, historically, it would've been written "estude" - you can see how easily it became study from there. Same goes for étudiant = student
I did learn a bit of French and the word is etudier. But in reference to composers like Chopin and Debussy, they do mean study in French which is what it kind of means in English is a practice piece. Like the black key etude which is Chopin's "study" of the black keys (the right hand only plays black keys).

I feel like it could be an overall Asian and Southeast Asian thing, but I realized that they like to shorthand a lot to the point it no longer makes any sense. I'm Vietnamese and Vietnamese shorthand, especially for texting is extremely confusing to me and normal Vietnamese is kinda hard already.
